tadamichi McCormick & Company ( MKC ) traded higher in early Tuesday trading after topping expectations with its first-quarter earnings report. The acquisition of McCormick de Mexico boosted the company's results for the quarter. Revenue was up 16.7% year over year to $1.87B during the quarter. Organic sales rose 1.2% during the period. By region, the Americas saw the strongest consumer segment sales growth with a 30.4% increase, while the EMEA region recorded consumer sales growth of 15.5%. The sales increase in the consumer segment was driven by higher gross profit, partially offset by increased SG&A expenses, including investments in brand marketing and technology. The company's gross margin rate was up 20 basis points to 37.8% of sales. Operating income rose 1.0% to $227.5M on a margin rate of 12.1%. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.66 vs. $0.59 consensus and $0.60 a year ago. "First quarter total volumes were in line with our expectations, and we anticipate sequential improvement with growth building throughout the year, as we benefit from brand investments, increased innovation in both segments, and distribution gains," highlighted CEO Brendan Foley. "We delivered strong growth in sales, adjusted operating income, and adjusted earnings per share, supported by the McCormick de Mexico acquisition and organic growth across both Consumer and Flavor Solutions. Strong sales, acquisition accretion, and disciplined cost management enabled margin expansion as we continued to invest for future growth," he added. Looking ahead, McCormick & Company ( MKC ) sees FY26 revenue growth of +13% to +17% and EPS of $3.05 to $3.13 (midpoint $3.07) vs. $3.09 consensus. Gold ( XAUUSD:CUR ) is ticking higher. Spot gold is up about 1% to $4,567 per ounce but down 14% this month . Silver ( XAGUSD:CUR ) advanced 4.4% to $73 but slipped 23% so far this month. The 14% fall so far this month puts it on track for its steepest fall since October 2008, weighed down by a stronger dollar index ( DXY ) and fading expectations of a U.S. interest rate cut this year. Prices are, however, up about 5% for the quarter. Goldman Sachs retains its bullish view on gold despite the recent selloff, forecasting renewed gains by the end of 2026. Gold’s medium-term outlook remains intact, and the precious metal may reach $5,400 an ounce, analysts Lina Thomas and Daan Struyven said in a note, citing continued central bank purchases and two more US rate cuts this year, according to media reports. General Motors ( GM ) is halting operations at Factory ZERO until April 13, 2026. This extends downtime that initially started around March 16 . The automaker said the move is meant to align EV output with current market demand after a roughly 50% cut in production at Factory ZERO earlier in 2026. This underscores a broader slowdown in EV adoption in the U.S. GM has also taken significant financial hits tied to its EV strategy, including writedowns totaling about $7.6B. Netflix ( NFLX ) is reportedly looking to double its coverage of National Football League games. The streamer is seeking a four-game package that would add a game on the day before Thanksgiving as well as an international game. Under its current package with the NFL expiring at the end of 2026, Netflix ( NFLX ) has a three-year d...

Ethiopia’s central bank retained its benchmark interest rate at 15%, saying a tight monetary policy stance remains necessary to keep inflation below 10%. Policymakers have kept the rate unchanged since the introduction of the measure nearly two years ago as part of a broader set of macro-economic reforms under a International Monetary Fund-backed financing program. Inflation eased to below 10% in December for the first time in more than five years, having peaked at 37% in 2022. The war in the Middle East exerting pressure on oil prices and disrupting supply chains is “posing increased upside risks to the domestic inflation outlook,” the National Bank of Ethiopia said in a statement on Tuesday. “While noting that the extent of the pressure depends on the length of the turmoil and tackling mechanisms introduced by the government, the committee underscored maintaining the tight monetary policy stance.” Ethiopia has released some fuel reserves, re-introduced subsidies to cushion consumers and asked its citizens to use fuel sparingly. Police have reported an increase in cases of fuel theft from gas stations as vehicles queue for days to get tanks filled.
