As you have got older, retirement has left you with more time on your hands. Loneliness has set in. Luckily, you have found a friend through one of the online motoring groups you are in, and a close bond has blossomed over your common interest in cars. But your new friend has found themselves short when it comes to paying for their university textbooks, and has asked you for £50. It’s not much, and you get on so well that you agree to pay via bank transfer. It will be the first of many requests for payment that the “friend” makes, all for seemingly small amounts, but which mount up as part of a structured “friendship fraud” that preys on older and vulnerable people who are in search of human contact. TSB is reporting a rise in scams where criminals are using social media to befriend people before defrauding them out of thousands of pounds, often over lengthy periods of time. The scam has many of the same characteristics as romance fraud, where victims are duped into thinking they have found a partner, and preys on older people who may have been bereaved or are isolated. In one case, a TSB customer lost £4,000 after befriending someone on Instagram who said they needed urgent help with medical bills. In another, someone in their late 60s spent four years talking to a scammer who said they were trying to flee an abusive family, and made 60 payments to them. After another pensioner made friends with someone on Facebook, they were told they had to send gift cards and money to the criminal or they would cut contact. The victim got refunded £3,000. Further away to the south, ragged patches of snow cling to the high gullies. The nearest village, Glenridding, can barely be seen behind the leafless trees and all I can hear is the gurgle of the stream. It is the quintessential Lakeland scene: the steep slopes above the water, the soft colours and hard rock, all combining into something inimitable. And judging by the photographic and artistic record, it is one that has hardly changed since the Cumbrian wind first ruffled a Romantic poet’s curls. Our best loved national parks – the Lake District, Peak District, Eryri (Snowdonia) and Dartmoor – all officially opened 75 years ago, in 1951. It was the result of a long campaign, arguably begun by one of those Romantics, William Wordsworth, a poet whose particular love for the Lakes led him to observe that the area should be “a sort of national property, in which every man has a right and an interest who has an eye to perceive and a heart to enjoy”. The resident of Dove Cottage at Grasmere fought, successfully, against railway building, noting the stupidity of destroying something precious in the pretence of increasing its influence. double quotation mark As a child, I instantly grasped the magic of swimming under waterfalls, scrambling along ridges and sitting on mountain tops That niggling dilemma has dogged the national parks ever since, but if Wordsworth were here now, I think he might approve, at least at first glance. The fate of some Alpine beauty spots has been avoided: no high-rise buildings break through the trees, no sports infrastructure litters the summits, and engineers...

Voting is under way in France in the second round of local elections – seenas a bellwether for next year’s presidential race – with cities including Paris and Marseille in the balance and both the radical left and far right hoping for gains. Most of France’s 35,000-odd communes elected their councils in the first round last Sunday, but in municipalities where the contest is tighter, including most large urban areas, the second round will be decisive, with electoral alliances playing a key role. Analysts say that while local elections are often decided at least partly on local issues, they can hold important lessons for national ballots. “They create momentum, provide a boost and establish a narrative,” said Frédéric Dabi of the polling institute Ifop. Besides indicating voter sentiment before the 2027 vote – which the far-right National Rally (RN) sees as its best chance yet of seizing power, with Emmanuel Macron due to step down – the local elections can suggest which tactical alliances may be struck nationally. One of the tightest races is in the French capital, where city hall has been held by the Socialist party (PS) since 2001 and the centre-left candidate Emmanuel Grégoire topped the first round with 38%, ahead of the conservative Rachida Dati on 25.5%. Three others qualified for the second round. However, a moderate rightwinger, Pierre-Yves Bournazel, has since merged his list with Dati’s, while the far right’s Sarah Knafo has withdrawn – potentially uniting the capital’s rightwing vote. On the left, Grégoire has refused to join forces with Sophia Chikirou of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s radical-left France Unbowed (LFI), which much of the mainstream left has refused to team up with over claims of extremism, antisemitism and violence. The centre-left candidate therefore faces a three-way race that, if he wins, will comfort the mainstream left’s reluctance to work with LFI – or if he loses, will be hailed by the right as proof of the potential of a broader rightwing a...

Hanoi has protested to Beijing over Chinese land-reclamation activities in the disputed Paracel Islands, following reports of accelerated dredging and landfill operations at Antelope Reef in the South China Sea. “Vietnam resolutely opposes such activities, makes representations and affirms its position on this matter,” Vietnamese foreign ministry spokeswoman Pham Thu Hang said on Saturday. She said Hanoi had “ample historical evidence and legal grounds” to assert sovereignty over the Paracel Islands , including Antelope Reef, in accordance with international law. Advertisement She added that any foreign activities in the waters without Vietnam’s permission were “completely illegal and invalid”. It was unclear when the protest was lodged, but last week Chinese and Vietnamese foreign, security and defence ministers agreed in Hanoi to “properly” address maritime disputes. Micron Technology (MU) stock fell 4.3% this week, even after the company reported strong earnings and raised guidance. The reaction reflects how much expectations had already moved higher going into the print. After a large run into earnings, the bar was elevated, so even strong results were not enough to push the stock higher. The company reported fiscal Q2 revenue of $23.86 billion and adjusted EPS of $12.20. Both came in well above expectations, and guidance also came in strong, with Q3 revenue expected to be around $33.5 billion. These results confirmed that demand tied to AI infrastructure continues to accelerate across the memory market. Micron Revenues and Operating Income (TIKR) That demand is being driven by data center buildouts and the increasing need for high-performance memory. DRAM and high-bandwidth memory remain the key products benefiting from this trend. As a result, Micron is seeing both stronger pricing and higher volumes, which is driving the sharp recovery in revenue and profitability. However, the market focused on a different part of the story this week. Micron plans to increase fiscal 2026 capital expenditures by about $5 billion to more than $25 billion. That shift signals aggressive capacity expansion, and investors are now weighing how that additional supply could impact the cycle over time. Palantir Technologies (PLTR) stock slipped about 3% this week, with shares trading near $151 despite continued strong momentum in AI-related announcements. The pullback comes even as the company continues to expand its footprint across both government and commercial AI markets. This suggests the move is more about short-term sentiment than any deterioration in fundamentals. During the week, Palantir was tied to several major developments, including reports that the Pentagon is moving toward adopting Palantir’s AI systems as part of its core military infrastructure. At the same time, the company announced new partnerships across industries, including an AI-powered mortgage platform and continued expansion in defense-related programs. These updates reinforce Palantir’s positioning as a key infrastructure layer for enterprise and government AI adoption. However, despite this strong news flow, the stock pulled back as investors digested valuation levels after a massive run over the past year. Palantir has been one of the best-performing AI stocks, and expectations have risen significantly alongside that performance. As a result, even positive developments may not immediately push the stock higher if they are already priced in. Additionally, insider selling activity during the week added to short-term pressure, as a company director sold shares worth over $2 million. While this does not necessarily reflect long-term concerns, it can weigh on sentiment in the near term. Combined with broader market weakness and interest rate concerns, this contributed to the stock’s decline during the week. See analysts’ growth forecasts and price targets for PLTR (It’s free) ...

Traditional computing is dead. Artificial intelligence is no longer just answering questions; it is actively performing complex tasks. During the March 2026 GTC Conference, NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang announced the arrival of this third major AI inflection point: Agentic Systems. These autonomous AI agents can write software, manage corporate files, and execute entire supply chain workflows. To completely dominate this new era, NVIDIA launched OpenClaw. This revolutionary software serves as the foundational operating system for personal AI agents. Developers instantly recognized its value, downloading it 1.5 million times in just a few weeks. Consequently, every major tech company is now scrambling to integrate OpenClaw into its own platforms. Furthermore, NVIDIA dramatically altered its hardware approach to support these power-hungry agents. The company integrated the recently acquired Groq processing team to pioneer “disaggregated inference.” Essentially, NVIDIA’s heavy-duty Vera Rubin GPUs handle the massive memory requirements of large language models. Meanwhile, the highly specialized Groq chips process the final token generation at lightning speed. This brilliant co-design delivers a staggering 35x boost in tokens-per-watt performance.“A computer of the future is a manufacturing equipment,” Huang explained to the crowd. “These computers are no different than ASML manufacturing equipment. They are producing something that is sold. The energy efficiency of it matters everything because it drives your revenues.” NVIDIA Corporation Stock Price Target (TIKR) See historical and forward estimates for NVIDIA Corporation stock (It’s free!) >>> Is NVIDIA Co...
