200mm Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz and former CEO of PIMCO, said the Iran conflict represents another negative shock to the global economy, with “stagflationary winds” beginning to blow through the U.S. economy. The escalation comes at a particularly delicate time, following a surge in the prices paid index of the ISM report and the highest rise in core goods prices in the PCE since 1992 outside of COVID. In an interview with CNBC, El-Erian explained that the economic fallout will largely depend on how the situation evolves. “The longer it lasts, the more it spreads, the more stagflationary it is for the global economy,” he said, noting that while the global economy has proven “incredibly resilient” after absorbing “shock after shock” in recent years, it should not be tested further. The conflict threatens to fuel inflation and disrupt supply chains at a time when policy flexibility is limited, particularly for the Federal Reserve. El-Erian emphasized the importance of monitoring the duration of the conflict, as prolonged tensions would simultaneously push prices higher and undermine economic growth. The bond market’s initial reaction reflected a shift away from flight-to-safety positioning toward inflation concerns. The 10-year yield ( US10Y ), which had dipped below 4% amid private credit concerns and initial Iran-related uncertainty, climbed 10 basis points following strong ISM data. “I’m more worried about inflation than I am about growth, than I am about flight to quality,” El-Erian observed. Looking ahead, El-Erian projected that the 10-year yield ( US10Y ) will likely trade in a range of 4% to 4.5% unless a significant financial disruption emerges. He identified potential triggers for a breakout from that range as “some combination of the AI bubble and the private credit.” The cumulative effect of repeated economic shocks poses the greatest risk to global stability, El-Erian cautioned. With the Federal Reserve and other policymakers fac...
