Sumitomo Pharma Co. shares declined after a Japanese government panel endorsed a conditional approval for its regenerative therapy, built on technology pioneered by a Nobel Prize laureate. The stock fell as much as 10% in early morning trading on Friday on what appeared to be profit-taking after the company was granted a seven-year clearance, with additional data to be collected during the approval period. “Reports of the smooth green-lighting of the drugs could lead to some profit-taking in the short term,” Morgan Stanley MUFG analysts including Shinichiro Muraoka wrote in a report. The endorsement marks a major step in Japan’s long-running push to foster a domestic industry in advanced cell-based treatments. The panel’s recommendations now move to the ministry for final approval, a process typically seen as a formality once expert endorsement is secured. Eventually, the stock has potential for longer-term gains, according to Morgan Stanley’s analysts. One catalyst to look for would be potential upward revisions to guidance, possibly in the first half of April, they added. Others concurred: “While the treatment could potentially see widespread use and become a blockbuster in Japan and the US over the long term, we expect almost no profit contribution near term,” Hidemaru Yamaguchi , an analyst at Citigroup Global Markets Japan Inc., wrote in a note. Investor enthusiasm has already surged ahead of the decision. Sumitomo shares have more than tripled over the past year as optimism around the Parkinson’s therapy grew, while Cuorips’ stock has more than doubled , reflecting expectations that Japan’s streamlined approval system could translate into commercial gains. Cuorips Inc. ’s heart failure therapy, also built on the technology, won a backing. The therapies are aimed at restoring lost function, a central aim of regenerative medicine. Sumitomo’s treatment seeks to replenish dopamine-producing neurons damaged by Parkinson’s, while Cuorips’ therapy is designed to repa...
