(RTTNews) - Shopify Inc.(SHOP, SHOP.TO), a Canadian e-commerce company, on Wednesday reported a rise in revenue for the fourth quarter of 2025. For the three-month period to December 31, 2025, Shopify posted a net profit of $743 million, less than $1.293 billion in the same period last year. Excluding the impact of equity investments, net profit was $594 million as against the prior year's $458 million. Operating income moved up to $631 million from $465 million in the previous year. Revenue was $3.672 billion, up from $2.812 billion last year. Shopify's Board has authorized a share repurchase program of up to $2 billion. The program will go into effect on February 17 without a fixed expiration date. Looking ahead, for the first quarter of fiscal 2026, Shopify projects revenue to grow at a low-thirties percentage rate on a year-over-year basis, similar to the fourth quarter of 2025. SHOP was up by 11.32% at $141.62 in the pre-market trade on the Nasdaq. A shift in tone from Raízen SA — from publicly discussing raising fresh capital to declining to rule out talks on a potential debt restructuring — contributed to S&P Global Ratings ’ seven-notch credit downgrade of its credit score, among the largest ever for a Brazilian company. The sugar and ethanol company has been struggling for months with the impact of high interest rates and worse-than-expected harvests. Markets had been holding out for an agreement between controllers Cosan SA and Shell Plc for a solution — estimates are that Raízen needs at least 20 billion reais ($3.8 billion) in fresh capital. The drag on talks sometimes led to selloffs, which would reverse once the company denied it was looking at a restructuring. But after people familiar with the matter said last week Raízen was discussing potential scenarios including a debt haircut, the company didn’t push back. Early on Monday, it said it was enlisting advisers as it assessed options to strengthen liquidity and re-balance its finances. Shareholders were also silent in denying a restructuring was among options on the table. The bonds nosedived. “Historically in Brazil, companies that make this type of announcement tend to proceed with a debt restructuring,” S&P’s Flavia Bedran said in an interview. “The lack of communication on further asset sales or capitalization, combined with the bond selloff and the absence of a denial of restructuring, raised concerns.” S&P cut the company’s score from investment grade deep into junk in what Bedran described as one of its largest-ever downgrades of a Brazilian company. The time to stake your claim is before the crowd is talking about it. The early stages of the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution put hardware companies like Nvidia in the spotlight, and more recently, data centers have taken center stage as AI's top investment opportunity. But what's the next big thing for the business? I predict it will be edge computing, which only offers a limited number of ways to play it. What the heck is edge computing? In simplest terms, edge computing is computing work that needs to be done, but not work that's important or urgent enough to be handled by a personal device like a smartphone or laptop, yet also work that isn't worth offloading to a remote server. Wearables, security camera systems capable of facial recognition, self-driving vehicles, and so-called "smart" utility meters are all examples of edge computing devices. They handle tasks that can only be done with a true computer processor, but they don't consume valuable broadband bandwidth -- on-device computing (where it's utilized) is adequate. It's not exactly a new idea. You've likely not noticed its adoption because the whole point is not needing human involvement. Well, that, and the fact that the idea never caught on quite as much as first anticipated. As you might imagine, though, the advent of AI-capable processors is changing this. Edge computing work that wasn't possible before is now a reality. That's why technology market research outfit Technavio expects the global AI edge computing industry to grow at an average annualized pace of nearly 32% through 2029, although it's sure to keep growing well thereafter. A man detained by authorities in Arizona investigating the disappearance of Today show host Savannah Guthrie’s mother was released early on Wednesday after several hours of questioning, according to reports. An individual who identified himself to reporters as Carlos Palazuelos said he was the person held after a traffic stop on Tuesday in Rio Rico, about an hour’s drive from the Tucson area home from where Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing on 1 February. “I hope they get the suspect, because I’m not it,” he told the New York Times from what he said was his wife and mother-in-law’s home in Rio Rico, claiming not to have heard about the case. The Pima county sheriff’s department announced on Tuesday night, nine days after Guthrie vanished, that deputies had “detained a subject during a traffic stop” and that the person was “being questioned in connection to the Nancy Guthrie investigation”. Chris Nanos, the Pima county sheriff, said in a statement that his deputies and the FBI conducted a “court-authorized search” related to the investigation in Rio Rico, a town close to the Mexican border. Nanos gave no details about the search, and in a separate post on X early Wednesday said: “No press conference is scheduled at this time.” There was no official confirmation of the individual’s release from the FBI or Pima county officials by early morning Wednesday, but Angelica Carrillo, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s department, told the Times that investigators had “completed their search of a property in Rio Rico”. This is an investigational oral carbapenem for complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI), including pyelonephritis. Their Phase 3 trial (PIVOT-PO) met its primary endpoint and was stopped early after a planned interim analysis. The favorable data supported Tebi's NDA submission. Now, if the FDA approves this oral antibiotic, it could reduce hospitalization and IV infusion burden, benefiting a large patient population. Plus, SPRO now intends to commercialize its asset through a partnership with GSK plc ( GSK ). So, on balance, I feel it's a good time to lean bullish on SPRO at these levels. MDR Bacterial Infections Spero Therapeutics, Inc. is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company working on therapies for multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. They were founded back in 2013 and are currently headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Interestingly, their pipeline includes tebipenem HBr (Tebi) for complicated urinary tract infection (cUTI), including pyelonephritis. In my view, this asset class has great potential, generally speaking, but when you also consider SPRO's current regulatory progress, it makes the stock worth looking into. bluestocking/E+ via Getty Images Q4 2025 Market Review The Davenport Insider Buying Fund ( DBUYX ) increased 3.18% during the fourth quarter compared to a 2.66% gain in the S&P 500® Index. For the full year, DBUYX increased 4.26%, which lagged the 17.88% gain in the S&P 500. 2025 turned out to be very similar to 2024 in that the market was once again led by the “Large Growth” size/style box. Additionally, Communication Services and Technology were at the top of the sector leaderboard for the third year in a row. As we’ve written about ad nauseum, the Fund is underweight these areas due to lack of insider buying activity. That said, during the fourth quarter, we were encouraged by the Fund’s outperformance in a market where returns broadened (“value” outperformed “growth” during the quarter). Fund Update Contributors: The Fund’s top contributors during the fourth quarter were Eli Lilly and Co ( LLY ), Applied Materials Inc. ( AMAT ), and Align Technology Inc. ( ALGN ). Lilly shares surged over 40% during the quarter as the company posted strong results as it maintains the dominant franchise in GLP-1 weight loss drugs. Focus has now shifted to the launch of LLY’s oral GLP-1 in 1H2026 and we continue to be optimistic about the outlook for the company, though we are also cognizant of its >30x P/E multiple and reduced our position size into strength.
