martinrlee/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Intro Hunting for large‑cap, high‑yield dividend plays led me to The Western Union Company ( WU ) last October. The yield was an eye‑catching 11% back then, and I was quite sure I’d uncover something beneath the surface that explained why such a high payout couldn’t possibly be sustainable. From what I’ve seen, yields above 7% usually hint at underlying issues or some kind of special situation. There’s no free lunch, after all. But the deeper I dug, the more it became clear that WU case deserves a different lens — it might even be one of those rare occasions where the exception genuinely proves the rule. Since I broke down Western Union’s longer-term journey in more detail in my last piece, let’s move straight to the freshest development — today’s earnings release . Q4 FY2025 Earnings Adjusted Q4 revenue came in at $1.0 billion, down 5% YOY, missing expectations by roughly $30 million, while full‑year adjusted revenue reached $4.1 billion, down 2% excluding Iraq impact ($ transfers in Iraq were suspended in late 2023 by the Iraqi Central Bank, but were gradually restored during 2024). Consumer Services remained the highest growth segment, with adjusted revenue up 26% in Q4 and 29% for the full year. Branded Digital delivered a steady 6% adjusted growth in both periods. Q4 adjusted EPS of $0.45 beat estimates by $0.02, bringing full‑year adjusted EPS to $1.75. The company attributed the revenue miss to weakness in its Americas retail business. Still, the good news was that after a dismal November, the U.S.–Mexico corridor stabilized in December: WU Mexico Corridor Dynamics (WU Earnings Presentation) The CEO expressed optimism in the earnings release regarding the company’s overall trajectory: “We strengthened our Consumer Services offerings, expanded our owned retail footprint, and accelerated our transition to a more digital-first operating model. Looking ahead to 2026, we are confident in our ability to execute against o...

A ship believed to be carrying Russian fuels is on its way to Cuba, putting US President Donald Trump ’s sanctions to the test amid the island’s deepening energy crisis. The vessel Sea Horse, expected to arrive in early March, is carrying much-needed fuels to Cuba, according to data from maritime intelligence firm Kpler Ltd. The country is short on fuels critical for cooking, transportation and power generation, with it literally struggling to keep the lights on. Available electricity has plummeted since the start of the year and satellite imagery found the level of light at night is down as much as 50%. Pressure on Havana has been mounting since late last year, when US forces seized a ship carrying Venezuelan crude to Cuba. After the subsequent capture of Venezuelan leader and longtime ally Nicolas Maduro , the Trump administration swiftly ordered the interim government left behind to halt shipments of crude to the communist-run island. Trump also threatened tariffs on any nation that supplies Cuba with fuel, leading Mexico, a steady supplier, to cut off shipments as well. Read More: Chile Agrees to Send Humanitarian Aid to Cuba, Joining Mexico Cuba, which doesn’t produce much oil, heavily depends on imports of fuels or crude to run its refineries. The Sea Horse received supplies in a ship-to-ship transfer off the coast of Cyprus and is likely carrying nearly 200,000 barrels of Russian gasoil, Kpler’s lead oil analyst Matt Smith said. Gasoil broadly refers to diesel-type fuels used in transportation and power generation. It’s unclear whether the Sea Horse will be able to break the US blockade, which so far has seized at least nine ships involved in the illicit transport of sanctioned oil. Russia, for its part, has come under deeper international sanctions over its four-year-long war on Ukraine and both US and European nations have stepped up moves to seize tankers from the so-called shadow fleet that helps keep sanctioned barrels flowing. The US military presence i...

Steven Spielberg Flees California Amid Raging Wealth Tax Battle Another day, another rich liberal leaving a state over policies they promoted. In today's episode of modern hypocrisy, Steven Spielberg , director of blockbuster hits like Jaws , E.T. , Poltergeist and Saving Private Ryan , has moved to Manhattan , according to the Los Angeles Times . A spokesperson for one of Hollywood’s most reliable Democrat Party donors was quick to insist the relocation has nothing to do with California’s highly controversial wealth tax proposal. “ Steven’s move to the East Coast is both long-planned and driven purely by his and Kate Capshaw’s desire to be closer to their New York-based children and grandchildren ,” spokeswoman Terry Press told the newspaper. Unsurprisingly, Press declined to say where Spielberg stands on the wealth tax when asked. California is now seriously considering a new wealth tax targeting billionaires, including a levy on unrealized gains. The idea has already spooked investors and contributed to several high-profile tech figures running for the exits. It’s a familiar pattern when progressive policies finally start to bite, a surprising number of billionaires discover a sudden deep affection for Florida, Texas, or even New York. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin quietly began unwinding portions of their financial empires in California in the days leading up to Christmas, while Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped $150 million on a Miami mansion . Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan had been looking for a home on Indian Creek Island, the ultra-exclusive, heavily guarded enclave nicknamed “Billionaire Bunker” that is already home to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, former NFL star quarterback Tom Brady, and Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump. Even Jeffrey Epstein pal Reid Hoffman, LinkedIn co-founder and major Democratic donor, has taken aim at the billionaire tax proposal, slamming it as a "horrendous idea" that could drive tech founders and exec...

The legislation was introduced on Thursday by state senator Tom Umberg and co-authored by state senator Sabrina Cervantes. Umberg said the measure aimed to safeguard voters from “ruthless intimidation” near polling locations. Continue reading...

Pipelines onurdongel/E+ via Getty Images The Alerian Master Limited Partnership ETF ( AMLP ) is one of the best vehicles through which to get exposure to master limited partnerships [MLPs]. MLPs, which have some of the highest yields out of all types of publicly traded securities, are very desirable to income-focused investors, because they offer high and growing income. AMLP yields 7.7%; who wouldn't want a yield like that? At the same time, individual MLPs can be very risky. Most of them have high dividend yields and high payout ratios, meaning that they usually resort to heavy levels of debt to finance new projects. Given that most MLPs are in the midstream energy space , these projects (e.g. oil pipelines) are usually large and costly. In times of rising interest rates, MLPs’ cash flows can be strained by interest payments and payout ratios can push into unsustainable territory. Here, the risk of dividend cuts becomes very real. When I call MLP dividend cuts a “risk,” I don’t mean a distant possibility that “could” happen but probably won’t. I mean a true risk that becomes material pretty frequently. From 2016 to 2020, Plains All American Pipeline endured three dividend cuts, which collectively took the quarterly payout from $0.70 to $0.18. Eventually, the payout climbed even higher than its 2016 level, but the unit price never recovered. When you buy an MLP ETF like AMLP, you spread all of that risk across many holdings, just like you do with stock ETFs. If you have no information edge, that diversification is a benefit in itself: most investors are best off diversifying widely. In the case of MLPs, the ETF structure comes with yet another benefit: tax simplicity. ETFs are taxed as regular corporations, which eliminates the headache of filing a K-1 tax form, a significant burden to small time investors with no accounting expertise. For this reason, I think an investment in AMLP beats holding individual MLP's for 90% of investors. As I'll show in the ensuing par...
