Impoverishment Of Spaniards Is The Result Of Years Of Interventionist Policies Authored by Daniel Lacalle, Inflation, bloating GDP with public spending and immigration and hidden unemployment are the ingredients of the so-called “economic miracle” of the Sánchez administration. Spain closes 2025 with the consumer price index ( CPI ) rate above the euro area average and higher than all the large economies in Europe. Cumulative inflation, measured by CPI, during Sánchez’s term reached 24.8%. Housing and food have risen by almost twice as much as the headline CPI. The reality of Spain is that the loss of purchasing power and the impoverishment of Spaniards are the result of years of interventionist policies. Home purchase prices have soared by more than 38%, housing-related expenses (rent, utilities, maintenance) have risen by more than 30%, and food prices are up around 38%. The “real shopping basket” studies find increases of between 40% and 60% in basic products between 2019 and 2025, showing that inflation in essential goods has been far higher than the official average. Between 2019 and 2025, real wages in Spain have fallen by 0.3%, according to CaixaBank, but the picture is much worse if we look at net real wages, which have fallen by more than double because the government refused to index taxes to inflation and has sharply increased the fiscal burden of families and businesses. GDP growth, productivity, and the statistical mirage Government propaganda claims that productivity and GDP per capita “grow” by using the pandemic collapse as the starting point of the series. In other words, because Spain fell more than anyone else, now it “grows.” The reality is very different. Labour productivity per occupied person, compared with the EU average, has fallen from 99.8% in 2018 to 97%. Bouncing back is not growing, and even less so when the government is bloating GDP with government spending and immigration. A quarter of Spain’s net real GDP gain over 2019‑2025 is dire...

Tariffs imposed on South African agricultural products by the US are spiking the price of South African wine in the world’s biggest market, making it less competitive and reducing export volumes. The price of South African wine is about 17 percentage points more expensive in the US relative to other imports when compared with 2024 prices, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development said in its February’s global-trade update. South African wine and fruit producers are feeling the impact of US duties of as much as 30% on some agricultural goods. American tariffs crimped imports 11% in the third quarter and 39% in the final three months of the year, according to the report. Unctad highlighted the effect the tariff regime has on South Africa’s ability to compete in the US by “redistributing competitiveness in complex and uneven ways”. This “differs by sector, country and export structure”, the report said. “Countries need to monitor their relative tariff positions closely, diversify export markets where access tightens and seize openings where preferential margins improve,” Unctad said.

Sweden won’t be joining the euro in the near future even as a debate on the merits of such a move is gathering pace, according to Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson . Asked about the timeline of potentially adopting the single currency, Svantesson told reporters in Brussels that her expectation is “not the next couple of years.” While Sweden is a longstanding member of the European Union, it’s thus far resisted joining the almost three-decade-old common currency. In a non-binding Swedish referendum in 2003, some 56% of voters rejected adopting the euro and successive governments have respected that result. “It’s a new world, geopolitically and geoeconomically, and that’s why I think it’s good to see what is good for Sweden in the future to have the euro or not,” she said on Tuesday. Svantesson has said she’ll launch an inquiry into the euro if the current center-right government she represents remains in power after an election in September. She added that what “we need is a really good commission and scrutinize what has been good and bad for the Swedish economy, standing outside” the euro, highlighting that there are “many parties that want to do this quite soon.” Trump’s New World Order Is Pushing Sweden to Warm Up to the Euro Why Sweden Is Changing Its Tune on Adopting the Euro: QuickTake Sweden’s Finance Minister Proposes Inquiry Into Euro Adoption

Wartsila Oyj is seeking a foothold in the AI-fueled US data-center boom, betting that its engines that can power the server stacks will benefit from a rare opening as gas turbines are in short supply. The Finnish manufacturer of power generation gear has secured three large US gas-engine orders for data centers since last summer, totaling about 1.2 gigawatts. “Many customers would normally buy turbines, but now come to us,” Chief Executive Officer Hakan Agnevall said in an interview in Helsinki on Monday. “Gas turbine banks are sold out.” Serving data centers is nascent business for Wartsila, which it only kicked off two years ago under Agnevall. It’s part of the Energy segment, where Wartsila expects overall demand to be stronger over the next 12 months than in the prior year. The challenge is to convert early wins into durable market share in a sector long dominated by suppliers with deeper relationships and operating track records. Data center developers tend to default to turbine makers with established US ties, and engineers tend to favor familiar systems, Agnevall said. Wartsila does not yet have a US data-center engine plant in operation, with first deliveries scheduled in the coming years. Demand for computing power driven by artificial intelligence has fueled rapid growth in US data centers as they move to providing computational power for large language models from their prior mode of storing data. Electricity needs are projected to triple by 2035, according to BloombergNEF . Data centers are expected to account for nearly half of total US power-demand growth through 2030, the International Energy Agency estimates. Since it’s not possible to secure grid connections fast enough, many data center builders turn to other solutions, Agnevall said.
