It may take Sony another three years to give the PS5 (pictured) a successor. | Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge Sony and Nintendo are reportedly feeling squeezed by RAM shortages as demand from AI data centers takes up an increasing share of memory chip production. In response to rising costs and dwindling chip supplies, Sony is considering pushing back the release of its next PlayStation console "to 2028 or even 2029," according to industry sources cited by Bloomberg , while Nintendo may increase the $450 price of its Switch 2 console this year. That delay would be a considerable divergence from Sony's usual release schedule, having launched a new console generation every six to seven years since the original PlayStation debuted in 1994. The French government is getting cold feet about Europe seeking to strengthen the international role of the euro and calling for an assessment of the economic risks. Finance chiefs are due to discuss how to promote the use of the currency in issuance and transactions at a meeting in Brussels later Monday. Paris backs that push but wants a deeper understanding of the costs to exporters if it further drives up the euro against the dollar, a finance ministry official said, briefing journalists on condition of anonymity. The caution comes after President Emmanuel Macron earlier this month pushed for leaders to discuss the strength of the single currency after it hit its highest level since 2021. France has traditionally been a vocal backer of initiatives to increase the heft of the euro in the global economy, and often bemoaned the dominance of the US dollar. Those sentiments date back as far as the 1960s when Valery Giscard D’Estaing coined the term of “exorbitant privilege” to describe the US currency. However, the French official said such privilege can’t necessarily be replicated for the euro area’s economy today, in part because it has a trade surplus with the rest of the world. If the euro were a safe haven for investors in a crisis, the bloc’s exporters would be hit both by lower demand from an economic downturn and an appreciation of the euro, the person said. Measures European ministers will discuss on Monday in Brussels include boosting the competitiveness of the European economy with deeper integration of its financial markets and promoting strategic autonomy in payments, notably with the digital euro. The benefits of encouraging the use of the currency in trade and global financial safety nets are also on the agenda. Over the weekend, the European Central Bank moved to promote the role of the euro by announcing it’s prepared to offer euro liquidity to central banks from around the world.
