A wave of global money chasing high-flying shares of South Korean chipmakers is spurring abnormal moves and volumes in exchange‑traded funds. Daily turnover in the US-listed iShares MSCI South Korea ETF soared to a record high of $6.4 billion Thursday. Korean chip ETFs have also seen volumes climb in Hong Kong, and a Shanghai-traded semiconductor fund had to halt trading Friday after its premium spiked. The aberrations are an indication of the scope of global demand for exposure to one of the hottest equity trades. In comparison, the S&P 500 Index is up less than 1%, while the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has gained 16%. Still, demand for the Korean fund may not solely reflect US appetite. Korean retail investors are increasingly buying overseas ETFs as the stronger dollar amplifies returns on US-listed funds, according to Kang Jinhyeok , a market analyst at Shinhan Securities. Meanwhile, Hong Kong investors have been actively buying leveraged ETFs linked to single Korean chip stocks. The CSOP SK Hynix Daily 2x Leveraged Product which doubles bets on the Korean memory maker, marked record daily turnover of HK$2.4 billion ($307 million) Thursday. Mainland Chinese investors have also been rushing in. The Huatai-PineBridge CSI KRX China-Korea Semiconductor ETF briefly halted trading after the premium over its underlying assets surged to an all-time high of more than 17%. The fund lists Samsung and SK Hynix among its top holdings, along with local chipmaker Cambricon Technologies Corp.

Now, more than ever, the Japanese giant is expanding the footprint of its valuable intellectual property (IP) across movies to merchandise and theme parks, betting on nostalgia and new gamers, to drive sales of its flagship Switch 2 console and key games. "These characters, like Mario and Pikachu, they're obviously Nintendo's main IP franchises, and because they are so recognizable, they have a massive appeal," Reuben Martens, a lecturer in film and media studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, told CNBC. In November, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa laid out the company's thinking behind the IP push. "We believe the combination of these three elements — the core of our business being Nintendo's unique and original entertainment, and our guiding principles of growing the Nintendo IP fanbase and fostering long-term relationships with our consumers — will drive the medium-to-long-term growth of our business and allow us to leverage our unique strengths," Furukawa said.
