CalypsoArt/iStock via Getty Images Co-authored with Beyond Saving As investors who focus on the high-yield space, we often find ourselves investing in companies that distribute a large portion of their earnings. The company makes money and then distributes most, if not all of it, to shareholders. When looking at many investments that are structured as a C-corp, they grow by retaining earnings. Even if they pay a dividend, they might pay out 30-50% of cash flow and use the rest to fund investments in new business. Companies will balance their desire for growth with their desire to pay a dividend, and sometimes the dividend gets the axe. It is one reason why so many investors freak out if the dividend yield gets high or if the payout ratio exceeds 50%. For many companies, these would in fact be warning signs that a dividend cut is coming. So, when companies like Whirlpool ( WHR ) or The Wendy's Company ( WEN ) start yielding around 7%, investors start asking us if we're buying them. After all, we target high-yield investments. Yet, there is a fundamental difference in structure between these C-Corps and investments like BDCs, REITs, or CEFs. The latter alphabet soup all fall into the category known as RICs (Regulated Investment Companies). C-corporations are designed to grow. They pay taxes on their excess earnings and are incentivized to retain capital to fund growth. So, when the dividend becomes a material portion of their cash flow, they usually cut. RICs don't pay taxes on most of their taxable income, on the condition that they distribute it to shareholders. As a result, RICs are incentivized by the tax code to distribute most of their earnings—which naturally attracts an investor base made up of people like us: those who want to collect high yields. This, in turn, incentivizes paying out a dividend that is sometimes larger than strictly required by the tax code. When evaluating the yield or payout ratio, it has to be done in the context of how the company is st...

One of the things that Vanguard has focused on for decades is shareholder-friendly policies that keep management fees to a minimum. The company recently followed through on that pledge again by announcing a fee reduction on 53 of its mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), including some of the industry's most popular names. Given that the expense ratios on many Vanguard ETFs are already in the single digits, the changes in many cases will feel small. But Vanguard has done mass fee reductions like this multiple times in the past. This will likely not be the last time you see this. Continue reading

In this article GLD IBIT BTC.CM= Follow your favorite stocks CREATE FREE ACCOUNT watch now VIDEO 14:15 14:15 How crypto's recent volatility impacts ETF investors, according to Bitwise CIO and GraniteShares CEO ETF Edge Bitcoin's massive slump from a record price above $126,000 last October has darkened sentiment across the crypto landscape. Faith has been shaken in a trade that was viewed as a digital rival to gold as a store of value, and by some others as a risk-on asset that would continue to boom alongside a crypto-friendly Trump administration. Since the all-time high price last October, bitcoin has lost almost half its value and its inability to bounce back in trading is increasing fears about another "crypto winter" — a prolonged slump similar to the time of the FTX crash in 2022 when bitcoin fell from near $50,000 to as low as $15,000. In the past month alone, bitcoin is down over 25%. But crypto investing experts on the latest CNBC "ETF Edge" say a look at the recent flows into and out of bitcoin and crypto exchange-trade funds suggests that long-term investors are not abandoning the asset class. Money has certainly moved out, but they say not to a level that suggests long-term investor panic. Over the past three months, the iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) has seen approximately $2.8 billion in net outflows. That is substantial, but over the past year, the BlackRock ETF has attracted near $21 billion in net inflows, according to VettaFi. The broader spot bitcoin ETF category shows a similar pattern. Over the past three months, the ETF asset class has experienced roughly $5.8 billion in net outflows. Over the past year, across all spot bitcoin ETFs, net inflows remain positive by $14.2 billion. Money is exiting, but the majority of assets have remained in place, and some ETF experts say the money being pulled isn't from the long-term investor or financial advisor that have begun allocating to the asset class. "It's not the ETF investors who are driving the sell...

I am furious that women and children have to endure a crisis like this for progress to become politically possible. But I will seize this moment Jess Phillips MP is parliamentary under-secretary of state for safeguarding and violence against women and girls Jess Phillips calls for Epstein files to be catalyst for long-term legislative change It always takes a calamity – a dreadful murder that reaches every front page, a mass paedophile ring being uncovered, or a political scandal unfolding – to make institutions sit up and act on violence against women and children. These windows of potential energy are never wasted by women’s rights activists. Historically, they have used them to build the #MeToo movement, to fight for legislation change and to push for greater resources for victims. I’ve done it, many times – “never waste a crisis” is my mantra. In the past few weeks, while the nation’s attention has been on the political fallout from the Epstein files , I have seen the opportunity to push for more, for better. To move beyond the throwaway line about the victims being the most important thing – and to actually make them just that. Deeds not words are what matter. If repentance and sorrow is all we achieve out of the courage of the Epstein victims, we will have failed; change is all that will suffice. Jess Phillips is MP for Birmingham Yardley and parliamentary under-secretary of state for safeguarding and violence against women and girls Do you have an opinion on the issues raised in this article? Elation as anti-extremists fight back against influence of billionaire megadonors through grassroots organizing Chris Tackett started tracking extremism in Texas politics about a decade ago, whenever his schedule as a Little League coach and school board member would allow. At the time, he lived in Granbury, 40 minutes west of Fort Worth. He’d noticed that a local member of the state legislature, Mike Lang, had become a vocal advocate for using public money for private schools – despite the fact that Lang campaigned as a supporter of public education. With a little research, Tackett found that Lang had received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign donations from the Wilks brothers and Tim Dunn, billionaire megadonors whose deep pockets and Christian nationalist views have consumed the Texas GOP . Tackett published his findings on social media, and soon enough, people started asking him to create pie charts of their representatives’ campaign funds. These charts evolved into the organisation See It. Name It. Fight It . Continue reading...

Real estate agent brothers Tal, Oren and Alon Alexander – known as ‘closers’ – are on trial in New York for sex trafficking In their time as real estate brokers, the Israeli-American Alexander brothers – twins Alon and Oren and older brother Tal – were known as “closers”, the salesmen who could a get a sale over finish line, often to wealthy hedge funders who were then making hay in aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis. Their technique, one real estate expert explained outside the 26th floor of the federal court house in lower Manhattan last week, was based on the sense that the property salesman “were just like their clients” – young, eager and successful. Kim Kardashian and then-husband Kanye West, Jared and Ivanka Trump were clients. Continue reading...
