primeimages/E+ via Getty Images Executive Summary During the quarter, the Lazard Emerging Markets Equity Advantage Portfolio ( LEAIX ) outperformed its benchmark, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index (net of fees), contributing to the excess return for the year. Sector allocation and stock selection both benefitted the Portfolio, while operating cash detracted. The underweight to consumer discretionary and consumer staples proved beneficial to the Portfolio. An overweight to healthcare detracted. Stock selection was strongest in the financials and healthcare sectors. Holdings in consumer discretionary and communication services stocks detracted. On a country basis, selection was most effective in China and India. Holdings in Brazil and South Africa lagged the benchmark. Market Review Emerging equity markets, as measured by the MSCI Emerging Markets Index with net dividends reinvested in USD, finished the year with a quarterly gain of 4.7%, pushing the annual gain to 33.6%, its best year since 2017. The US dollar weakened again and was a significant contributor to the year’s gain. Asian markets, comprising over 80% of the benchmark, delivered a solid quarter with the notable exception of China. Korea rose 27% in a highly volatile quarter and finished the year with an astonishing 99% gain. Retail investors continued to drive the market’s performance as government reforms have restored confidence in the equity market and individual equity ownership has tripled in the past year. Taiwan also rallied sharply as AI demand raised the country’s estimated GDP growth to 7.4%, the highest in 15 years. India matched the region’s return as the country’s growth remains among the highest in the world. The rupee declined on the back of rate cuts by the Reserve Bank of India. Escalating tensions with the US over the sale of oil to Russia caused the market to dip at quarter end. China fell more than 7% in the quarter, relinquishing all of its gains in 2025. Economic news continued to disap...
My Tesla prediction still looks likely to come true...just not as soon as I thought. Back in December, I crunched some numbers and predicted that Elon Musk would be forced to admit that his flagship company, Tesla (TSLA +1.98%), was already unprofitable in fourth-quarter 2025. The evidence seemed compelling, and the math looked bleak. As everyone now knows, of course, I was dead wrong. True, Tesla...
True, Tesla did post its first-ever year-over-year revenue decline, and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) net income was down 61%, but even an $840 million profit is still a profit. That's because of a couple of key surprises Musk had up his sleeve. Here's how Tesla beat my prediction...for now. Tesla's sales held (mostly) steady Unlike many automakers, Tesla doesn't release monthly vehicle sales numbers, so I didn't have any Tesla Q4 sales numbers to go on when I made my prediction in December. But other automakers, like Ford and Honda, had released monthly figures from October and November -- after the U.S. electric vehicle tax credits expired -- and they were dreadful, with sales down as much as 88.6%. Based on these numbers, I predicted Tesla would see a comparatively modest 50% year-over-year (YOY) drop in sales to $9.9 billion. I estimated its other business units would bring in $8 billion, for a total of $17.9 billion in quarterly revenue. But Tesla's vehicle deliveries dropped by only 15.6% YOY in Q4 to 418,227. That's not only industry-leading, it's amazing! Even more astonishing, Tesla's Q4 automotive revenue fell by only 11% YOY to $17.7 billion. In percentage terms, that's the lowest drop of any U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker by far. With revenue from the other business units, Tesla's total Q4 revenue was $24.9 billion, down a mere 3% from Q4 2024. I'm still not sure how Musk pulled this off. On the earnings call, the company cited "an increase in demand leading to record deliveries in smaller countries like Malaysia, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Taiwa...

Feb 11 (Reuters) - Amazon's pharmacy business will expand its same-day delivery prescription service to about 4,500 cities and towns in the U.S. by the end of this year, adding nearly 2,000 new communities to the network. The expansion covers states including Idaho and Massachusetts, the company said on Wednesday. Amazon launched pharmaceutical delivery in 2018 through its acquisition of PillPack. In October, it partnered with WeightWatchers to deliver medications including injectable GLP-1 obesity treatments for the weight-loss management firm's members. It also began filling some prescriptions for common medications in December at electronic kiosks in its One Medical primary care locations. One Medical, a national primary care provider Amazon acquired in 2023, allows patients to access primary and urgent care for an annual subscription fee of $199. STORY: From jittery Amazon investors to yet more co-founders quitting xAI, this is AI Weekly. :: AI Weekly Amazon investors were jittery about a so-called 'AI bubble'. Shares plunged as much as 11% after it projected a surge of more than 50% in capital expenditures. The e-commerce giant plans to pump $200 billion into its AI efforts this year. But that has some market watchers worried about returns on the investment. Sources have told Reuters ByteDance is developing an AI chip. And they said the Chinese firm is in talks with Samsung to make it. The TikTok parent wants to secure a supply of advanced processors. One source said Bytedance plans to produce at least 100,000 units of the chip this year, and it will be designed for AI inference tasks. xAI co-founders Tony Wu and Jimmy Ba have resigned. They didn't say why they're leaving, but it leaves Elon Musk's firm with just half of its 12 co-founders. Wu and Ba started the company with the billionaire Tesla and SpaceX CEO less than three years ago. The Financial Times reported Ba resigned due to tensions within its technical team over demands to improve its AI model performance. A Silicon Valley giant once again found itself in hot water with the European Union. EU regulators threatened Meta with temporary restrictions to stop it blocking AI rivals from its WhatsApp messaging service. It would come while they investigate suspected abuse of a dominant position by the U.S. tech giant. Meta said there was no reason for the EU to intervene. And robotics company RobCo has raised $100 million from major backers like Volkswagen and Exor. The German firm is working to advance so-called "physical AI" technology and wants to expand in the U.S. Roman Hoelzl is the company's co-founder and CEO. “Yeah, physical AI, to us at RobCo, is the application of AI in the physical world... that means in the manufacturing environment, in the industry, in production environments." RobCo specializes in modular systems aimed at industrial autom...

Professor25 Traders could be in for a shock when the January jobs figures are released Wednesday morning, with nonfarm payrolls showing no growth for the month due to technical reasons. The consensus is for payrolls to have risen a little less than 70K, but Bloomberg's economic team expects headline payrolls to be 0 for January (vs. +50K prior). But they caution that the seasonal adjustment factor is unusually uncertain this time because the BLS is re-estimating it alongside annual benchmark revisions and updates to the birth-death model — meaning the seasonals could materially swing the reported headline number. For 2025, Citi economist Andrew Hollenhurst expects the benchmark revision to lower employment by ~700K. That would result in a net loss of jobs last year, as the BLS previously reported payroll employment rose by 584K in 2025. Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RMS US, estimates a similar revision of -720K. Bloomberg is also expecting a soft January CPI (out Friday) and is pricing in 100 bps of rate cuts this year. Fed funds futures are pricing in 50 bps, with about a 50/50 chance of a third quarter-point cut. More on United States 10-Year Bond Yield Rout In The U.S. Dollar: A Warning For Non-Farm Payrolls? Indonesian leader Prabowo Subianto is expected to sign a much-awaited US tariff agreement when he flies to Washington next week to attend President Donald Trump ’s inaugural meeting of the Board of Peace. The agreement on reciprocal trade would be signed “around that date” of the first board meeting on Feb. 19, Coordinating Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto told reporters in Jakarta on Wednesday. US-Indonesia Trade Deal Will Be ‘Next Big One,’ Greer Says The signing will be a major step for trade relations between Indonesia and the US after months of negotiations. Hartarto, the nation’s chief negotiator, said in December that the substance of the draft agreement remained consistent with the framework leaders set in July. The US pledged to lower tariffs to 19% from 32%, while Indonesia said it would eliminate levies on more than 99% of US goods and remove non-tariff barriers. Indonesia Says Prabowo, Trump to Ink Trade Deal in January (1) Earlier, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said that the US expects to reach a trade deal with Indonesia within the next couple of weeks, as the two countries are in almost daily contact. Talks had stalled in late 2025, with US officials quoted as saying that Indonesia was backpedaling on some of its commitments. Hartarto earlier attributed the delays to the US government shutdown and said that tariff talks were proceeding smoothly.
