Strait Showdown: Iran Launches "Smart Control" Exercise At Oil Transit Point Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) kicked off naval drills Monday in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, according to state media. The exercise, dubbed "Smart Control of Hormuz Strait," is being carried out by IRGC naval forces under the direct supervision of the Guards' top command, state television reported, with semi-official Tasnim news agency describing the drills as testing combat readiness against "possible security and military threats." Energy markets are watching closely. IRNA: IRGC Navy conducts a hybrid, live exercise dubbed "Smart Control of the Strait of Hormuz." Under the supervision of IRGC Commander-in-Chief Major General Mohammad Pakpour, a state media press release described the exercise further as "A rapid, decisive, and comprehensive response to maritime security threats form the core focus of the intelligence and operational components of the units deployed during the exercise." Indirect nuclear talks between the US and Iran have lately resumed after collapsing when Israel launched strikes on Iran in June 2025, igniting a 12-day conflict that included US attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities - with another round of negotiations scheduled for Tuesday in Geneva , with Oman serving as mediator . The timing is no coincidence, given that late last week President Trump announced he was dispatching a second aircraft carrier to the Middle East, while continuing to warn that military action against Iran remains on the table. The IRGC has been conducing sporadic and in some cases unannounced drills in regional waters in order to demonstrate to Washington the Islamic Republic's military readiness. Two weeks ago, when some of the first drills kicked off, US Central Command (CENTCOM) warned the IRGC it better be careful in the vicinity of US naval assets. "We will not tolerate unsafe IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) actions including overfligh...

However, a $100 monthly investment in the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSEMKT: VOO) , a boring ETF pegged to the S&P 500 , could easily grow to more than $20,500 over the next decade. Here's how that math works out. Image source: Getty Images. The S&P 500 has generated an average annual return of roughly 10% since its inception in 1957. Let's assume that trend continues over the next ten years, and you contribute $100 to VOO at the end of each month. By the end of the ten years, you'd have earned roughly $8,500 in unrealized gains from your underlying investment of $12,000. By comparison, the same contributions to a savings account with a 3% yield would only have grown to $13,950. Continue reading

If it wants to triple its return with a $100 million investment in the S&P 500, it asks its partner bank to invest $300 million in the index on its behalf. Continue reading

Andrzej Rostek/iStock via Getty Images By Zain Vawda AUD:USD has been on a tear since January 19, rallying some 500-odd pips since. The move has coincided with US dollar weakness and a renewed appetite for emerging markets and commodity-linked currencies like the Australian dollar. The current rally appears to have found a top around the 0.7150 handle, before ending last week with two bearish days. This has raised the question: Is a deeper correction on its way for AUD/USD? Fundamental outlook - Central Bank policy divergence The longer-term fundamental picture still supports further Aussie dollar gains as central bank policy divergence comes into play. The RBA has raised rates at its recent meeting with the potential for more rate hikes, while the Federal Reserve continues to eye rate cuts at some point this year. However, in the short term, a pullback still may materialize, and looking at the recent price action, there do appear to be signs to support this narrative. Just looking at implied rates for the Fed and the RBA, the divergence is evident. According to LSEG data, markets are pricing in around 37 bps of rate hikes for the RBA through December 2026. RBA implied rates for 2026 (Source: LSEG) Now switching to the Federal Reserve, markets are pricing in around 66 bps of rate cuts after last week's softer-than-expected CPI print. This leaves the Aussie dollar in pole position for more gains as the year progresses. Federal Reserve implied rates for 2026 (Source: LSEG) Technical Analysis - AUD/USD From a technical point of view, the best place to start is the weekly chart. On a weekly time frame, we have seen upper wicks, which may be a sign that bullish momentum is fading. Couple that with the period-14 RSI, which is in overbought territory. Are these signs of fatigue? AUD/USD Weekly Chart, February 16, 2026 (Source: TradingView.com) Dropping down to a four-hour time frame, and support at 0.70690 is key. A break of this level, though, still faces significant hurd...
