Over the first two months of 2026, China’s aggregate financing painted a picture of a two-speed economy. On one hand, government and corporate borrowing are accelerating. On the other, the Chinese household sector is in full retreat. Beijing has continued to deploy fiscal support, front-loading 2.4 trillion yuan ($348 billion) in government financing in the first two months — roughly 17% of the annual budget, keeping pace with previous targets. Meanwhile, corporate financing has rebounded to an annualized run rate of 18.5 trillion yuan. As producer prices (PPI) rise, real corporate borrowing costs have dropped below 5% and are expected to dip closer to 4%. Driven by this favorable environment, corporate credit expansion will likely continue its upward trajectory.

US diesel rose above $5 a gallon for the first time since December 2022 as the war in Iran continued to disrupt supplies, placing further pressure on broad swaths of the world’s largest economy. The nationwide average retail price reached $5.044 a gallon on Monday, according to the American Automobile Association, rising sharply when the conflict began. The war has all but cut off supplies of fuels, crude oil, natural gas and fertilizer from the Persian Gulf as the Strait of Hormuz remains effectively closed to shipping. Diesel is the lifeblood of the US freight, agriculture and construction industries, and any spike in retail prices will ripple through the broader economy. Prices have surged faster than most other petroleum-based products because Persian Gulf refineries are major suppliers of the fuel. In some US states, diesel prices had already surpassed the $5 mark. Prices for residential heating oil, which is effectively interchangeable with diesel, have also climbed above $5 , according to the US Energy Information Administration. For US President Donald Trump , a prolonged surge in fuel prices could weigh on midterm election prospects later this year.

“Give me a sleeping bag and I’ll happily sleep here overnight,” says Kim Mackintosh as she wanders amid the vibrant flora of the Mediterranean biome at the Eden Project on the eve of the tourist attraction’s 25th anniversary. Loupe in hand, the leader of the biome’s horticulture team is marvelling at an array of plants that have recently come into bloom, tenderly examining the yellow furry buds of an Acacia glaucoptera before flogging a Grevillea flower to dispense its rich, honey-flavoured nectar. “Now look at this showoff,” she says, proudly removing the cap from a budding Eucalyptus caesia to reveal the dazzling flower within. “She’s got her pink tutu on! And look at those stamens. How crazy is it?” View image in fullscreen Kim Mackintosh inspects the ‘kangaroo paw’ of an Anigozanthos through her loupe. They were brought to Eden from Portugal, where they were deemed unproductive, and the most senior of them is thought to be up to 1,500 years old. “We don’t know exactly how old they are and obviously we’re not going go cut the trunks to count the rings, but two of them are so old that the crowns have hollowed out and rotted,” she explains. “We prune them each year and when I’m doing it I’m very aware that I’m one of an incredibly long line of horticulturalists going back to Roman times who’ve attended to these plants. It’s utterly awesome.” View image in fullscreen Kim Mackintosh looks in awe at an olive tree thought to be 1,500 years old The brainchild of Tim Smit, a Dutch entrepreneur who wanted to reconnect peop...

Snappily named Xi-cc-plus, Cern physicists spotted the particle in shower of debris that lit up Large Hadron Collider Scientists at the Cern nuclear physics laboratory near Geneva have discovered a heavier version of the proton, the subatomic particle that sits at the heart of every known atom in the universe. They spotted the particle in a shower of debris that lit up a detector at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), located deep beneath the ground at Cern, which smashes protons together at close to the speed of light. The collisions recreate in microcosm conditions that prevailed just after the big bang, with the energy converting to particles that spray in all directions. The newfound particle, which is four times heavier than the regular proton, should help physicists refine their understanding of the strong nuclear force that glues together the innards of all atomic nuclei. The force is unusual because it behaves like a rubber band, getting stronger as the distance between subatomic particles increases. Continue reading...

According to Micron, the Tongluo site will complement its existing operations in Taiwan and serve as an extension of the company’s manufacturing campus in Taichung, located about 15 miles away. The deal was first announced back in January this year. The site includes roughly 300,000 square feet of existing 300mm cleanroom space. Micron says the facility will support efforts to expand supply of advanced DRAM products, including high-bandwidth memory (HBM), as demand from AI-related applications grows. Micron began preparations for the site following the announcement of the deal earlier this year. With the transaction now completed, the company plans to begin retrofitting the existing cleanroom in March. The facility is expected to contribute meaningful product shipments starting in fiscal 2028. The company is also planning further expansion at the location. Construction of a second facility of similar size is scheduled to begin by the end of fiscal 2026, which would add approximately 270,000 square feet of additional cleanroom space.

Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. All the smart home news, reviews, and gadgets you need to know about The first Matter camera is here — sort of. Camera support came to the smart home standard last year, and Aqara’s Camera Hub G350 is the first to support it. The G350, which was announced at CES, launched this week and is a pan-and-tilt indoor security camera with up to 4K video resolution. Today, the G350 only supports Matter on Samsung SmartThings, as none of the other platforms have added Matter 1.5 yet. I’ve only had the camera setup for a day, and it took several firmware updates before I could connect it as a Matter camera. So far, all it can do is stream a live feed, which is far less than what Samsung promises Matter cameras in SmartThings will do. But there’s plenty of potential here. The G350 has impressive specs for an indoor camera. It boasts dual-lenses — a 4K wide-angle lens and a 2.5K telephoto lens — and up to 9x hybrid zoom. A compact pan-tilt mechanism provides 360-degree coverage with auto-tracking for people and pets, and a physical lens shutter activates when the camera is turned off. Along with Matter, the Aqara G350 supports Apple’s HomeKit Secure Video service and can connect to Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and other platforms via the cloud. You can also store footage locally on a microSD card, and RTSP support enables streaming video to platforms like Home Assistant and NVRs. Aqara offers its own cloud storage service, which is end-to-end encrypted. The Aqara G350 works with Matter, but currently, only Samsung SmartThings supports Matter cameras. While the G350 worked perfectly in the Aqara app, my Matter experience with it was less so. My first attempts to onboard the camera directly to SmartThings by scanning ...

Tesla and LG Energy will jointly build a battery plant in Michigan that will cost $4.3 billion. Production is slated to begin next year, the Department of the Interior said in a statement. The facility will have an annual capacity of 50 GWh. “American-made cells will power Tesla's Megapack 3 energy storage systems produced in Houston, creating a robust domestic battery supply chain,” the statement also said. Bloomberg last year reported the deal was in the making, citing sources as saying the batteries to be built at the facility will be used in energy storage installations rather than electric vehicles. The batteries will use lithium iron phosphate technology, which is dominated by Chinese companies. LG Energy is one of the few non-Chinese manufacturers using the technology. The initial news reports about the battery plant last July came less than a week after LG Energy warned about slowing EV battery demand because of the tariffs that President Trump was imposing on trade partners around the world. The company also named the Trump administration’s phaseout of EV subsidies as a factor that will drive lower demand for batteries over the short term. “U.S. tariffs and an early end to EV subsidies will put a burden on automakers, potentially leading to vehicle price increases and a slowdown in EV growth in North America,” the company’s CFO, Lee Chang-sil, said during a conference call on LG Energy’s second-quarter financial results, as quoted by Reuters in late July 2025. Indeed, the phaseout of EV subsidies in the United States led to a slump in EV sales. The latest data shows that in January, new EV registrations in the country dropped by 41%, pushing EVs’ market share down from 8.3% in January 2025 to 5.1% this year, InsideEVs reported. The Michigan plant that LG Energy and Tesla will build was originally planned to produce EV batteries. Europe’s power market is facing its first serious geopolitical stress test since the 2022 energy crisis — and, so far, it’s holding up. German and French prices have been much more resilient than natural gas to the turmoil caused by the war in the Middle East, declining last week despite a surge in oil. High energy prices four years ago caused a deep inflationary shock that lasted years, but this time the continued investment in solar panels and wind turbines is helping to blunt any major price shocks. Contracts remain a fraction of the levels seen after Russia cut pipeline flows in the last crisis, when power costs spiraled and forced governments into emergency interventions. This time, the system looks better prepared. “The electricity market is significantly more diversified than the oil market and can therefore better withstand a supply constraint of oil or gas,” said Morgane Trieu Cuot , Alpiq Holding AG’s interim trading head. Higher oil and gas prices are adding to inflationary pressure, with the EU warning its measure could exceed 3% this year if the war in the Middle East drags on. Electricity prices, however, remain far lower than they were four years ago, a buffer that could help limit the need for further rate hikes. At the height of the last energy crisis, cuts to Russian pipeline supplies culminated in the Nord Stream explosions in September 2022 and sent gas prices to record levels just as peak demand was approaching. Now, solar output is beginning its seasonal ramp-up after the winter lull, while a boom in new installations is steadily increasing its share of the grid. “What we’re seeing now is the energy transition in motion,” said Jorge Martinez, chief growth officer at renewable energy producer Nadara. “Even as gas prices jump in response to geopolitical tensions, Europe’s growing solar and renewable capacity is helping cushion the blow.” Wind generation is also rebounding after a long period of below-normal output. In addition, France’s nuclear f...
