Richard Drury/DigitalVision via Getty Images Hercules Capital ( HTGC ) slightly missed estimates for net investment income by $0.01/share last week despite strong demand for new loan originations in a falling-rate world. The investment firm also maintained very robust balance sheet quality, as measured by the non-accrual ratio, and managed to fully support its dividend with net investment income. Shares crashed last week, however, due to concerns about falling interest rates and analyst downgrades that hit investor sentiment. Hercules Capital announced a new set of quarterly supplemental dividend payments before the Q4 report, as expected, that will boost investors’ total returns in 2026. While HTGC is still expensive in terms of net asset value premium compared against other BDCs, I believe that Hercules Capital offers a unique blend of tech orientation, excess coverage, and dividend safety. Data by YCharts Previous Rating I rated shares of Hercules Capital a buy in November -- 1.23x Coverage, Outperforming Tech Peers, Solid Yield -- as I believed the investment firm had the strongest coverage trend when compared against direct rivals such as Trinity Capital ( TRIN ) and TriplePoint Venture Growth ( TPVG ). I continue to see HTGC as a top choice for dividend investors in the BDC segment, especially those that don't want to be concerned about dividend payment consistency. The announcement of supplemental dividends also makes the dividend, both the regular and the supplemental dividends, very safe, in my opinion. I see the sell-off as completely undeserved and upgrade shares to strong buy for three specific reasons. 1) HTGC Is Seeing Record Originations Hercules Capital is a leading business development company in the market for financing solutions (both debt and equity). The investment firm is seeing rapid portfolio growth (+20% Y/Y), which was made possible by a steady stream of new first lien originations. Hercules Capital benefits from a strong backdrop in origin...

The early September headline accompanying our 2025 NFL predictions – Will it be Mahomes, Jackson or Allen in the Super Bowl? – was the ultimate hedge. After all, what were the odds that one of them wouldn’t emerge from the AFC? Then there was the reality. Mike Vrabel’s dramatic turnaround of New England. The Bears transforming from worst-to-first in the NFC North under Ben Johnson. The first-half magic of Daniel Jones. The successful pairing of Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Sam Darnold . Continue reading...

Seven-month-old Briana slept on her lap, her breathing soft and uneven. On the other side of the screen was Mohan Karki, Basnet’s husband, who had yet to hold his daughter. For Karki, nearly 9,000 miles (14,500km) away, it was already morning. He was in hiding in south Asia, his exact location withheld for his safety, his face breaking into pixels as he watched his daughter sleep. Continue reading...

Sandwish/iStock via Getty Images Impinj ( PI ), a provider of RFID hardware and software solutions, was already heading down prior to the release of its latest earnings report on February 5, which is why it could have used a good Q4 FY2025 report to stop the bleeding. Yet all PI got was a 24.6% drop in the stock the day after the report’s release. However, the latest decline also means the price to get in on PI has dropped significantly, which some may find enticing with the stock bouncing off of the lows post-earnings, although there is an argument to be made that the possibility PI could still go lower should not be discounted. PI is not for the faint of heart, as it is a very volatile stock A previous article from October 2024 written by myself mentioned how PI had loads of potential in terms of growth, something reaffirmed by quarterly results released shortly before. On the other hand, the article noted that it was very expensive to get in on all that potential because of the huge rally in the stock in the preceding months that caused PI to quadruple in market cap. Accordingly, I was neither short nor long, but instead opted to rate PI a hold in the article. Source: Thinkorswim app The chart above of the past two years shows why the article was not wrong to not be tempted by the momentum and the huge rally in the stock because the stock is now worth close to half of what it went for back then. PI actually proceeded to fall in the months following the high in October 2024, which resulted in PI losing almost three quarters of its stock value by the time the stock hit bottom in April 2025. Yet there was a lot of volatility either way. PI proceeded to recoup all its losses with another rally that took it back to where it was in October 2024, but by the time it ended in October 2025, PI went on another decline that has continued to the present. Interestingly, the two most recent peaks occurred in October 2024 and October 2025, or exactly one year apart, with both to...
One inevitability of tax-deferred retirement accounts is that you can't defer the tax payments forever. Retirees must begin Required Minimum Distributions ( RMDs ) once they reach age 73. Here are three strategic ways for retirees to use their RMDs. Imag...
