Gloomy and cold – Tupperware sky and drizzle in the air. But tranquil, at least. Small mercies. Walthamstow Wetlands – a 211-hectare nature reserve centred on 10 reservoirs in north-east London. Jewel in the Lee Valley’s crown, and as good a place for waterbirds as any in the capital. Six tufted ducks drift across – a posse of monochrome floaters on a mission to nowhere. A little grebe – floating powder puff – does its trademark jump-and-dive, surfacing 30 seconds later, 25 yards to the left of where I expected. Extreme peace descends on me. Birdfulness, the best way to be. Continue reading...

CarlosAndreSantos/iStock via Getty Images Overview During the fourth quarter, the Wasatch Frontier Emerging Small Countries Fund—Investor Class decreased -4.51%, underperforming the benchmark MSCI Frontier Emerging Markets Index, which was up 7.60%. As the year draws to a close, we also wanted to provide an update on annual performance. For the year, the Fund gained 4.35%, while the Index was up 42.94%. The year was indeed a challenging one in terms of relative performance. What's been most frustrating about the relative results, both for the fourth quarter and the calendar year, is that we believe fundamentals for most of our companies remain quite strong, and we are quite positive on the outlook of our portfolio going forward. For the calendar year and the latter half of the fourth quarter, the dollar's weakening benefited stocks that had been the hardest hit by its prior strength. In general, the frontier emerging-market stocks that performed the strongest in 2025 were those that had suffered the steepest declines in recent years. In this environment, countries most impacted by the prolonged period of dollar strength experienced a dramatic uplift from what had been years of beaten-up levels of equity-market valuation and currency pressure. For example, countries we have little exposure to—such as Pakistan, Egypt and Colombia that had languished significantly as a result of the dollar's prior strength—experienced some of the strongest comebacks, increasing 50% to 100% or more for the year. Pla2na/iStock via Getty Images Originally published on February 20, 2026 By Jennifer Nash Consumer sentiment rose for a third straight month in February, reaching its highest level since August. The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index inched up 0.2 points (0.4%) to 56.6 this month, coming in below the forecasted 57.3. However, this six-month peak offers little relief as sentiment remains historically low, currently sitting in the 3rd percentile of the series' history. The Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index is a monthly survey of consumer confidence levels in the U.S. with regard to the economy, personal finances, business conditions, and buying conditions, conducted by the University of Michigan. There are two reports released each month: a preliminary report released mid-month and a final report released at the end of the month. Joanne Hsu, the director of surveys, made the following comments : Consumer sentiment stagnated this month with very little change, just 0.2 index points higher than January. All index components posted insignificant movements this month; overall, consumers do not perceive any material differences in the economy from last month. About 46% of consumers spontaneously mentioned high prices eroding their personal finances; readings have exceeded 40% for seven months in a row. Sentiment is about 13% below a year ago and 21% below January 2025. That said, views vary considerably across the population. A sizable month-to-month increase in sentiment for the largest stockholders was fully offset by a decline among consumers without stock holdings. Similar divergences were seen across income and education, where higher-income or college educated consumers exhibited increases in sentiment while lower-income or less-educated counterparts did not. With their much stronger income prospects and investment portfolios, wealthier and higher-income consumers feel better insulated from any possible risks to the economy. See the chart below for a long-term perspec...

Douglas Rissing/iStock via Getty Images The US government debt monster needs to be looked at in context, not by itself in a vacuum, though I’ll post the debt-in-a-vacuum chart at the bottom of the article for your amusement. At the end of Q4, the US national debt reached $38.51 trillion, having soared by yet another $2.30 trillion over the 12 months in the calendar year 2025, or by 6.3%. This includes the first half of the year, when the debt ceiling blocked the government from adding to its mountain of Treasury securities and the level of debt got stuck for six months. And then in July, after the debt ceiling was resolved, the debt began to explode. All of that $2.3 trillion was added in the second half amid a tsunami of debt issuance. Debt was flying by so fast, it was hard to see. In Q4 alone, so quarter over quarter, the debt rose by $877 billion, or by 2.3% from Q3. With Q4 GDP having been released on Friday - GDP got hit by a massive plunge in government spending due to the shutdown - the US debt-to-GDP ratio rose to 122.3% at the end of Q4, the highest since Q1 2021 as the Covid spike was winding down. This debt is the actual amount in Treasury securities that the US government owes and cannot walk away from. They are either traded in the markets ($28.84 trillion) or are held by government pension funds, the Social Security Trust Fund, etc. that owe their beneficiaries those funds ($7.38 trillion). The debt-to-GDP ratio is the total Treasury debt at the end of the quarter in dollars, not adjusted for inflation, divided by annual rate of “current dollar” GDP in dollars for that quarter, also not adjusted for inflation. Neither is adjusted for inflation for an apples-to-apples comparison. Since the inflation factor is the same in the numerator and denominator, it cancels out and is not impacting the ratio. The debt-to-GDP ratio rose because the debt increased by 2.3% in Q4 from Q3, while current-dollar GDP increased by only 1.3%. $38.51 trillion in debt meets $...
