It was all there apart from one tiny detail. Announcing the takeover of Schroders Plc, US insurer Nuveen was silent on Cazenove Capital, the wealth-management business that’s arguably the UK fund manager’s star asset. Cazenove is a resonant name in the City of London. Not mentioning it seemed awfully bad manners — especially when the Americans were falling over themselves to big up the Schroders brand. How Nuveen handles the Cazenove piece of its historic £10 billion ($14 billion) purchase will make a difference to the outcome. Nuveen Chief Executive Officer William Huffman talked a lot about opportunities in wealth management. The reticence toward specifically acknowledging Cazenove begs some questions. Does Nuveen not appreciate what it has acquired? Or is it taking a consciously nuanced stance ahead of a potential onward sale? Rewind to 2013 when Schroders bought Cazenove Capital for £424 million. That was several years after US bank JPMorgan Chase & Co. took full control of the sibling Cazenove stockbroking business. Schroders smartly secured a new engine of growth as it battled challenges in conventional asset management and in its own private bank . Cazenove Capital’s rich clients didn’t blink at control passing to another blue-blooded British name. Things are different this time. The risk that goes with any transaction for a fund manager — that the buyer struggles to retain the acquired customers — must surely be elevated. Passing Cazenove to a US-based mutual asset manager, especially one with little brand recognition in the UK, is a change of ownership of a very different kind. The central question is whether Cazenove’s clients baulk that control shifts from London to the US, and from a boutique to a big financial firm. Expect rivals, especially in Cazenove’s backyard, to try their hardest to snaffle business away. True, customer ties are to the individual relationship manager as much as to the firm in this industry. Nuveen has created a £175 million pot of...

Every fan expects Real to be among the best eight in Europe but they are in the playoffs for a second season in a row after a 4-2 defeat at Benfica in the final league fixture. Looking back, Carlo Ancelotti’s impact at Real is even clearer, as is the case with Zinedine Zidane, who won three successive Champions League titles with the club. Why were they suited to this club? Because they themselves once stood on the pitch alongside outstanding footballers. Ancelotti also played under Arrigo Sacchi at Milan while Zidane scored key goals in Champions League and World Cup finals. People with this aura are respected by the best. Continue reading...
