Memory stocks, which were some of the stock market's best performers last year, have tumbled in recent weeks, pressured by concerns about an unsustainable surge in memory demand from AI workloads.

"If you look at the market in the first couple of months of the year, the market environment is definitely a little tougher than we anticipated," Chamberlain told CNBC at the company's manufacturing plant in Vance, Alabama. "I think there are lots of distractions out there, whether it's geopolitics and everything else." Car buyers are facing elevated auto loan interest rates and questions about the strength of the economy that threaten to slow shopping for a new vehicle. But even with gasoline prices now topping $4 a gallon in the U.S., Chamberlain said the automaker hasn't yet seen consumers delaying buying a new Mercedes due to gas prices. "I think in the short term, it's manageable," said Chamberlain. "But I think over [a] 90, 100 or 120-day period at closer to $5 [per gallon], it starts to become a bigger distraction." Mercedes is investing $4 billion in its Alabama plant through 2030 in a push to increase production as the automaker targets a 28% increase in U.S. car sales. Last year, Mercedes' U.S. retail sales totaled 303,200 cars, the automaker said. By 2030, it's targeting annual U.S. retail sales of 400,000 cars. The majority of the vehicles that Mercedes sells in the U.S. are built overseas, which leaves the company subject to higher costs a year into President Donald Trump's higher tariffs on auto imports. Those increased costs have cut into Mercedes margins, but Chamberlain said tariffs are not slowing sales. "Since tariffs have been launched, we've only increased our prices 1.3%, significantly less than inflation," he said Tuesday. The market is ugly in here. Sentiment and positioning are heavily bearish. However, we need to remember that sustainable market lows form before sentiment and fundamental data improve. The old saying "it's darkest before dawn " very often applies to the markets. Last week's column outlined the top three portfolio changes we made, including deploying inverse ETF hedges, cutting emerging markets and reducing holdings in gold stocks with increasing real interest rates. So yes, I'm drinking some of the bearish Kool-Aid too. But when I look at the semiconductors, I'm starting to see signs that we may be approaching peak bearishness and selling pressure nearing exhaustion. It may take one or two more negative headlines out of the Middle East to drive that final wave of selling and push markets into a true capitulation phase. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) daily chart shows a decline from the February highs, but the shape of the correction is a standard A-B-C shape shown in the orange dashed lines. That's the signature shape of a correction against the longer-term trend — up in the case. Notice that A-B-C correction dropped us into the yellow highlighted zone of a pivot of sorts around $360 to $370. Could it be a possible support zone? Finally, notice the SMH did not break below the 200-day moving average. In fact, it's well above the 200-day moving average at around $350. Next let's turn to a daily ratio chart of SMH/ S & P 500 (SPX) . This ratio chart shows the semiconductors relative to the S & P 500, and it tells a much more tempered, less bearish story of hardware and semiconductors relative to the broader market. You'll notice a sideways correction that traced a triangle consolidation, which consists of lower-highs and higher-lows to form the sideways squeeze pattern. More times than not the consolidation pattern will break in the direction of the larger-degree trend, which is again higher. georgeclerk/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images This is a follow-up Buy call on Visa ( V ) from the Buy I issued in July last year. The long-term retirement asset categorization still stays valid. Operational performance has not been a drag since my Buy call. However, the stock has failed to live up to the lower drawdown positioning I had claimed in July 2025 - and that is one of the core changes to the thesis from July. While Visa stayed flat during the bull run in the rest of the markets since July last year, it has corrected like a growth stock in the late 2025 to the current sell-off. The net effect is a ~15% drawdown in a period where the broader markets (proxied by the S&P 500) have been flat on an end-to-end basis. There are some concerns around normalized growth expectations and a potentially mix-related margin pressure regime that could explain this drawdown and should be on investors' watchlists too. However, the net effect, in my view, is that this changes the positioning from a defensive stabilizer to a high-quality compounder. And the Buy rating is retained, looking at how the valuation reset has aligned Visa closer to the expected normalized growth profile with an eye on the mix. Original Positioning and Why the Drawdown The original Buy thesis relied on Visa's defensive-like lower drawdown profile, supported by a secular and stable tollbooth-like business model. Visa's business also exhibits a low GDP linkage (inflation pass-through via payments). Tailwinds from digital payments are supportive for the long-term thesis. FCF remains strong with margins around the 55% mark, and buybacks since July alone account for close to a 1% reduction in share count (EPS accretive). If the agency proceeds, it will be a victory for HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has publicly voiced his support for the products. The FDA's list of banned peptides was last updated in 2023. One of those peptides, c esium chloride, can cause irregular heartbeat. Another, chloral hydrate, is associated with dosing errors and oversedation. Many others pose a risk for immunogenicity, a reference to triggering the body's immune response. A senior HHS official told The New York Times that many high-ranking FDA staff do not support the change. The same official said that the FDA will go after firms that make false or misleading claims about the health benefits of their products. The Times also said that a meeting of the agency's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee will likely be scheduled to discuss whether there is medical evidence for the peptides and vote on whether compounding pharmacies can resume producing them. On a February podcast with Joe Rogan, RFK Jr. said he has personally used injectable peptides for injuries with positive results. Scott Brunner, CEO of the Alliance for Pharmacy Compounding, told the Times of his concerns with the peptides individuals are currently buying online. "The patients who are getting them are almost certainly getting either unproven, illicit product from overseas or research-grade product because there's not a version of these drugs that is pharmaceutical grade from FDA-registered manufacturers and eligible for use in humans."
