Welcome to our guide to the commodities driving the global economy. Today, reporter Priscila Azevedo Rocha looks at Europe’s depleted gas stockpiles. When energy traders arrived in Essen, Germany this week for the annual E-world trade fair and conference, many were sounding the alarm over the continent’s depleted natural gas inventories. There was an element of déjà vu — similar concerns dominated the event a year go — but the situation has worsened. With six weeks to go until the end of the heating season, Europe’s storage tanks are set to emerge from this winter even more depleted than in 2025. Natural gas inventories play a vital role during winter, meeting about a third of demand. When consumption surges during a cold snap, fuel stored in tanks supplements the regular daily flow from pipelines and liquefied natural gas terminals. It’s normal for storage to decline in winter and be refilled in summer. Yet there’s little financial incentive right now for buyers to purchase fuel to inject into storage sites during the warmer months. Summer gas prices are still slightly higher than those for next winter, setting the stage for another challenging injection season. “It is clear that the storages that are quite low are out of the money,” Helle Ostergaard Kristiansen, senior vice president for gas and power at Equinor ASA, said in an interview. Discussions across the conference halls centered around the need for state intervention, with some traders even advocating for gas tanks to be treated as a matter of national security . In Germany, home of the region’s biggest storage sites where inventories are now only a quarter full, a debate about the government’s role is under way . But there’s a fear that these discussions might be too little, too late because any legislation required to foster changes would take months to pass. There’s a risk that more storage sites could close if no state support comes in time. Germany’s Uniper SE has already submitted a request to the re...

Schroders Plc dates back 222 years and is one of the oldest names in the City of London, with its genesis in financing infrastructure. Nuveen, its new American owner, is only about half as old but no less storied. Founded in Chicago by John Nuveen in 1898, almost a century after Schroders, the American firm got its start underwriting municipal bonds. Its first was for a $7,000 water system in Minnesota. Over the decades, it built a reputation as active fund manager, giving rise to star muni bond pickers such as John Miller and famed stock investor David Iben . Nuveen Weighs Sale of Stake in $78 Billion Private-Capital Arm (2025) Nuveen’s Miller, a Titan of Muni Junk Bonds, to Leave Firm (2023) TIAA-CREF to Buy Nuveen Investments in $6.25 Billion Deal (2014) Vinik Hedge Fund Recruits Top-Ranked David Iben From Nuveen (2012) On Thursday, Nuveen agreed to buy Schroders in a £9.9 billion ($13.5 billion) deal that will propel it into the ranks of the world’s largest active money managers, with $2.5 trillion of assets. In recognition of the UK firm’s “deep-rooted history,” the Schroders brand will be retained and London will serve as the combined group’s non-US headquarters and largest office, Nuveen said. “In Nuveen we see a partner that shares our values, respects the culture we have built and will create exciting opportunities for our clients and people,” Schroders Chief Executive Officer Richard Oldfield said in a statement on Thursday. He will continue in the role and join Nuveen’s executive management team. The deal is the biggest so far for Nuveen, which is run by William Huffman and has been growing its footprint since it was bought by the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association of America more than a decade ago. At the time, Nuveen was known for managing closed-end funds and municipal debt, but it has since expanded further into real estate, equities and private capital. The Schroders acquisition follows smaller real estate and infrastructure deals, according ...

Glencore Plc ’s ferrochrome smelting venture in South Africa is running out of time to find a solution that would lower electricity costs and enable it to avert job cuts. The business with Merafe Resources Ltd. that processes chrome ore into ferrochrome extended a consultation process around the potential losses in December to the end of this month. About 1,500 direct jobs are at stake if no solution is reached to provide cheaper power, Japie Fullard , chief executive officer of Glencore Alloys, said in an interview. South Africa’s Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has been searching for a solution to rising electricity costs. The local ferrochrome industry highlighted the problem with competition in China taking a growing share of its business, in part due to the benefit of cheap power. Following talks with the government and state-owned utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd. , the National Energy Regulator of South Africa approved a 35% year-long reduction in power prices for ferrochrome smelters operated by Glencore-Merafe Chrome and Samancor Chrome Ltd . That’s allowed the startup of the venture’s Lion smelter in Limpopo province, which is able to roughly break even at the 87 rand cents ($0.05) per kilowatt hour level, according to Fullard. “We’re actually commissioning the first two furnaces this week.” The Glencore venture’s Boshoek and Wonderkop smelters that were shuttered in December need an even lower price sought by the broader industry of 62 cents, he said, adding that a stronger rand has added further strain. Samancor faced cuts of nearly 2,500 workers, labor union Solidarity said in November. The business, government, Eskom and labor have worked together in the search for a solution to bring the electricity cost down, according to Fullard. Still, it takes capital to restart operations that companies need to justify. “Whatever solution is being put on the table mustn’t be fluff,” he said. “It must be hard, concrete action.”

STORY: Japan's SoftBank announced a fourth consecutive quarterly profit on Thursday (February 12). It hit $1.62 billion for October to December - way ahead of a $2 billion net loss a year before. The firm was helped by the rising valuation of its OpenAI investment. Masayoshi Son's conglomerate has now invested more than $30 billion in ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, and built a shareholding of around 11%. Softbank has bet it will emerge as a winner in the battle between competing developers of large language models. OpenAI reportedly wants another capital injection of $100 billion. With SoftBank seen as a possible investor, as well as Amazon and Nvidia. SoftBank said it projects a total gain on its OpenAI investment of $19.8 billion at December-end. The firm has turned to asset sales, bond issuance and loans backed by its other holdings to finance its bets. SoftBank has already exited its position in Nvidia, and sold part of its stake in T-Mobile for $12.7 billion last year. OpenAI was once seen as the dominant player among makers of large language models. But it faces rising costs to train and run its AI models while it sees growing competition from the likes of Google-owner Alphabet.

DKosig Aurora Innovation ( AUR ) announced that its latest software release will triple its commercial driverless trucking network to 10 routes and enable expansion across the U.S. Sun Belt beginning in 2026. Notably, the upgraded Aurora Driver can now support longer-haul lanes, including a roughly 1,000-mile driverless route between Fort Worth and Phoenix that extends beyond current federal hours-of-service limits for human drivers, allowing significantly shorter transit times and higher asset utilization for carriers. With the addition of Phoenix, Aurora ( AUR ) said its driverless network now covers lanes including Dallas–Houston, Fort Worth–El Paso, El Paso–Phoenix, Fort Worth–Phoenix, and Dallas–Laredo. Aurora is also rolling out "direct-to-customer" lanes by using its Verifiable AI mapping system to automate map creation after a single manual drive, sharply reducing the time and human effort needed to open new routes and customer endpoints. The company has begun supervised autonomous deliveries to multiple customer facilities, including Hirschbach Motor Lines hauling for Driscoll’s between Dallas and Laredo, Detmar Logistics serving Capital Sand’s mining site in Monahans, Texas, and a leading U.S. carrier from its Phoenix facility. The new software enables driverless operation on highways and surface streets in adverse conditions such as rain, fog, and high winds, which previously constrained operations in Texas about 40% of the time, and is expected to materially increase uptime across the Sun Belt. Following the company's fourth-quarter earnings report, Needham reiterated its Buy rating on Aurora Innovation ( AUR ) and has it listed as a conviction list stock. "The story remains longer dated, but we see '26 as a pivotal execution year, resetting investor sentiment as milestones are achieved and confidence in AUR's longer-term model grows," updated analyst Chris Pierce. The firm has a price target of $13 on Aurora ( AUR ). Shares of AUR moved 0.5% higher in t...

Telus Corp. appointed former bank chief Victor Dodig to replace longtime Chief Executive Officer Darren Entwistle , a surprise move for a telecommunications company that’s under pressure from investors over its slow growth. Dodig, who has been an independent director on the company’s board since 2022 and retired as CEO of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce last year, will take the helm on July 1, according to a company statement . His appointment marks the end of Entwistle’s unusually long 26-year tenure at the helm of Telus. It’s the second time the Vancouver-based wireless firm has tried succession. The first was more than a decade ago, when it named Joe Natale as CEO, with Entwistle remaining as executive chair. But Natale stayed just a year and Entwistle moved back into the CEO role in 2015. Dodig is taking the helm at a pivotal time for Telus, which saw its shares drop sharply in the second half of last year amid concerns about growth in its core wireless business and its investment strategy. In December, Telus caved to investor pressure to cut its debt pile by putting future dividend increases on hold. The company has also been selling assets to reduce its leverage. Last year, it sold a 49.9% stake in its wireless towers to Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec to raise C$1.26 billion ($929 million). Telus separately reported fourth-quarter results on Thursday, posting adjusted earnings of 20 Canadian cents a share, slightly below estimates.

hapabapa/iStock Editorial via Getty Images One company that I’ve had on my radar for a while is Lucid Group ( LCID ), the luxury EV manufacturer and competitor to leading brands like Tesla ( TSLA ) and Rivian ( RIVN ). While the company lacks the scale or name-brand recognition of these competitors, I believe that the business has a credible path to structural profitability and long-term returns. What’s the catch? In short, the stock has been smoked since coming public in 2021. Shares are down 90% from the SPAC price and more than 98% from all-time highs, performance that reflects broad market skepticism in the company’s high burn rate, and share sales that have inflated the diluted share count by more than 150%: TradingView So far, Lucid has not been a good investment. However, as the company’s upfront investments begin to pay off, deliveries and revenue continue to surge, and new partnerships are announced, it seems as though the firm is starting to stand on solid ground. To be clear, I don’t expect that Lucid is anywhere close to turning the corner on profitability. That would require considerable future investments in scale and significantly higher volumes. However, it seems as though the company has turned a corner, positioning itself so that it may be able to turn the corner at some point in the future. So, if the company won’t be turning a profit anytime soon, then why am I writing about the stock now? In short, high volatility in shares has made selling options on LCID appear highly attractive. By selling far out-of-the-money put options, investors can generate an annualized yield of ~25% while taking very little risk. With this trade, ideally, investors would not be assigned shares of LCID. That said, if the stock does drop by half (or more) over the next 93 days, then getting in at a valuation closer to industry peers could make sense, especially given the strong top-line growth rate. Today, I’ll dive deep into LCID, touch on the valuation, and explain why...
