After a very bullish period in 2025, the stock has pulled back to much more reasonable levels. The company is hosting its first-ever investor day on June 1, and I believe this is exactly the catalyst the company needs. I have been bearish on the stock for a while , with my thesis largely hinging on valuation being way too stretched relative to the near-term opportunity. Of course, quantum has long-term staying power, and I believe many of the pure-play companies will be multiple times higher in 3-5 years from now. But short-term trading volatility - much like what was experienced during 2025 - can drive bearish opportunities. On the contrary, when quantum companies are progressing with their technology and produce early signs of broad commercialization, the upside reward can be significant. A previously undetected outbreak of Ebola is coursing through parts of central Africa, and the US appears to be doing little to help stop it, after massive cuts to global and domestic public health efforts. There is no cure and no vaccine for the rare Bundibugyo variant of Ebola, which has caused two outbreaks in recent decades. Health leaders and scientists are now racing to understand where the virus is spreading and attempting to stop it – but the US is notably absent in these efforts. In the past year, the US Agency for International Development (USAID) has been dismantled, thousands of staff at US health agencies were laid off, communications stalled and key scientific research canceled. There are 482 suspected cases and about 116 deaths reported since April in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), with two cases and one death in Uganda and potential spread to neighboring South Sudan. The outbreak “might have been going on for a few months”, said Kristian Andersen, a professor of immunology and microbiology at Scripps Research. The outbreak was immediately declared a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC) by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), before even convening the committee that usually makes that determination. Officials say it may last for months. “The DRC is one of the most vulnerable health systems in the world, and was the second-biggest recipient of USAID funding,” said Matthew Kavanagh, director of the Center for Global Health Policy and Politics at Georgetown University. The US withdrawal of funding with “zero notice” has been “disruptive to the country’s basic activities”, he said. US foreign assistance to the DRC dropped from $1.4bn in 2024 to $431m in 2025 and only $21m so far this year. Maths was never my thing. I quite enjoyed it at O-level, to the extent that I chose to do it at A-level. As early as the first week of the A-level course, however, it became abundantly clear that the subject was quite beyond me. I simply couldn’t make head or tail of what the teacher was on about. Looking around at the rest of the class quietly getting on with it, I remember wondering if there had been some primer course over the summer that everyone but me had attended. I just didn’t get it. There didn’t seem to be any certainties any more, rarely anything so straightforward as a right or wrong answer. There were enough grey areas in my other subjects – English and history. From my maths I wanted certainty, objective truth, which as far as I could see wasn’t part of it any more. Where were the times tables, for example? I’d nailed those good and proper at a very early age. In ascending order of difficulty I would rate them as follows: two, 10, five, 11, three, four, six, eight, seven and 12. You’ll notice that the nine times table does not feature on this list. Why? Well, I found it too easy. It was my speciality. But that’s because I was cheating – or so it felt – as someone had showed me a quick trick with which to nail the nines, as it were. For this reason, I was fascinated to read that in an analysis of times tables answers by primary school children, it was ones that involved the number nine that were most often wrong. They’re not the only ones. When the then school standards minister Nick Gibb announced the rollout of national multiplication tests in 2018, he refused to attempt 8x9 on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. What’s the matter with everyone? Nines are easy! If you kind of cheat, like me. What you do is this. Hold your hands up, palms facing you. Through the first two months of the year, the index returned 0.75% as economic data remained broadly resilient despite concerns around the February sell-off in software stocks, a key tariff decision by the Supreme Court and the growing drumbeat of war in the Middle East. The US and Israel launched combat operations against Iran on February 28, and the markets spent most of March reeling from the ongoing conflict, resulting in Brent crude oil experiencing its biggest quarterly increase since the Gulf War in 1990. While one normally thinks of a flight-to-quality trade as a rally in Treasury yields as investors move away from risk assets to safer alternatives, this was not the case in March as rates pushed higher across the curve. The Fed held rates steady at the March 18 meeting and avoided any kind of hints about the future path of rates. Despite concerns around the impact of higher energy prices on inflation due to the conflict, no participants viewed a 2026 hike as appropriate at this time. At his press conference, Chairman Jerome Powell alleviated some concern around the leadership of the Federal Reserve, stating that he would remain as chair pro tempore until his replacement is confirmed. Updates by sector Treasury The entire Treasury yield curve pushed higher in Q1, with most of the shift taking place in March after combat operations began in the Middle East. The 2-year Treasury yield climbed 41.8 basis points (BPs) in March, marking its biggest monthly move since October 2024 when ongoing strength in economic news had investors reconsidering rate cut expectations. Elon Musk ’s SpaceX pulled back the curtain on a business empire that has racked up ballooning losses and debt after acquiring a cash-hungry startup, and pumping billions of dollars into futuristic endeavors ranging from AI to a Mars rocket. The prospectus that SpaceX filed Wednesday for an IPO of unprecedented size boiled down to a well-worn strategy that entrepreneurs commonly hawk up and down Wall Street: in order to make money, we need to spend money. And nowhere are the outlays larger than in space and artificial intelligence. “The big takeaway for me is that SpaceX is now an AI company,” said Chad Anderson , an early SpaceX investor and founder of Space Capital. Musk is seeking to pull off the unprecedented feat of achieving a $2 trillion valuation from the outset, an audacious plan that’s set to transform both the public and private markets if it succeeds. At the same time, the prospectus lays bare concerns over whether private companies with limited financial disclosures and largely illiquid shares are reaching unjustified valuations in venture capital-led funding rounds. “Investors aren’t paying for today’s business, they’re paying for the platform that owns the next 50 years of orbital infrastructure,” Anderson said. It all started when Paweł Jarczak received a private message from the company on Reddit asking him to delete his code. Now the 3D printing community is lining up behind Jarczak to fund a war against Bambu — and the future of 3D printers could be at stake. Jarczak is a developer who shared a way to let people remote control their Bambu printers without using Bambu software. But Bambu wanted to lock down its system, despite relying on open-source code. That provoked a furious coalition of open-source advocates and YouTubers to respond. “I’ll put up $10,000 to teach bambu labs a lesson,” declared consumer rights advocate Louis Rossmann, pledging to help defend Jarczak in court. “I’m never buying a Bambu Lab 3D printer again,” stated maker Jeff Geerling, adding that he’d gladly chip in too.
