The last 10 ratings have seen only 2 buys, 4 holds, and 4 sells (one of which was a "S trong Sell" rating). In the meantime, the stock is up around 15%, beating the S&P 500. This can be particularly painful for me because I used to be a Deere shareholder, and I sold the stock at a nice gain at around $450 . But, as of now, there is almost $150 per share left on the table. Now, I have often said that I am structurally bullish on agriculture and agricultural equipment. There are several tailwinds that stand out clearly: world population increases while living standards (and eating habits) improve, while labor and land scarcity require autonomous and precision-ag solutions. Moreover, Deere has been repeatedly reporting declining numbers. While this triggered an initial sell-off and caused the stock to trade sideways from 2021 to late 2024, it seems that recently, investors have been welcoming every bad report as a sign that the worst is behind the company and that a rebound is soon due. This has caused the stock's valuation to increase and expand up to the point that Deere now trades at a fwd PE of 35, a fwd PEG ratio of 2.5, a fwd EV/EBITDA ratio of 31.5, and a fwd P/FCF just shy of 30. I don't want to mix apples with oranges, but Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet trade at lower multiples. True, Deere is highly cyclical, so when its earnings compress but investors start positioning themselves for a rebound, the valuation multiples expand and then compress quite abruptly once the rebound starts.
