Smith Collection | Gado | Archive Photos | Getty Images The head of Amazon's artificial general intelligence lab is leaving the company less than two years after joining through a so-called acqui-hire deal of his startup Adept. David Luan announced his departure Tuesday in a LinkedIn post , saying he will exit at the end of the week "to cook up something new." Amazon tapped Luan in December 2024 to oversee its newly created AGI lab , based in San Francisco. The lab is focused on "long-term research bets," including developing "useful AI agents." Last year, the group released Amazon's Nova frontier model, which the company hopes will compete with leading AI models like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude and Google's Gemini. "There's incredible work to be done at Amazon and opportunities for me to take on more areas," Luan wrote. "But with AGI so close, I decided to spend 100% of my time on teaching AI systems brand new capabilities." Luan's departure comes after Amazon announced a major reorganization of its AGI division late last year , bringing it under Peter DeSantis, a 27-year veteran of the company and a senior vice president in its cloud unit. AGI refers to artificial intelligence that can perform as well or better than humans on most tasks. Amazon in June 2024 hired Luan and other top executives from Adept. It also licensed technology from Adept, including some of its AI models and datasets. The deal size was not disclosed. Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson in January said his agency would review these AI acqui-hire deals to learn whether tech companies are attempting to evade regulatory reviews. The agency in 2024 opened a probe into Amazon's hiring of Adept employees. AI acqui-hire deals have also come under scrutiny from lawmakers , including Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. ...

Earnings Call Insights: Cipher Digital (CIFR) Q4 2025 Management View CEO Tyler Page opened by declaring 2025 "a defining year for Cipher" and described a completed transformation "from a bitcoin miner with sourcing and development expertise into a digital infrastructure company purpose built to deliver hyperscale compute." He announced, "we are formally rebranding the company as Cipher Digital," emphasizing the company's evolution into a provider of power-dense, large-scale facilities for hyperscale clients, and the shift toward "stable, long-duration cash flows and long-term leases with best-in-class hyperscalers." Page highlighted major milestones, including securing long-term leases, executing large-scale project financings, advancing multiple data center projects, and a $2 billion bond offering that "was met with exceptional investor demand, which allowed us to price it at a yield of 1 full percent lower than our previous bond offering at 6.125%." The company sold its 49% interest in three bitcoin mining joint ventures to Canaan in an all-stock deal, further accelerating its pivot from bitcoin mining. "Given our desire for no further capital investment in the bitcoin mining, and given Canaan's role as the supplier of mining rigs to the JV sites, Canaan is the most natural buyer to acquire our equity interest," said Page. CFO Greg Mumford stated, "Over the past year, Cipher took significant steps to reshape the financial profile of the company. We materially strengthened the financial foundation of the business by securing long-duration contracted cash flows in HPC hosting by expanding relationships with investment-grade counterparties and by broadening our access to capital." Outlook Page announced that "we expect our leases to generate $669 million of average annualized net operating income from October 2026 to September 2036. By 2035, we project approximately $754 million in annual net operating income." Management emphasized the predictability of these contr...

Earnings Call Insights: Xenia Hotels & Resorts (XHR) Q4 2025 Management View Marcel Verbaas, Chairman and CEO, highlighted that "adjusted EBITDAre exceeded our expectations set at the beginning of the year as well as our more recent outlook." He noted total RevPAR growth of 8% for the year, driven by strong group demand and encouraging results from the Grand Hyatt Scottsdale. The company executed over $120 million in share repurchases and delivered double-digit percentage growth in adjusted FFO per share compared to 2024. Xenia sold Fairmont Dallas at an attractive price, acquired the land under Hyatt Regency Santa Clara, and invested approximately $87 million in portfolio enhancements. For Q4, net income was $6.1 million, adjusted EBITDAre was $63.6 million, and adjusted FFO per share was $0.45, with both results at or above the top end of guidance. Same-property RevPAR increased 4.5%, and total RevPAR rose 6.7% for the quarter. "Our hotels in the Houston market also experienced growth in RevPAR and total RevPAR as market performance improved after facing difficult year-over-year comparisons in the third quarter." Barry Bloom, President & COO, reported that Q4 same-property RevPAR was $176.45 with occupancy of 66.1% and an average daily rate of $266.88. Total RevPAR reached $325.52, an increase of 6.7%. For the year, Grand Hyatt Scottsdale saw RevPAR up over 104%, and several other properties posted robust gains. "Room night demand for our hotels' largest accounts grew at a mid-teens percentage rate in the fourth quarter as compared to the fourth quarter of 2024." Atish Shah, EVP, CFO & Treasurer, stated, "At year-end, we had approximately $1.4 billion of outstanding debt, just over 3/4 of our debt was fixed or hedged to fixed." The company repurchased about 9.4 million shares in 2025. "We expect adjusted FFO per share to increase nearly 7% from 2025 to $1.89 at the midpoint." Outlook Initial 2026 guidance projects 1.5% to 4.5% same-property RevPAR growth (3% midpo...

JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Shares of Dow Inc. ( DOW ) have been a poor performer over the past year as the company has struggled with a severe downcycle in the chemicals sector. This has forced the company to prioritize cash preservation, cutting jobs, slashing its dividend, and selling assets. Its Q4 results indicated that this effort is ongoing, though these steps will help the company endure this prolonged downturn. I last covered shares of Dow in November , rating the stock a “ B uy,” and that call has played out very well with the stock up 30% since then. Shares have even moved past my $27 target, doing so more quickly than expected; with updated financials, now is a good time to revisit Dow. Seeking Alpha In the company’s fourth quarter , Dow earned $1.81 per share, which beat estimates by $2.32. Revenue was still down 8%, reflecting ongoing challenges across segments, with pricing pressure remaining pronounced. Operating EBITDA was $741 million, down from $1.21 billion last year. Management estimates that its cost-savings program delivered $165 million of in-period costs. As you can see below, every end market across every geography is mixed or weak. In particular, the construction and auto sectors are facing sustained weakness, outside Chinese EVs. We are seeing increased supply-side reductions, especially in packaging, though the impact on pricing has been more muted than hoped to start 2026. Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics revenue was $4.7 billion in Q4, down 11% from last year. Volumes were down 2%, with prices down 9%. This resulted in $215 million of EBIT with margins compressing 390 bps from last year to 4.5%. Packaging demand is soft given fairly tepid consumer spending trends. While there has been hope of better pricing in 2026 thanks to supply curtailments, these hopes were dimmed last week on news of containerboard price cuts. I expect plastic packaging pricing to remain soft. While I do not expect a recession, I struggle to s...

Bloomberg reported the news , citing people familiar with the matter, and said the discussions are in early stages. The report said Stripe is considering buying all or some segments of PayPal's business. The news comes a day after reports that buyer interest has picked up in the company following its recent stock slump. PayPal and Stripe declined to comment on the report. PayPal, which is grappling with slowing growth in an increasingly competitive financial payments industry, has plummeted more than 19% since the start of the year. peterschreiber.media/iStock via Getty Images Constellation Energy ( CEG ) closed +6.4% on Tuesday, making it one of the day's five largest gainers on the S&P 500, after reporting better-than-expected Q4 adjusted earnings and a 13% Y/Y increase in revenues to $6.07B, helped by rising electricity demand from data centers. Investors were undaunted by Constellation's ( CEG ) decision to delay its FY 2026 guidance until March, and c ompany executives highlighted that the company has delivered full-year profits ahead of the midpoint of its guidance range for four straight years. The company's nuclear fleet produced 45,459 GWh during Q4, down very slightly from 45,494 GWh in the year-earlier quarter, due to higher planned refueling and non-refueling outage days compared with last year. Constellation ( CEG ) signed an agreement last month with Dallas-based CyrusOne to connect and serve a new data center adjacent to the Freestone Energy Center in Texas and has agreements with Meta to keep one of its reactors in Illinois operating for 20 years and with Microsoft to restart the former Three Mile Island nuclear reactor in Pennsylvania. The company offered a "solid" Q4 performance, Melius Research analyst James West wrote after the results, seeing Constellation ( CEG ) as "well-positioned to supply rapidly growing data center demand in 2026, especially with an expanded portfolio in natural gas and ERCOT." The market could be overlooking Constellation's ( CEG ) potential for creating further value by building new power generation projects, Citi analysts said, noting the company's land holdings in New York and Texas, its natural gas turbines in Maryland, and its industry relationships, even as it says it wants to wait for market conditions to improve before it invests in those opportunities.
