Exclusive: Google fails to include safety warnings when users are first presented with AI-generated medical advice Google is putting people at risk of harm by downplaying safety warnings that its AI-generated medical advice may be wrong. When answering queries about sensitive topics such as health, the company says its AI Overviews, which appear above search results, prompt users to seek professional help, rather than relying solely on its summaries. “AI Overviews will inform people when it’s important to seek out expert advice or to verify the information presented,” Google has said . A Nigerian startup building autonomous security systems to protect critical infrastructure on the continent raised an additional $22 million in a new capital round that was led by venture firm Lux Capital and the chief executive officer of Lagos-based unicorn Flutterwave. Terrahaptix Inc. raised the amount weeks after an earlier $11.8 million round . Existing investors like Joe Lonsdale ’s 8VC and Nova Global were joined by Lux Capital — which recently raised $1.5 billion in its largest fund — and Resilience17 Capital founded by Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga Agboola . The round was completed in under two weeks, the company said in a statement on Monday. The new funding will be used to expand its factory in Abuja to produce 40,000 drones annually, and the company will begin the construction of a mega factory in an undisclosed location in a few weeks, CEO Nathan Nwachukwu said. Founded in 2024 by Nwachuku, 22, and Maxwell Maduka, 24, Abuja-based Terra produces long- and mid-range drones, autonomous sentry towers and unmanned ground vehicles. The equipment helps secure infrastructure assets valued at about $11 billion across Africa, including hydropower plants in Nigeria, as well as gold- and lithium-mining operations in Ghana. Last week, the company announced it was expanding its manufacturing beyond Africa for the first time, after it entered into a deal to jointly build a factory with AIC Steel in Saudi Arabia. The entire funding had “far exceeded expectations,” said Nwachukwu, who initially hoped to secure around a sixth of what had been raised so far. “The company is making a lot of strides in government and military contracts and there’s a need to massively expand our manufacturing capability.” Sign up here for the twice-weekly Next Africa newsletter, and subscribe to the Next Africa podcast on Apple , Spotify or anywhere you listen .

Rolling coverage of the latest economic and financial news, as Japan misses growth forecasts for the final three months of 2025 Good morning, and welcome to our rolling coverage of business, the financial markets and the world economy. Japan has escaped falling into recession, just, with a weak return to growth that highlights the need for punchy measures from its new government to spur the economy on. “Personal consumption showed resilience, but whether this resilience can be sustained will depend on whether price relief measures will make an impact and whether real wages will turn positive.” Continue reading...

Within small caps, Health Care was up over 18.55%, led by biotech and pharmaceutical stocks. Biotech and pharmaceuticals represent close to 7% and 2%, respectively, of the Russell 2000® Index. Unfortunately, we have no exposure in either industry. Although there was some exhaustion of the dominant Artificial Intelligence trend during the quarter, non-earners, microcaps, and low return-on-equity ("ROE") stocks continued to outperform. We have not chased the speculative rally and have been purchasing profitable, competitively advantaged businesses that have fallen out of favor and become significantly cheaper. We will continue to remain patient and purchase small-cap companies that have a sustainable competitive advantage and are trading below intrinsic value. We have also added significantly to some of our current ETF stocks that have fallen out of favor, despite no significant changes to their competitive positions. During the quarter, we were particularly active in adding to some of our long-held software and business service stocks that came under pressure. Portfolio Performance During the fourth quarter, the Harbor Active Small Cap ETF ("ETF") returned -4.29% ('NAV'), significantly underperforming the Russell 2000® Index, which returned 2.19%. The ETF's horrible stretch of relative performance since March 2025 continued through the fourth quarter. According to Jefferies, from the April 9 low through year-end, the lowest ROE quintile has beaten the highest ROE quintile by 42%. Given our bias to invest in companies that have sustainable competitive advantages and sustain...

Mizuho Financial Group Inc. ’s brokerage unit said it is under investigation by Japan’s financial watchdog, after the Nikkei newspaper reported its staff are suspected of insider trading. The employees suspected by the Securities and Exchange Surveillance Commission to be involved are from the investment banking division, the newspaper reported, without saying where it got the information. Mizuho Securities said in a statement that it’s fully cooperating with the probe and can’t comment further because the investigation is ongoing. Representatives for the SESC weren’t immediately available to comment. The revelations risk undermining confidence in Japan’s financial industry at a time when the stock market is booming. Local equities are trading near a record and investment banks are benefiting from a resurgence in underwriting and mergers and acquisitions deals.
