In recent weeks, geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have pushed Brent crude back above $100 per barrel and triggered sharp moves across oil, gas and refined products markets. The catalyst is simple but profound: a disruption of flows through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical arteries for the global energy trade. Roughly 20 million barrels of oil per day pass through the Strait of Hormuz, representing a significant share of global supply. When that flow is threatened—even partially—the consequences ripple quickly across markets. How resilient is the global energy system to such a shock? And what would it take to stabilize prices? To understand these dynamics, we spoke with Aldo Spanjer, Global Head of Energy Strategy at BNP Paribas, who provided a detailed breakdown of what is happening beneath the surface of the oil market. The Scale of the Oil Supply Disruption At first glance, there appear to be several potential offsets to mitigate supply disruptions: strategic petroleum reserves, alternative pipeline routes and sanctioned barrels waiting for buyers. Yet when placed alongside the scale of lost flows, the available alternatives appear relatively modest. “There are a few offsets, but they are not going to get you close to the 20 million barrels per day you’re effectively losing,” Aldo explained. “It’s a patch—not a solution.” The International Energy Agency’s strategic reserve release is the most immediate response. A planned release of around 400 million barrels sounds significant, but the math quickly reveals its limitation. At current disruption levels, that volume would only cover around 20 days of lost flows. Even more importantly, strategic reserves can only be released at a limited daily rate. Historically, drawdowns have averaged around 1–1.5 million barrels per day, meaning they can replace only a fr...

GE Aerospace (GE 0.37%), one of the largest U.S. industrial companies, has seen its shares fall by more than 4% so far in March. That slump came despite the megacap delivering a strong fourth-quarter report. Revenue and earnings per share (EPS) rose by 18.9% and 32%, respectively. When the company announced earnings on the morning of Jan. 22, the stock actually fell by 3.6% from opening to closing. What gives? Well, some of that had to do with profit-taking by investors using the news to unload the stock, which some saw as being overpriced after a run-up of more than 57% over the prior year. More recently, the steep rise in oil prices is turning investors against GE Aerospace because its main customers -- airlines -- will be adversely affected by higher fuel costs. The thinking is that high fuel costs will lead to deferred maintenance by airlines or a slowdown in new aircraft orders. While rising fuel costs can hurt just about any company, at least two megacap industrial stocks have so far shrugged off the fuel concerns: Caterpillar (CAT 1.25%) and Honeywell International (HON 0.61%). Shabbir Jasdanwala/iStock via Getty Images Kinross Gold: A Pullback Worth Buying Data by YCharts I haven't covered Kinross Gold ( KGC ) in a while (about three years ago , in fact). The company went through a rough stretch a few years back with the Russian asset sale and a stock price that couldn't get traction. But the Kinross that exists today is fundamentally different from the one that existed then. Paul Rollinson and his team have quietly built one of the more compelling gold miners in the sector, and I think that a 20% pullback from January's $39 high gives us a reason to take a closer look. Kinross is producing 2 million ounces a year across six mines in the United States, Brazil, Mauritania, Chile, and Canada. At spot gold prices, 2026 AISC guidance of $1,730/oz implies margins north of $3,000 per ounce on that production base. And the stock trades at under 10x forward earnings , as of writing on March 18. I'm not going to call this a hidden gem or a super-undervalued gold mining stock. But I do think it's undervalued relative to its asset quality and growth pipeline, and I would buy the stock under $30, as I explain below. Kinross Gold: What Happened in 2025 Kinross Gold The FY 2025 numbers were excellent. We saw this senior gold miner produce record free cash flow ($2.5 billion), a 37% jump in revenue ($7.05 billion), and adjusted earnings per share of $1.84, more than double 2024's result. Q4 margins hit $2,847 per ounce sold, outpacing the gold price increase. Kinross also wisely reduced its net leverage as it repaid $700 million in debt; it returned cash to shareholders, too, by buying back $600 million in shares, and has increased the dividend 33% cumulatively since Q3 2025 (while still ending the year with $1.74 billion in cash). The balance sheet swung from $2.2 billion in net debt at year-end 2022 to $1 billion in net cash, a $3.2 billion turnaround in three years. Kinross has one of the lowest AISC guidances in the sector. Following attacks by Iran on energy facilities in the Middle East, including the crucial South Pars gas field, Brent crude futures surged above $119.00 a barrel earlier in the day, and despite dropping a bit to $114.50, remains high up (nearly 6.5%) over previous close. A hawkish tone by Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is hurting as well. After leaving interest rates unchanged, Powell said in his post-meeting press conference on Wednesday that the U.S. is seeing "some progress on inflation" but "not as much as we had hoped." Powell warned that "you won't see the rate cut" if there isn't further progress on inflation because of the broader uncertainty linked to the Middle East conflict and President Trump's tariffs. Meanwhile, investors are awaiting the Bank of England's monetary policy announcement. The European Central Bank's policy announcement is also due in a while. By the time your 60th birthday arrives, you may be at a point where you're not planning to work much longer. A lot of people retire during their 60s. In fact, Motley Fool research finds that the average retirement age in the U.S. is 65 for men and 63 for women. That's why it's important to have a good sense of whether you're on track for retirement savings-wise by 60. Here's the amount of money you may want to aim for by that age, with the caveat that this is not a hard and fast rule. What savings balance should you have by 60? Fidelity says that by age 60, you should have 8x your salary saved for retirement. So if you're earning $100,000 a year, an optimal nest egg would be $800,000 (or more). To put that into context, let's say you're planning to retire at 65. Even if you don't contribute more to an $800,000 nest egg, if it grows at a conservative 5% return for five more years, you're looking at a total balance of a little more than $1 million. Not only is that a nice amount of money, but it's also consistent with Fidelity's advice, which suggests having 10x your salary by 67 (which Fidelity is most likely assuming to be your retirement age in its guidance). There's wiggle room in that formula If you're 60 years old and don't have 8x your salary socked away in an IRA or 401(k), don't panic. Fidelity's guidance is meant to offer a framework for savers, but it's not gospel. And whether your savings balance is problematic or not depends on factors specific to you. It may be that you earn $100,000 a year at 60 and only have $600,000 saved. But it may also be that you only started earning $100,000 a couple of years ago, and you earned $80,000 a year for the decade prior. If we multiply $80,000 x 8, we get to $640,000, which would be your target, per Fidelity, based on the salary you earned for quite some time. So $600,000 doesn't seem so far off.
