Grounding Planes 'A Distinct Possibility': Tightened Global Fuel Supply Hitting Asian Nations Hardest European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has again warned of a "critical energy situation" as oil and gas markets convulse, underscoring growing fears of supply shocks, at a moment President Trump early this week claimed the Strait of Hormuz could "reopen very soon" if talks with Iran succeed - though Tehran has flatly denied any negotiations are underway as confusion reigns over the status of backchannel dialogue. Already one country says it is suffering a fuel shortage crisis, amid broader reports of some demand destruction problems coming in from various parts of the globe. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos on Tuesday said there's a "distinct possibility" planes may be grounded due to a jet fuel shortage, connected to the war on Iran and de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz. "Several countries have already told our airlines they cannot fuel their aircraft, so they have to carry fuel there and back," he told Bloomberg News in an interview. via Anadolu Agency He additionally warned that long-haul flights could become "a much more serious problem" due to the fuel crisis and restrictions. He was specifically asked whether planes might inevitably be grounded, to which he responded: "We’re hoping not, but it’s a distinct possibility." Now in its fourth week, the US-Israel-Iran war had already disrupted commercial flights across the Gulf and Mideast region, especially impacting key regional hubs of Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, and Tel Aviv - due to the ongoing missile and drone danger in the skies. Another significant development reported by Bloomberg Tuesday : Vietnam Airlines will temporarily suspend flights on some domestic routes as jet fuel shortages and rising fuel prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East start to impact the nation’s air travel. The national flag carrier will cut around 23 flights per week from April 1 over tightened supplies ...

Prospective Vizio TV buyers should know there’s a good chance the set won’t work properly without a Walmart account. In an attempt to better serve advertisers, Walmart, which bought Vizio in December 2024, announced this week that select newly purchased Vizio TVs now require a Walmart account for setup and accessing smart TV features. Since 2024, Vizio TVs have required a Vizio account, which a Vizio OS website says is necessary for accessing “exclusive offers, subscription management, and tailored support.” Accounts are also central to Vizio’s business, which is largely driven by ads and tracking tied to its OS. A Walmart spokesperson confirmed to Ars Technica that Walmart accounts will be mandatory on “select new Vizio OS TVs” for owners to complete onboarding and to use smart TV features. JHVEPhoto/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Rio Tinto ( RIO ) said post-market Tuesday it reached a deal with the Queensland state government and the Australian federal government to keep open its Boyne aluminum smelter and ensure it remains internationally cost-competitive beyond its current power contract. Under the deal, the Queensland and Commonwealth governments agreed to invest a combined A$2B over 10 years to 2040, finalizing the terms of a previously announced partnership between Queensland and Rio Tinto ( RIO ), while supporting the Boyle smelter's transition to long-term competitive power supply beyond the completion of its current power contract in 2029. Rio ( RIO ) said the agreement builds on power purchase agreements it has signed in recent years to underwrite A$7.5B (~US$5.25B) in new renewable energy and storage in Queensland. Boyne has been in operation since 1982 and is Australia's second-largest aluminum smelter; t he company's operations in Gladstone account for more than 3,000 jobs, with 1,000 of those at the Boyne smelter. "As fossil fuels become increasingly expensive, this investment, combined with the power purchase agreements we have already signed, positions Boyne to be among the world's first aluminum smelters underpinned by solar and wind power," Rio's ( RIO ) head of aluminum and lithium Jerome Pecresse said.
