Often, investors tend to compare the current technological phase to the dotcom era, but there is a crucial aspect that is typically put on the back burner: AI is spreading much faster across the globe. It took decades to get a widespread adoption of the internet; for AI, it is taking much less. A couple of weeks ago, as a joke, I showed Gemini to my father (the least tech-savvy person in the world) just to prove to him that AI knows the answer to almost every question. I thought that conversation would have ended there, but surprisingly, he decided to download the app. To date, he still doesn’t know how to send an email, but he uses Gemini on a daily basis. It took him a couple of decades to start using the internet for the first time since its invention, but just three years to start using AI. Would I have ever thought this back in 2022? Absolutely not. This is just an anecdote, but I think it is very useful to summarize my main vision about the current technological landscape: we don’t know what the world will look like in a couple of years. What we are living through has no precedent, and this statement is supported by objective data. Just 4 companies combined (Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet), through their huge CapEx, are supporting the entire US GDP growth. In 2026, they are expected to spend $700 billion on AI investments. To put this figure in perspective, it would be comparable to the entire GDP of countries like Singapore (AAA rated), Austria, and the United Arab Emirates. Not small economies. Japan's Top Toilet Maker Is 'Undervalued, Overlooked' AI Play Over 'Cryogenic Etching' Technology, Activist Investor Says Japan's top toilet maker, Toto, is an undervalued AI play according to activist investment fund Palliser Capital. Toto's chuck technology uses ceramics designed to remain stable at very low temperatures , which can help firmly secure silicon wafers during chip production. According to Palliser, Toto is "the most undervalued and overlooked AI memory beneficiary," and says that the Japanese company has a five-year competitive "moat" before other companies can catch up, adding that the advanced ceramics segment could deliver 30% or more revenue growth over the next few years, "driven by Nand upgrade cycle and stable replacement demand." Palliser also says that Toto is doing a terrible job of explaining the importance of electrostatic chucks to shareholders, and too little of the company's planned investment was devoted to growing the highly profitable segment. The activist investor began its involvement with Toto roughly six months ago and is a top-20 shareholder in the business, according to the Financial Times . The fund's other investments include holdings in property company Tokyo Tatemono, Keisei Electric Railway, which runs trains in Tokyo, and Japan Post Holdings. Donald Trump has spent his second term pushing for Federal Reserve rate cuts he hopes will reignite an economy that a few years ago boasted unemployment lower than at any time since the Nixon administration. A lot of that effort has focused on trying to push out the central bank’s current members with insults, threats, attempted firings and even an unprecedented criminal probe by his Justice Department. But even now, Fed officials are signaling renewed worries over inflation, with “several” policymakers suggesting the central bank may need to raise interest rates again. “Several participants” said they would have preferred a statement that surfaced the possibility of raising the funds rate “if inflation remains at above-target levels,” minutes of the central bank’s Jan. 27-28 policy meeting showed. That could put the Fed on a collision course not only with Trump, but his handpicked successor to be the next Fed chair. “The minutes carry a distinctly more hawkish tilt,” Gregory Daco, chief economist at EY-Parthenon, wrote in a note to clients. “This sets up an interesting dynamic if and when Kevin Warsh is confirmed as Fed chair.” What You Need to Know Today Strangely enough, traders in US interest-rate options have piled into positions that would profit from the Fed actually cutting rates sooner and more aggressively than investors currently expect. As trading resumed Tuesday after the long Presidents Day weekend, there was heavy buying of call options on futures on the Secured Overnight Financing Rate—an overnight interest rate tied to the Fed’s short-term benchmark—as well as options on Treasury note and bond futures, market data shows. "You can't really say there’s a clear direction at this point." After regular Comex trading ended for the day, the Federal Reserve released the minutes of its January 27-28 policy meeting, which indicated Fed officials showed little inclination to reduce interest rates, with most members preferring to see more progress on inflation before considering any further cuts.
