U.S. equities have retreated from recent highs as rising oil prices, higher Treasury yields, and geopolitical tensions weigh on valuations, even as the earnings outlook remains resilient, according to a Goldman Sachs note. The S&P 500 has fallen roughly 9% from its January peak, with its forward price-to-earnings ratio declining to 19 times from 21 times a month ago. The compression in multiples has come despite a rise in 2026 earnings estimates, suggesting markets are adjusting to tighter financial conditions rather than a deterioration in corporate fundamentals. Investor positioning has also turned more cautious, with Goldman’s U.S. equity sentiment indicator falling to -0.9, its lowest level since August 2025. While such levels have historically pointed to stronger forward returns, analysts said a sustained rebound would likely require clearer improvement in the macro outlook. “The S&P 500 index is down 9.2% from its recent highs, and the P/E ratio is down 18%. That 9 percentage point difference can be explained by an earnings cycle that is not only holding up but accelerating higher,” said Fidelity’s Jurrien Timmer. The quote was posted by Bloomberg's Lisa Abramowicz on X. Goldman expects S&P 500 earnings per share to grow 12% in 2026, supported by artificial intelligence investment, though risks from prolonged energy shocks remain. Attention now turns to the first-quarter earnings season, where guidance on margins and input costs will be closely watched. Starbucks ( SBUX ) disclosed results of its annual meeting held on March 25. The company's shareholders elected each of the eleven directors nominated by the board to serve until the 2027 annual meeting. Marissa Mayer was the board member with the highest percentage of “for” votes. The shareholders also approved a shareholder proposal requesting supermajority shareholder voting requirements be replaced with majority voting requirements. Among the items shareholders did not approve were a proposal requesting adoption of an independent board chair policy, a proposal requesting a report on the company's apparent exclusion of detransitioning in its healthcare coverage, a proposal requesting a report on median compensation and benefits gaps as they address reproductive and gender dysphoria care, and a shareholder proposal requesting a report on the company's use of diagnostic tools created by politicized corporate partners. Shareholders also did not approve a shareholder proposal requesting a report on the risks of the Company excluding religious charities from its employee-gift match program. At the annual meeting, CEO Brian Niccol highlighted a series of proof points that he said demonstrated that Starbucks ( SBUX ) is ahead of schedule in its turnaround and delivering stronger, more consistent experiences for customers and partners. "Today, you can feel the difference," he stated. "The shine is back on Starbucks, and the momentum we’ve built is showing up in the experience our customers have every day," he added. Regarding the coffeehouse experience, uplifts were said to be restoring warmth and comfort across coffeehouses, with more than 1,000 expected to be completed by the end of fiscal 2026.
