Amid the expanding war in Iran – with missiles piercing the skies over the Middle East – pilots’ regimented routes have been thrown into chaos. They’ve been forced to turn planes around mid-flight or squeeze into narrowing air corridors, with hundreds of lives in their hands. “They’ll be seeing more aeroplanes around them than they would have experienced in the past,” Tonkin says of the commercial pilots affected by conflict. If something goes wrong, you have fewer options.” Airspace was closed on Saturday, after the US and Israel launched airstrikes and Iran retaliated with a barrages of missiles across the Middle East. He says that in the early 2000s India once fired missiles in his flight path as he piloted his regular Boeing 747 route from Rome to Singapore. Air traffic controllers warned Tonkin that live missile drills had unexpectedly closed the airspace around the Bay of Bengal, forcing him to recalculate. “The first thing is: Where are we? And how much fuel have we got and where do we need to go?” he says. Tonkin and his first officer, or co-pilot, checked their maps for a nearby airport to land at. Climate breakdown is occurring more rapidly with the heating rate almost doubling, according to research that excludes the effect of natural factors behind the latest scorching temperatures. It found global heating accelerated from a steady rate of less than 0.2C per decade between 1970 and 2015 to about 0.35C per decade over the past 10 years. The rate is higher than scientists have seen since they started systematically taking the Earth’s temperature in 1880. “If the warming rate of the past 10 years continues, it would lead to a long-term exceedance of the 1.5C (2.7F) limit of the Paris agreement before 2030,” said Stefan Rahmstorf, a scientist at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and co-author of the study. Extreme heat in recent years has been pushed higher by natural fluctuations – such as solar cycles, volcanic eruptions, and the weather pattern El Niño – that have led scientists to question whether startling temperature readings are outliers or the result of an increase in global heating. These usually fall into a few different categories. These are the ones that tend to be the most popular from my observation: Covered call/put and option funds, with or without an equity holding component. Business development companies [BDCs]. Limited/Master Limited partnerships and MLP funds. Closed-end funds or mutual funds that distribute capital gains. The assumption that high-yield investors want to live on dividends can also imply that many of their assets are in a taxable brokerage account. Having a taxable brokerage is one of the only ways to retire before the age of 59.5. There are some other options for US based investors, like separating from service at the age of 55 and being able to tap your 401 k. Another would be the IRS rule 72t, allowing one to have access to pre-tax investment accounts through a set schedule of equally periodic payments. These payments usually equate to a roughly 5% portfolio distribution rate if you started at age 50 until full access is granted at age 55 or 59.5, depending on the type of pre-tax account. The calculation for this is quite complex and beyond the scope of this article. For those taking advantage of a taxable account and shooting for 8% on a hypothetical million-dollar account, they could be able to attain about $80,000 a year and strategically be taxed at favorable brackets. City Detect, a company that uses vision AI to help local governments monitor the health of buildings and neighborhoods, announced on Friday a $13 million Series A round led by Prudence Venture Capital. The startup launched in 2021, and Gavin Baum-Blake, the remaining co-founder, serves as CEO. He said the company was founded in part because cities were struggling to deal with “urban blight and decay.” The idea was to use advanced computer vision and AI technology to help cities track and fix such problems. City Detect mounts cameras on public vehicles like garbage trucks and street sweepers, captures photos of surrounding buildings as those vehicles pass, then uses computer vision to analyze the images. It’s essentially a Google Maps Street View, but focused on ensuring buildings are up to code. “The problems could be graffiti, illegal dumping, litter that’s on the side of the road,” Baum-Blake told TechCrunch. Then, City Detect works with local governments to fix the issues, a process that usually involves local officials sending a crew out to clean everything up. Right now, tracking dilapidated buildings is very manual, so Baum-Blake considers his competition to be the “status quo.” “They’re able to do 50 per week,” he said of humans tasked with keeping track of decaying buildings, “whereas we’re able to do thousands per week.” The product, which Baum-Blake has patented, has some fun and essential features. Adriaan de Jongh and Sylvain Tegroeg did not necessarily set out to create a new genre. But, in some ways, that’s exactly what the duo did when they released Hidden Folks in 2017. Hidden object games have been around for decades — they’ve existed well before computers, when people searched for objects in paintings and printed drawings — but Hidden Folks was a distinct step forward. De Jongh calls Hidden Folks a “searching” game; objects are certainly hidden, but the game is more than just spotting objects. “We wanted to make a very playful, interactive game where our focus was invoking this curiosity for these little worlds and the little stories that unfolded,” de Jongh, who intends to expand the Hidden Folks universe in a new collaboration with Tegroeg, told The Verge. “That was always the vision for the game, and all design decisions we made tried to cater to that sense of exploration.” In the years that followed the game’s release, dozens of Hidden Folks-likes were created. Some of them are clones that copy the art style and even assets in a way that makes de Jongh uncomfortable. Colombia is at risk of being seduced by populists espousing radical and extreme policies, according to presidential candidate Roy Barreras. Barreras, an ally of President Gustavo Petro competing in the center-left coalition primaries on Sunday, called for a progressive government that is also friendly to investors. “If I win the primary, the markets will know there is a possibility of trust and a stable government,” Barreras said in an interview in Bloomberg’s Bogota office. “If I lose, we are condemned to right-wing populism and left-wing populism, because there are only populists.” Colombians will vote March 8 to select some of the candidates who will compete in first round of the presidential election. They are vying for backing from a group of parties to compete against leftist senator Iván Cepeda , who is leading in polls, and conservative lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella , who is in second place. Cepeda has called for the redistribution of wealth and giving land to poor farmers, while de la Espriella argues for hardline security policies and the “neutralization” of criminals who refuse to surrender. Neither responded to interview requests. Barreras, 62, a physician who has served as head of Congress and as Colombia’s ambassador to the UK, said he expects to secure 3 million votes in the primary, where he is competing against former Medellín mayor Daniel Quintero . That would give him momentum and the legitimacy to unite the left and the center in a broad coalition, he said. However, one recent poll showed Quintero ahead.
