The gap in my repertoire was explained later when I opened David Thompson ’s pink bible of Thai Food and learned that “a mussaman curry is the most complex, time-consuming Thai curry to make”. The fact the esteemed Australian chef also describes it as “the most delicious” is scant comfort given I’ve just promised my editor I’ll make at least six of the things … but then I remember how incredibly tasty it is, and knuckle down to my research. Though the first recipe dates from 1899, massaman, whose name suggests an association with the country’s Muslim minority, probably dates back to the 17th century, and reflects either Persian or Malaysian influence, or perhaps that of the Indian and Middle Eastern spice traders who travelled through southern Thailand on their way to China. Believe it or not, adding CarPlay was seen as a key piece in making that happen. The iPhone-like interface is a must-have item for many buyers, and Tesla could finally give them what they wanted. Just as consumers are glued to their iPhones, they are equally attached to CarPlay — and prefer it over the complex, often clunky infotainment systems that automakers have developed. On this front, though, Tesla was in a better position than rivals. These are companies that operate as the backbone of economic activity within the United States. If you didn't have these different utilities, we wouldn't have the power to manufacture the goods that we enjoy every day. If these utilities didn't exist, there wouldn't be water pouring out of your faucet or natural gas to run your furnace and keep you warm at night. When utilities stop functioning as expected, pandemonium breaks out. Could you imagine if you woke up tomorrow and there was no more power, no more natural gas flowing through the pipes, and no more water coming out of the faucet? Could you imagine if this were the reality you could expect to go on perpetually unless you found a source of water, natural gas, and generated your own power? For the vast majority of Americans, they have no idea or the wherewithal to replace the utilities they desperately rely on every single day. For 2025, Technology ( XLK ) stocks carried the S&P ( SP500 ) to another double-digit year, up more than 16%. However, AI has also caused disruption, notably in the trucking & logistics industry. Old Dominion Freight Line ( ODFL ) saw shares fall due to threats from Algorhythm Holdings ( RIME ). The little-known AI company is said to enable teams to improve freight volumes without the headcount. Expected to significantly increase loads per year, this spooked investors and led to a sell-off among trucking companies like ODFL. In my opinion, this is a nothing burger, and I think the stock is a quality holding to consider inside a diversified portfolio. But growth appears fully priced in as the stock trades near 40x earnings. In this article, I discuss Old Dominion Freight Line's latest earnings fundamentals and why their valuation and economic uncertainty keep me cautious. Previous Thesis I last covered ODFL in an article back in June of 2025 titled: Valuation More Attractive, But Additional Downside Could Be Near . Higher for longer interest rates, rising costs, and lower volumes presented near-term headwinds. Although the stock has experienced a pullback, their valuation remained elevated with a forward P/E above 30x. As a result, I suggested investors wait for another 10% - 20% drop before adding. Tariffs and further economic weakening were also risks. But their dividend, well-covered by cash flows, and strong fundamentals made ODFL an ideal long-term holding. Since the stock is up close to 24% in comparison to the S&P, it is up close to 15%. At that time I was bullish because the stock traded for just about $67 per share, and I felt the shares were "on sale." Since that article was published, this stock has provided total returns of about 39%, greatly outperforming the S&P 500 Index ( SPY )'s total returns of around 8%. A lot has happened since my last article, and the company just reported Q4 results, so let's take an updated look at this stock: stanleyblackanddecker.com Q4 Earnings Results On February 4th, Stanley Black & Decker released what I viewed as being solid Q4 results , especially considering all the headwinds. Tariffs and some weakness in the lower end consumer are some of the challenges that impacted Q4 and will continue to be issues that management needs to grapple with going forward. The company reported non-GAAP earnings of $1.41 per share, which beat estimates by $0.13. Revenues came in at $3.7 billion, missing estimates by about $80 million. For 2026 guidance, the company expects earnings to range from $4.90 to $5.62 per share on an adjusted basis. The company said that debt reduction remains a top priority, and I believe these better-than-expected earnings results show that the company's cost reduction efforts are achieving results. As shown below, this company reported growth when it comes to gross margins and net income as well as delivering strong free cash flow. Gross margins of 33.2% were up 240 basis points, and this was possible due to a combination of price increases, supply chain cost reductions, and tariff mitigation efforts. The company generated $956 million in operating cash flow and $883 million in free cash flow. This is more than enough to support the roughly $500 million the company pays out annually in dividends.
