Lebanon ’s national airline is in talks to expand its fleet of Airbus SE jets to capitalize on increased demand and to build out its new low-cost subsidiary. Middle East Airlines is negotiating with the European planemaker for about a dozen aircraft, according to people familiar with the matter. The order would consist mainly of narrowbody A320 family jets, along with a couple of widebody A330s, the people said, asking not to be identified discussing private negotiations. The flag carrier is also in talks with aircraft lessors for additional jets, the people said. Discussions with Airbus and some of the lessors are still at an early stage and may not result in a deal, they said. MEA didn’t respond to requests for comment. Airbus declined to comment. MEA has experienced a turbulent few years as Israel ’s war on several fronts in the region curtailed travel to Lebanon and disrupted the airline’s operations. The carrier was forced to move a significant portion of its fleet out of the country to prevent any collateral damage. MEA is launching budget subsidiary Fly Beirut to offer another option for passengers currently limited to a few airlines that fly to the capital and usually charge a premium on busy routes such as Dubai and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Airlines in the Middle East are projected to be the most profitable among carriers globally this year, according to the International Air Transport Association . The number of passengers is also expected to grow at a higher rate than elsewhere to reach 240 million. A portion of the new aircraft will go to the budget venture, the people said. MEA operates an all-Airbus fleet of 22 jets, including the A321neo and the larger A330 models.

China’s central bank announced a new set of rules to facilitate cross-border yuan funding between local and foreign financial institutions, paving the way to boost the currency’s usage abroad. The People’s Bank of China listed a raft of rules for offshore yuan funding including bond repurchases and interbank loans, according to its statement late on Thursday. Under the framework, local banks’ overseas yuan lending limits will be linked to their capital conditions and the PBOC can fine-tune those caps to keep risks in check. The PBOC also said that all yuan-denominated cross-border interbank financing must be brought under the new regulatory framework, requiring banks to establish comprehensive risk management and internal control systems. The measures are aimed at keeping liquidity in the offshore market stable and to promote cross-border yuan usage, the PBOC said. The initiative aligns with Beijing’s broader push to elevate the yuan’s role as a global funding currency, a key step in advancing its internationalization . Demand for yuan financing overseas has grown in recent years, supported by borrowing costs that are typically lower than those of the dollar and the euro. “The new rule should help to further bridge onshore-offshore yuan money markets, and stabilize offshore funding conditions,” said Jeffrey Zhang , an emerging markets strategist at Credit Agricole CIB. The PBOC’s action follows its decision late last month to allow foreign investors to participate in onshore repo transactions using global standards. Together, these initiatives are expected to boost cross-border funding. To meet the growing demand for the offshore yuan, Hong Kong has already doubled the total size of the so-called RMB Business Facility in the city from this month. The quota previously available to banks was drained as their clients borrowed more yuan for trade financing, capital expenditure and other business purposes. Against this backdrop, there’s potential for onshore commercial b...

UK Locks In Critical Minerals Deal With Kazakhstan To Cut Reliance On China UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has unveiled a critical minerals agreement with Kazakhstan on Thursday as Western governments move to shift supply chains away from China , moving ahead on London's plans to diversify its critical mineral sourcing. This after the British government in its Critical Mineral Strategy published last year identified Kazakhstan as producing 22 of the 36 minerals identified in the report as vital and needed by Britain. via Associated Press Britain's top diplomat is hosting foreign ministers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan at Lancaster House in London - and Beijing officials are no doubt watching closely from afar. "Central Asia is an important region with huge potential to boost economic growth," Cooper said in a statement to Politico . "These agreements deliver for British businesses, strengthen economic security and are a clear demonstration of U.K. support for the independence of the Central Asian states." A memorandum of understanding has been signed by Kazakhstan's Deputy Industry Minister Olzhas Saparbekov and UK Trade Minister Chris Bryant, amid the summit. Kazakhstan supplies more than 40% of the world’s uranium and ranks among the top producers of titanium . It is also a top-ten exporter of copper and zinc . Needless to say, this makes the central Asian country a top competitor to China - and thus 'alternative' source for the West - given it has huge rare Earth deposits that could power the next tech boom. "Unlike in the West, Central Asian governments are enthusiastic about the prospect of turning their vast deposits of [rare earth minerals and rare metals] into a new source of revenue for the local economies," a prior report in The Interpreter stated. "The U.K. set out a Critical Minerals Strategy last November to ensure that by 2035 no more than 60 percent of Britain’s supply of any one critical mineral comes from ...

Optimism and quiet confidence gave way to jubilation with party’s historic victory in Gorton and Denton byelection UK politics live – latest updates When the result dropped soon after, it would be obvious this was an historic moment for the Greens; toppling one of Labour’s largest majorities, and claiming their first parliamentary seat north of Herefordshire by winning the Gorton and Denton byelection. But very early on Friday morning, at the count in the Manchester Central Convention Complex, it would be easy to think nothing out of the ordinary was happening. Green activists and counting agents inside the hall maintained an air of calm, gradually upping their briefings from cautiously optimistic to quietly confident. But there was little sense within the room that this was the start of a seismic shift in British politics. Continue reading...
