PM Images/DigitalVision via Getty Images 2025 Stock Market Overview 2025 was a year of volatility and uncertainty for the market. There was a new (old) US President, the implementation of expanded worldwide tariffs, multiple US natural disasters, concerns about inflation, interest rate cuts, and ongoing wars. Despite all of that, the market continued its upward march, driven by excitement about the AI revolution and the prospect of further interest rate cuts. That's not to say it was an easy year for investors. The markets experienced a significant decline in the first quarter, with the Nasdaq Composite (IXIC) dropping by more than 15% before recovering to finish the year with a 20.36% gain. Data by YCharts The S&P 500 ( SPX ) at +16.39% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average ( DJI ) at +12.97% also produced excellent returns for investors. Portfolio Performance The DGI for the DIY portfolio also had a successful 2025, posting a 10.74% gain for the year. While a double-digit gain is always welcome, the number lags all three major indices. This underperformance was caused by a heavier weighting in industrials, energy, consumer staples, and health care. The biggest laggard in 2025 was UnitedHealth Group ( UNH ), which saw a decline of nearly 35%. Data by YCharts Other big declines came from Watsco, Inc. ( WSO ) at -28.90%, Hormel Foods ( HRL ) at -24.45%, Lennox International ( LII ) at -20.31%, and EOG Resources at -14.33%. Despite those big losses, the portfolio still produced double-digit returns, which were driven by gains from biotech, AI-related companies, and a smattering of companies from other sectors. The biggest gainer was Dollar General ( DG ), which saw a 75% increase after three consecutive years of losses. However, the biggest impact came from Broadcom ( AVGO ), which grew by 49.28% and now commands a 12.53% weighting in the portfolio. Data by YCharts Other companies that produced 25%+ gains included AbbVie, Inc ( ABBV ) at +28.28%, Amgen, Inc. ( AMGN ) a...

Benjamin Fanjoy/Getty Images News Nvidia's ( NVDA ) new offerings could help cement its position in inference, said Wall Street analysts, after the company held its annual tech event GTC, highlighting products and partnerships. Bernstein kept its Outperform rating and $300 price target on Nvidia's stock. "We liked what we heard...NVIDIA’s roadmap looks really solid, their capability gap continues to widen, new offerings ought to help cement their position in inference just as they dominate training, and the order book suggests further upside to numbers, with the stock (in our opinion) almost absurdly valued given their positioning (trading ~15x our CY26/FY27 EPS). We would be buyers," said analysts led by Stacy Rasgon. AI inference is the process where a trained AI model applies its learned patterns to new data to make predictions, generate content, or make decisions. On Monday, Nvidia ( NVDA ) made several announcements at GTC, including a $1T revenue opportunity through 2027, a partnership with OpenClaw, Groq 3 Language Processing Unit, or LPU, integration with Vera Rubin, and product offerings. The analysts said that Nvidia's CFO Colette Kress confirmed to them that the $1T number includes only Blackwell and Rubin and associated networking. It does not include any otherproducts such as Groq LPUs, CPX, CPU racks, among other things. "Hence, we suspect data center will come in well above this $1T target, and well above expectations (and we note that the ~ $500B implied in the new CY27 forecast already exceeds consensus ~$438B)," said Rasgon and his team. The analysts noted that Nvidia's full platform approach appears difficult to disrupt as it relentlessly builds out its software and hardware stacks across multiple offerings, including graphics processing units, or GPUs, central processing units, or CPUs, data processing units, or DPUs, and now LPUs, networking, and storage. The company continues to drive token costs down by orders of magnitude with every generatio...

Samsung is nothing if not consistent. Just as it has for many years, the company is starting the year with a new generation of Galaxy S phones. Rumors about remixing the lineup did not pan out, so there are still three versions of the phone—the Galaxy S26, S26 Plus, and S26 Ultra . It's the Ultra, with its whopping $1,300 price tag, that makes up the largest chunk of Samsung flagship sales, even though you can get a perfectly serviceable smartphone for a third of the price. The S26 Ultra serves a different market than a budget phone, though. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is big, powerful, and overflowing with features. It can be a bit too much at times, particularly if you don't care for mobile AI. It's expensive, but you get long support and just about everything you could want from a smartphone in 2026. Still, with other smartphone makers scaling back amid skyrocketing component prices , the S26 Ultra may end up looking like a good value in hindsight. Read full article Comments

There's an old saying on Wall Street about insider buying: there are many possible reasons to sell a stock, but only one reason to buy. Back on March 12, Investar Holding Corp's Director, Robert Chris Jordan, invested $41,617.50 into 1,550 shares of ISTR, for a cost per share of $26.85. Bargain hunters tend to pay particular attention to insider buys like this one, because presumably the only reason an insider would take their hard-earned cash and use it to buy stock of their company in the open market, is that they expect to make money. In trading on Tuesday, bargain hunters could buy shares of Investar Holding Corp (Symbol: ISTR) and achieve a cost basis even cheaper than Jordan, with shares changing hands as low as $26.75 per share. Investar Holding Corp shares are currently trading up about 0.9% on the day. The chart below shows the one year performance of ISTR shares, versus its 200 day moving average: Looking at the chart above, ISTR's low point in its 52 week range is $15.39 per share, with $30.49 as the 52 week high point — that compares with a last trade of $27.65.

Twice on Monday, US President Donald Trump said he had wrangled a confession of sorts from an Oval Office predecessor who he said had expressed regret in a private conversation about not attacking Iran the way Trump has been doing for more than two weeks. But there’s just a little problem: representatives for the four living former presidents – three Democrats and one Republican – said none had been in touch with Trump recently. Trump declined to name the former president when reporters asked who it was, saying he didn’t want to “embarrass him”. March E-mini S&P futures (ESH26) are up +0.73%, and March E-mini Nasdaq futures (NQH26) are up +0.84%. Stocks are higher today as bond yields fell on signs of a slowdown in the US labor market. The 10-year T-note yield is down -1 bp to 4.20% after the ADP weekly employment change for the four weeks ended February 28 increased by +9,000, the smallest increase in five weeks, and a sign of a slowdown in hiring by US employers. Stocks are being undercut today as crude oil prices rose after Iran renewed attacks on key energy infrastructure in the Middle East. WTI crude oil (CLJ26) is up more than +1% today after operations were suspended at the Shah gas field in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), while Iranian drones and missiles also targeted an Iraqi oil field. Also, crude loadings from the UAE’s port at Fujairah were halted again after Iranian drone attacks. The war with Iran is in its eighteenth day with no end in sight. Late Monday, President Trump said he will delay his summit later this month with Chinese President Xi Jinping in China until next month, saying it was important for him to remain in Washington to oversee the military operations against Iran. Meanwhile, Mr. Trump renewed calls for other nations to help secure the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to expand strikes to Iranian oil infrastructure if Iran keeps up attacks on other Persian Gulf energy producers. Crude oil prices remain high despite attempts to boost global supplies. The IEA last Wednesday released 400 million barrels from emergency oil stockpiles and said the war against Iran is disrupting 7.5% of global oil supply, and the conflict will cut global oil supply by 8 million bpd this month. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world’s oil and natural gas flows, has choked off oil and gas flows due to ...

imaginima/E+ via Getty Images Oil prices ( CO1:COM ), ( CL1:COM ) exceeding $125 per barrel would represent a fundamental shift in the global economic outlook, forcing markets to dramatically constrain demand to match reduced supply, according to Morgan Stanley’s global chief economist Seth Carpenter. In an interview with CNBC, Carpenter warned that while current prices around $100 are manageable, sustained levels of $125 to $135 would change the entire economic calculus. “If we’re past $125-$130, $135, I think the script really is starting to shift,” he said. Carpenter outlined three potential scenarios for oil markets amid ongoing disruption in the Strait of Hormuz: a quick return to $65-70 per barrel, a prolonged period at $100, or a spike to $125-140. He emphasized that economists have limited ability to forecast prices during geopolitical crises and urged thinking in terms of scenarios rather than single predictions, citing Ben Bernanke’s advice to the Bank of England. For the U.S. specifically, oil ( CO1:COM ) remaining around $100 per barrel would be challenging but survivable. “The U.S. has become less oil dependent over the past several decades. The U.S. is a net energy exporter,” Carpenter noted, adding that $100 oil is “not great, but it’s probably not a disaster” for the country. However, he cautioned that higher gasoline prices would particularly hurt lower-income consumers and push up headline inflation. Beyond oil prices, Carpenter warned that the crisis could evolve into a broader supply chain disruption affecting essential commodities like helium and fertilizer that transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Drawing on lessons from the COVID pandemic, he noted that supply chain problems create “nonlinearities that pop up where you least expect them.” Fertilizer shortages could cascade through agricultural systems differently depending on crop types and planting cycles worldwide. The most critical distinction Carpenter emphasized is between goods becoming...

By Kanishka Singh Reuters March 17, 2026, 10:15 a.m. ET The U.S. government on Monday said electric vehicle maker Tesla and South Korea's LG Energy Solution had signed a supply agreement to build a $4.3 billion lithium iron phosphate (LFP) prismatic battery cell manufacturing facility in Lansing, with an expected production launch in 2027. "American-made cells will power Tesla's Megapack 3 energy storage systems produced in Houston, creating a robust domestic battery supply chain," the U.S. Department of the Interior said in a statement on Monday. The agreement was part of a broader statement on deals highlighted by President Donald Trump's administration from the Indo-Pacific Energy Security Summit. A source told Reuters in July that LG Energy Solution had signed a $4.3 billion deal to supply Tesla with energy storage system batteries as the U.S. company looked to reduce its reliance on Chinese imports due to tariffs. At the time, the South Korean company said it had signed a $4.3 billion contract to supply LFP batteries over three years globally, without identifying the customer or saying if they would be used in vehicles or energy-storage systems. LG Energy Solution is one of the few producers of LFP batteries in the U.S. The LFP battery chemistry has long been dominated by Chinese rivals that have little presence in the U.S. market.
