I had my first panic attack on New Year’s Day 2022. In the months that followed I experienced more of these episodes and increasingly craved serenity. Woodworking emerged in my mind as a place I might get some reprieve from the new psychological maze I was stumbling through after a traumatic event changed how I experienced the world. The call of the timber was undeniable. I landed on the Victorian Woodworkers Association in North Melbourne for its price, emphasis on craft and the pedigree of its tutors. Here I was able to take an open class that let me make whatever I wanted from day one. When I entered the basement workshop for my first class I was expecting monastic peace, slow craft, soft timber grain and the wisdom of ancients. View image in fullscreen ‘I’ve noticed my tutors’ oversight relax with my developing proficiency.’ Photograph: Asanka Brendon Ratnayake/The Guardian Instead, a multi-year hazing ritual awaited my frayed nerves: limb-severing machinery, loud noises, amateur’s embarrassment, compromises and mistakes. My first class began with a workshop tour and mapping out my first project on a large, thin, MDF panel – the first of three cabinets to house my record collection, turntables and DJ mixer. I wanted to avoid power tools and pictured dove-tailing my way to recovery – that is, creating joints that don’t require screws. My new master, Isabel Avendaño-Hazbún, a hilarious sculptor and textile artist, was willing to show me but convinced me otherwise – people practise dovetailing for 20 years, she cautioned, jokingly, and mine was not going to look like that. I had to set my aspirations aside – power tools were the only way to go. View image in fullscreen ‘In three years I’ve completed just two of my three cabinets.’ Photograph: Nick Buckley I quickly learned it’s always best to listen to Isabel if I want my body to look the same exiting the workshop as when I enter. When she yells “Buckley, what are you doing?!” from across the machine room, it’s to ...

Broadcom, Cisco, MACOM, NVIDIA, and Semtech join forces to accelerate industry specification of 400 Gbps optical LOS ANGELES, March 16, 2026--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A group of industry-leading networking, semiconductor, and optics companies today announced the formation of the 400G Optical MSA (400 Gbps Optical Multi-Source Agreement) to develop the specifications for optical interfaces required to enable a broad ecosystem of interoperable solutions. Under the MSA, participating companies will address the technical challenges of achieving optical interfaces utilizing 400G optical technology to ensure optical interoperability for transceivers and interfaces produced by different manufacturers and in various form factors. These new optical specifications target the next generation of AI Infrastructure equipment that is required to address the industry’s ever-growing need for increased bandwidth. The 400G Optical MSA Group founding members include Broadcom, Cisco, MACOM, NVIDIA, and Semtech. The initial goal of the MSA is to develop specifications for single-wavelength optical links operating at 400G at reaches up to 500m. The specifications will aim to leverage the latest link training and maintenance concepts to improve the performance and reliability of the links. The new interfaces defined by the 400G Optical MSA will double the speed per wavelength for 400G, 800G, and 1.6 Tbps Ethernet applications. This effort is intended to complement the work currently taking place in other industry bodies such as the IEEE 802.3. By focusing on 400G per wavelengths, the 400G Optical MSA will be able to provide link level specifications for next-generation AI Infrastructure equipment. "The rapid build out of AI infrastructure requires 400G optical links to support high-radix applications within the backend networks," said Vasu Parthasarathy, 400G Optical MSA co-chair. "By forming this MSA group, we can ensure these specifications are defined ahead of market timing requirements, ensuri...

Spending on data center projects in the US has exploded, surpassing offices for the first time at the end of last year. It’s a trend Matt Kunz saw early on when Meta Platforms Inc. built a computing hub outside Columbus, Ohio. Other tech companies soon swarmed into the area, drawn by its stable economy, university talent pipeline and ample power, water and land, said Kunz, vice president and general manager at Turner Construction Co. , the firm that led Meta’s build-out. Since Meta broke ground in 2017, it’s expanded its data center campus, and Amazon.com Inc. , Alphabet Inc. ’s Google and Microsoft Corp. made plans to join it nearby. “When one shows up, almost all the other ones tend to follow,” Kunz said. For Turner, a construction giant responsible for supertall office skyscrapers, sports stadiums and cultural venues around the globe, data centers are commanding more of its bandwidth. The company completed $9.4 billion of the projects last year, more than five times its 2020 total. Last month, Turner announced it was chosen as one of the contractors on a $10 billion data center for Meta in Indiana. Tech companies’ needs for AI processing facilities have made data centers the latest darling of the real estate industry. The properties are figuring heavily into portfolios of major investors such as Blackstone Inc. , Brookfield Asset Management Ltd. and KKR & Co. , on a bet that long-term demand for computing power will continue to grow. At the same time, office development has slowed as cities across the US contend with vacancies that have piled up since the Covid lockdowns. Construction spending for data centers has climbed steadily in recent years, while outlays for general office projects headed downward, US Census data show. The two crossed paths in December, with roughly $3.57 billion spent on data centers that month, compared with $3.49 billion for offices, according to preliminary estimates. The shift is likely to continue and “may perpetuate itself even furt...

stockcam/iStock Unreleased via Getty Images Investment Thesis I believe that Reddit Inc. ( RDDT ) is significantly mispriced, as it is still being treated like a speculative social media company, but it’s already generating ~$684 million in free cash flow with ~91% gross margins, improving profitability rapidly. Additionally, the decrease in stock-based compensation and the announcement of the $1 billion buyback are signs of better capital allocation. I think the market is missing two things, first the upside potential of ARPU expansion with the ad platform and the value of the human conversation dataset for AI licensing. If Reddit is successful with monetization, reaching $6-8 billion in revenue over the decade, the current valuation does not reflect the company’s long-term earning potential. Reddit’s Monetization Gap: The Billion-Dollar Opportunity At times, the opportunities in the stock market can be right in front of us, and yet we fail to notice them. The opportunities in the case of Reddit can be as simple as the idea that its monetization will catch up with its engagement in the coming years. First off, Reddit is one of the most visited platforms in the world, and its user base comprises millions of users daily as they come to the platform to carry out various activities such as researching different products, solving various issues, and carrying out various discussions among themselves. The revenue reported a 70% year-over-year increase, and ARPU stands at just $5.98 globally , compared to the $40+ that Meta Platforms generates. This means that Reddit currently earns just 1/7 of the revenue that Meta Platforms generates. Q4 Letter to shareholders The potential of this is already seen in the US market with an ARPU of $10.79 meaning that when targeting tools and advertisement infrastructure are more developed, advertisers are willing to pay. I see the potential is much higher outside of the US, however, with an ARPU of only $2.31. This means that outside of t...

BYD Shares Soar Most In 13 Months As Chinese EV Push Into Americas Accelerates Shares of Chinese EV maker BYD surged the most in 13 months after a report that its factory in Bahia, Brazil, a former Ford Motor plant, secured export orders for about 100,000 vehicles from Argentina and Mexico. This development suggests BYD's strategy to localize production in South America is still in its early stages and set to flood the continent with Chinese EVs. Bloomberg quoted Macquarie Capital analyst Eugene Hsiao, who said the local Chinese media report about BYD's Brazil factory receiving large orders from Argentina and Mexico suggests that "this is positive for the broader BYD thesis, which is that overseas sales will become the core growth and profit driver over time." Brazil is BYD's largest market outside China. The factory in Bahia is critical to the Chinese company's overseas expansion plans in the Americas. The plant has a capacity to make 150,000 EVs per year. In BYD's home market of China, overall sales for the first two months of the year slumped 36% to 400,241 units. Competition in China has intensified as rivalry among domestic brands grows fiercer. However, exports have gained solid traction, with the company now planning to sell 1.3 million cars abroad. "A higher gas price would potentially drive demand in the European market, which would benefit Chinese automakers that export to that market such as BYD," Morningstar analyst Vincent Sun said, adding, "For Chinese market, gas bill is not as big a driver to EV demand as in overseas market." BYD shares in Hong Kong surged 8% on Monday, marking the largest gain in 13 months, as news of overseas expansion lifted investor sentiment. The stock was a top performer on the Hang Seng Tech Index, with trading volume doubling to 35.7 million shares. Peers including Nio and Xiaomi climbed more than 5%. It was less than three years ago that hydrogen fuel cell company Plug Power (PLUG +3.72%) warned its cash might not be sufficient to fund its operations. It resulted in a crippling performance in 2023 as the company's shares plummeted by 64%. And they would go on to lose another 53% the following year. In 2025, they also declined, but at a more modest rate of just under 8%. The company has been doing better, and given its beaten-down valuation, there's been some room for it to climb. Thus far in 2026, shares of Plug Power are up by 9%, and it's coming off some solid fourth-quarter results. But is the cash flow risk surrounding the business gone, and can this make for a safe long-term investment? The company remains deeply unprofitable Plug Power may possess a lot of potential in the long term, but simply getting there may not be easy. Last year, the hydrogen company incurred an operating loss of $1.5 billion. And while that's technically an improvement from its loss of more than $2 billion in the previous year, it's still a deeply concerning result. Meanwhile, it has also continued to burn through a lot of cash. In 2025, it used up $535.8 million from its day-to-day operating activities. That is also an improvement from a year ago, when it used up $728.6 million. The key thing to consider, however, is how significant the cash burn is in relation to its overall cash position. As of the end of the year, the company's cash position totaled $555.3 million, which includes its restricted cash. That's not much of a buffer for the business if it continues going at that rate, and it heightens the risk of offerings and share dilution in the near future.
