Ovintiv Inc. agreed to sell its Anadarko oil and natural gas assets to an undisclosed buyer for cash proceeds of $3 billion, according to a statement Tuesday. The deal comes just weeks after the Denver-based driller’s $2.6 billion takeover of NuVista Energy Ltd. Ovintiv rose as much as 4.2% in after-hours trading. The sale includes rights to 360,000 net acres with the equivalent of 90,000 barrels of oil production, the company said . Following a wave of more than $450 billion in oil and gas deals since the start of 2023, shale producers have been looking to sell assets to help pay down debt. Wells Fargo is serving as financial adviser and Kirkland & Ellis LLP is serving as legal advisor to Ovintiv on the deal.

China's Unprecedented Oil Stockpiling Sparks Questions If Beijing Is Preparing For War Almost four years ago we pointed out something striking: while the world was still busy recovering from the covid Pandemic and suffering under soaring inflation - as seemingly everything was suddenly in short supply and prices were soaring - China was busy stockpiling pretty much everything at an unprecedented pace. Quoting a JPM report from March 2022 we noted that "while the world is short on commodities, China is not given they have started stockpiling commodities since 2019 and currently hold 80% of global copper inventories, 70% of corn, 51% of wheat, 46% of soybeans, 70% of crude oil, and over 20% of global aluminum inventories." The so-called Detroit Three — Stellantis, Ford and General Motors — have a long history of building cars in southern Ontario. But they’re making a lot fewer of them. A decade ago, the trio assembled 1.3 million cars and trucks in Canada. In 2024, they made around 400,000. Thousands of workers have already lost their jobs, and more are at risk as tariffs threaten the viability of vehicle exports to the US. So, the Carney government is looking to Asian carmakers to fill the void. In the span of weeks, the prime minister struck a deal to allow 49,000 EVs from China annually, floated the idea of a joint venture to build a Canadian-Chinese electric vehicle and proposed a new system of import credits designed to encourage the Detroit companies, along with Honda and Toyota, to keep building here. Whether any of that will work is an open question. As long as tariffs stay in place, it may be tough to get investment in a market that currently still ships most of its production to the US. And many in the automotive industry are uneasy about Carney’s decision to allow even a small quantity of cheap Chinese vehicles , which could distort the competitive landscape. But if Canada wants to save its car-manufacturing industry, it must eventually pivot away from the US, said Greig Mordue, an associate professor of engineering at McMaster University.
