1. Chongqing Mayor Hu Henghua is under investigation for severe disciplinary and legal violations, marking him as the highest-level official to be probed since China’s annual legislative sessions in March 2024. The investigation was announced by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the Communist Party’s main anti-corruption watchdog. Currently, Hu is subject to both disciplinary review and supervisory investigation.[para. 1][para. 2] 2. Hu made his last public appearance on March 16, 2024, at a municipal leadership meeting on talent development. He was reportedly taken away by authorities the following morning. At the recent national legislative sessions in Beijing, Hu maintained a prominent presence, engaging with the Chongqing delegation, speaking with reporters, granting interviews, and publishing a signed article on modern industrial systems.[para. 3][para. 4] 3. Born in June 1963 in Hengnan, Hunan province, Hu started his academic journey at Xi’an Metallurgical Architecture College (now Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology) in 1979 at the age of 16, majoring in industrial automation. Upon graduation in July 1983, he returned to the Hengyang Steel Tube Plant, where he worked 22 years, climbing from workshop technician to general manager and executive director. He joined the Communist Party in June 1985 and went on to receive an MBA from Hunan University.[para. 5][para. 6] 4. Hu’s leadership at Hengyang Steel Tube Plant was widely recognized: he received a national labor medal, was named a model worker in Hunan in 2003, and was listed among the province’s top economic figures in 2004. Under his guidance, the plant became a world-class steel and tube producer with an annual capacity of one million tons each. The enterprise garnered awards for 63 projects since 1999, achieving more than 20 million yuan ($2.8 million) in annual economic benefits through technological advances.[para. 7] 5. Facing capacity challenges in 2002, Hu initiated a “se...
