European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said creating incentives for investments in Europe is a better approach to prevent capital outflows to other regions than imposing taxes. Current market developments signal that investors are interested in allocating more capital in Europe, Lagarde said Sunday during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference. “I’m more in favor of incentives than taxes,” Lagarde said. The overall sentiment is currently positive for Europe as “the money is coming in.” Lagarde made the comments amid increasingly urgent calls from ECB officials, European governments and corporate leaders to improve the European Union’s competitiveness amid a growing challenge from the US and China. Some officials have discussed imposing so-called exit taxes on people or businesses that shift capital out of the EU into other jurisdictions as a way to boost investment in the bloc. US President Donald Trump ’s disruptive trade policy is “a kick in the butt” for Europe to speed up economic reforms. But apart from the economic challenge, “it also brings European leaders closer together,” Lagarde said. The EU’s €90 billion ($107 billion) support package for Ukraine shows the bloc can push through meaningful decisions even if not all member states support a deal, she said. EU leaders held a special summit last week to address the issue of lagging competitiveness, building on comprehensive reports by former Italian Prime Ministers Mario Draghi and Enrico Letta . Lagarde said Sunday she expects some progress to be made this year toward the EU’s planned savings and investments union. Lagarde spoke a day after the ECB announced that it’s prepared to offer euro liquidity to monetary authorities from around the world, an effort to prevent market tension and increase global use of the single currency. In case you haven't noticed, the stock market has been practically unstoppable for the better part of the last seven years. The benchmark S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) has gained at least 16% in six of the previous seven years. Meanwhile, the iconic Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI) just surpassed 50,000 for the first time in its nearly 130-year history, and the growth-focused Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) continues to generate outsize returns. These gains haven't occurred by accident. They reflect a confluence of factors that have instilled optimism in investors, including (but not limited to): This last point, the nation's central bank reducing the federal funds target rate (the overnight lending rate between financial institutions), is especially important. Lowering the federal funds rate, which in turn reduces borrowing costs for consumers and businesses, is viewed as a key catalyst to boosting U.S. economic growth. If lending is less costly for businesses, they're more inclined to borrow with the intent to increase hiring, acquisition activity, and capital spent on innovation. Continue reading

Bush theatre, London Karim Khan’s tender portrait of South Asians finding companionship through shared grief and illness is played with crackling chemistry by Shobu Kapoor and Rehan Sheikh Love stories don’t traditionally start in diabetes clinics. Nor are two widowed South Asians dealing with declining health in their later years conventional romantic leads. But this is where Karim Khan’s quietly passionate play takes us. Despite its overlong running time, it’s a story that cuts straight to the heart. Khan is a whiz at writing authentic multilingual conversation. From their first meeting, Liaquat and Hema zoom between Hindi and English, building a vivid soundscape of diasporic life. In their sessions, Hema (played with sharp fire by Shobu Kapoor) is initially exasperated by Rehan Sheikh’s gentle, teddy-bear-like Liaquat and his blithe refusal to take his diabetes seriously. Over time, though, their chemistry starts to crackle, as they steal and feast on mangoes, and Hema forgets, for just a second, about their rising sugar levels. Continue reading...
