(Bloomberg) -- Samsung Electronics Co. could distribute about 40 trillion won ($26.6 billion) to chip employees as a bonus for this year after the company struck a last-minute deal with labor unions to avert a strike. Most Read from Bloomberg Samsung employs 78,000 people in its semiconductors division. Employees in different divisions will receive varying levels of bonus, but workers will get 513 million won on average, equivalent to $340,000, according to Bloomberg calculations based on proposed terms and estimates for 2026 operating profit. Samsung employees earned an average 158 million won in 2025, according to a company filing in March. Other estimates, including by Yonhap News, calculated that employees in the booming memory division could be in line for individual payouts of around 600 million won. Samsung doesn’t disclose the exact number of employees in different semiconductor divisions. The move follows rival SK Hynix Inc., which last year also agreed a bonus payout. The actual bonus at Samsung will depend heavily on the company’s earnings and chip demand. Samsung declined to comment. Under the tentative deal, which still requires approval by union members, Samsung agreed to distribute 10.5% of profit as a bonus in stock, and a further 1.5% in cash. The new bonus program will continue every year for 10 years, as long as certain profit targets are met. Analysts estimate Samsung’s 2026 operating profit will grow seven-fold to about 333 trillion won. The bonuses highlight the growing strategic importance of semiconductor workers. Samsung and SK Hynix, alongside Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., have become indispensable pillars of the global AI buildout, producing the top-end chips and memory that power data centers from California to the Middle East. In the world’s most populous country, where over 60% survive on free food grain and graduate unemployment is very high , one state is offering cash incentives to fund a baby boom. “It’s an utterly stupid move in every possible examinable way,” said political scientist Devesh Kapur. To be clear, Andhra Pradesh is right to be worried about a graying economy. Like with its neighbors in south India, the state’s fertility rate has long dropped below replacement level and the working-age population is on the decline. In 20 years, the proportion of citizens aged 60 and above is estimated to more than double from 10% to 23% of population . So, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has made a striking pivot. “At one time, I worked towards family planning. But today, children themselves have become wealth,” Naidu said at a public event last week. Earlier this year, he announced a cash payout to families having a second child. Now the state will offer, among other incentives, cash ranging from 30,000 rupees ($300) to 40,000 rupees to families that have a third and fourth child. The money is barely sufficient to cover pre-natal and delivery expenses and may at best stretch to support infant years. The REIT sector outpaced the Dow Jones Industrial Average (+7.2%) but fell short of the double-digit gains from the S&P 500 (+10.5%) and NASDAQ (+15.3%). The market cap weighted Vanguard Real Estate ETF ( VNQ ) fell slightly short of the average REIT in April (+8.60% vs. 8.90%) but has solidly outperformed year-to-date (10.03% vs. +6.31%). The spread between the 2026 FFO multiples of large-cap (17.8x) and small-cap REITs (12.1x) widened in April as multiples expanded 1.5 turns for large caps and 0.8 turns for small caps. Investors currently need to pay an average of 47.1% more for each dollar of FFO from large-cap REITs relative to small-cap REITs.
