India’s $5.2 trillion stock market has had a soft start to the year, and it could face further pressure as new regulatory measures to moderate trading activity add to existing concerns about corporate profit growth and foreign flows. Late Friday, the country’s central bank tightened rules on bank loans to proprietary traders and stock brokers, a move that may curb leveraged trading. Earlier this month, taxes on equity derivatives were raised, unsettling markets, and the market regulator later hiked margins for a popular trading strategy. Together, these measures come just as a US trade deal had begun to lift sentiment. The market has been trying to recover from its weakest start to a year in a decade, with investors already concerned about modest earnings growth, a rout in software services stocks and relatively high valuations — factors that could weigh further on foreign investment flows. Shares of capital market-related stocks slumped on Monday in Mumbai trading. BSE Ltd., the country’s oldest bourse operator, fell as much as 9.9%, while key brokerage Angel One Ltd.’s shares tumbled 9.5%. Commodity bourse operator MCX’s shares slipped 7.4%. The stock benchmark NSE Nifty 50 was little changed in early trading, in line with a gauge of Asian stocks. Global funds and domestic individual investors have together withdrawn about $2 billion from local shares so far this year. Meanwhile, overseas investors began the week holding more short than long positions in Indian index futures, extending their net bearish stance for a 17th consecutive month.

Over the last year, for instance, two of my three portfolios are performing exceptionally well. My largest one is up 55.3%. My smallest is up 20%. Am I a medium-sized one, which is focused on padding me in the event that I am correct about the economy entering into a recession, is up 3.72%. All combined, we are looking at a return of about 25.8% in the last 12 months. By comparison, the S&P 500 is up only 14.8%. The NASDAQ is up about 17.9%. Unfortunately, not all of my calls are always right, though. One prospect that has so far disagreed with me is Sonic Automotive ( SAH ), a rather interesting player in the automotive retail space. Since I called the company a ‘buy’ back in August of last year, the stock has dropped 13.6%. This is at a time when the S&P 500 is up 9.3%. This drop in share price has been in spite of the fact that revenue has increased nicely. And honestly, it seems to be largely because of mixed financial performance on the bottom line. Certain profitability metrics are doing well, while others could be better. I do suspect that, based on broader economic concerns, the picture for the business will worsen in the near term. But because of how cheap the stock is, I remain optimistic enough about it to maintain it as a ‘buy’ candidate. Soon, we will get some idea as to whether I was right or not. I say this because, on February 18th, before the market opens, the management team at the company will be announcing financial results covering the final quarter of the 2025 fiscal year. The good news is that revenue is expected to rise. But the bad news is that profitability is forecasted to fall slightly. While this would be disappointing to see, unless the drop in profits is significantly greater than what analysts anticipate, I don't see myself changing my assessment of the company at that time. Shares remain compelling despite challenges Before w...

Central banks around the world adopted divergent approaches to interest rates: the Federal Reserve delivered rate cuts in both October and December, signaling a pivot toward supporting a softening labor market. Meanwhile, the European Central Bank ('ECB') held its benchmark interest rate steady, and the Bank of Japan raised rates to 0.75%, marking a 30-year high. The "AI trade" encountered headwinds as investors questioned return on massive capital expenditures and the circular financing arrangements enabling them. After years of U.S. equity outperformance, international markets led the way in both the fourth quarter and for the full year 2025. The Russell 3000 Index gained 2% for the quarter and 17% for the year, trailing the MSCI EAFE and MSCI Emerging Markets Indexes, which posted 5% quarterly returns and surged 31% and 34%, respectively, for the full year. For the quarter: Value indexes outpaced growth in the developed world while Emerging Markets remained a growth-led story. Among global risk factors, Beta, Momentum, and Earnings Yield enjoyed positive performance, while Residual Volatility, Profitability, and Liquidity were punished. As our investment team meets with companies, dissects recent earnings reports, and reviews the global landscape, they note several investment dynamics in various market segments that guide our positioning: United States: Low Quality Bias and Early-Cycle Rotation Stimulus and Early-Cycle Rotation: U.S. economic activity remained resilient in Q4, with GDP growth exceeding expectations even as the labor market softened—reinforcing the Fed’s decision to cut rates in October and December. While earnings were generally healthy, PMIs stayed stagnant. With additional rate cuts and early-2026 fiscal stimulus on the horizon, we are seeing clear signs of an early-cycle rotation. Low quality bias: Th...
