Chinese technology stocks in Hong Kong are poised for their worst month in two years, weighed by weak earnings and a lack of buying by mainland investors. The Hang Seng Tech Index has dropped 10% in February, set for the biggest monthly decline since January 2024. The gauge is now deep in a bear market, having tumbled nearly 23% from an October high. Sentiment toward China’s Internet giants has cooled amid concerns over valuations and rising competition that’s eroding corporate bottom line. Meanwhile, investors are increasingly turning to a wave of new listings by chipmakers and AI startups for exposure to pure AI plays , a rotation that’s hurting China’s Big Tech stocks. “The market is shifting from growth-at-all-cost to profitability and cash flow — punishing unprofitable or weak-margin names,” said Ravi Wong , first vice president at Yan Yun Family Office (HK) Ltd. The index is facing earnings concerns due to AI investment drag and cost pressure, as well as intensified competition as incremental growth is harder, he said. The HSTECH gauge eked out gains on Friday after a three-day slide of about 5%. The sluggish performance in Chinese technology stocks is a contrast to the broader Asia, where the MSCI’s regional benchmark is set for the best February performance since the inception of the index in 1998. Tech stocks are also losing support from mainland investors, who had earlier piled into the country’s tech champions. They sold HK$7.4 billion ($946 million) worth of stocks traded in Hong Kong on Thursday, adding to the HK$4 billion of such sales the previous day and marking the heaviest outflow since a record in late August. Baidu Inc. is among the biggest decliners on the Hang Seng Tech gauge this month, losing more than 19%. The stock fluctuated on Friday after the firm reported another quarterly drop in revenue amid weakness in its core advertising and AI businesses. Investors will be watching for earnings from JD.com Inc. and Bilibili Inc. due next week for ...

Iranian Foreign Ministry | WANA | Via Reuters The latest round of U.S.-Iran talks did not lead to a breakthrough, with both sides agreeing to extend negotiations, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said, describing the discussions as the "most intense so far." "Further progress has been made in our diplomatic engagement with the United States," said Araghchi, adding that both sides planned to engage in a more "detailed" manner on critical issues including termination of U.S. sanctions on Iran and "nuclear-related steps." The two sides made "significant progress" in the high-stakes talks in Geneva, Switzerland, and agreed to meet next week to discuss technical details in Vienna, according to Oman's foreign minister Badr Albusaidi , the mediator of the talks. Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump said that Iran wants to make a "deal" more than the U.S. while Tehran's refusal to commit to not developing nuclear weapons remains a key sticking point holding up the agreement. In his State of the Union address earlier this week, Trump said that "They [Iran] want to make a deal, but we haven't heard those secret words: We will never have a nuclear weapon." Tensions continued to run high as the U.S. has amassed a large military force in the Middle East with Trump last week warning that "bad things" would happen if Iran does not agree to a deal over the future of its nuclear program. The third round of talks this week were led by U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, while Araghchi headed the Iranian delegation. The Wall Street Journal reported earlier Friday that the U.S. team had tough demands for the Iranians, including that they destroy the three main nuclear sites at Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan, and deliver all of its remaining enriched uranium...
