Even if you don't know much about the inner workings of generative AI models, you probably know they need a lot of memory. Hence, it is currently almost impossible to buy a measly stick of RAM without getting fleeced . Google Research recently revealed TurboQuant , a compression algorithm that reduces the memory footprint of large language models (LLMs) while also boosting speed and maintaining accuracy. TurboQuant is aimed at reducing the size of the key-value cache, which Google likens to a "digital cheat sheet" that stores important information so it doesn't have to be recomputed. This cheat sheet is necessary because, as we say all the time, LLMs don't actually know anything; they can do a good impression of knowing things through the use of vectors, which map the semantic meaning of tokenized text. When two vectors are similar, that means they have conceptual similarity. High-dimensional vectors, which can have hundreds or thousands of embeddings, may describe complex information like the pixels in an image or a large data set. They also occupy a lot of memory and inflate the size of the key-value cache, bottlenecking performance. To make models smaller and more efficient, developers employ quantization techniques to run them at lower precision . The drawback is that the outputs get worse—the quality of token estimation goes down. With TurboQuant, Google's early results show an 8x performance increase and 6x reduction in memory usage in some tests without a loss of quality. Read full article Comments

Olemedia/E+ via Getty Images Albemarle ( ALB ) up 3.2% in Wednesday's trading after saying it launched the environmental review process in Chile for its first project using direct lithium extraction technology. The world's largest publicly traded lithium producer said the project is designed to recover nearly twice as much lithium while reducing the amount of brine extracted compared to current operations. The full project would consist of a DLE plant within Albemarle's ( ALB ) mining concession area, with up to six processing trains at the heart of Chile's salt flats, and the construction of a power transmission line, requiring a ~$3.1B total investment and a useful life extending through 2045, the company said in a filing to the Chilean environmental assessment agency. Net brine extraction would drop from 442 to 342 liters per second with one DLE train in operation, and as low as 142 liters per second with all six trains in use, the company said in the filing. Native communities around Chile's vast Atacama salt flat have raised concerns that mining could deplte scarce reserves of freshwater and lithium-rich brine, reducing its availability for people and wildlife. Nico De Pasquale Photography/DigitalVision via Getty Images The iShares 0-1 Year Treasury Bond ETF ( SHV ) is an exchange-traded index fund that seeks to track the performance of the ICE Short US Treasury Securities Index. The securities that are found in this fund are very short-term U.S. Treasury bills, notes, or bonds that have a maturity date that is less than one year into the future, and because they have a very near-term maturity, we can expect that they will generally be fairly stable assets to hold in most market conditions. After all, because U.S. Treasury bills mature very quickly, they do not typically move around very much in terms of price due to the simple fact that investors in them get their money back very quickly. This could make this fund an appealing alternative to cash, as it will frequently have a higher yield than a typical money market fund (and far higher than a bank account) and should not exhibit much in the way of price fluctuations. About The iShares 0-1 Year Treasury Bond ETF The website for the iShares 0-1 Year Treasury Bond ETF describes the fund thusly: The iShares 0-1 Year Treasury Bond ETF seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of U.S. Treasury bonds with remaining maturities [of] one year or less. There are three different types of fixed-rate U.S. Treasury securities, with the difference between them depending on the amount of time that passes between their issuance and their maturity dates. Here is a brief summary: U.S. Treasury Bills: These securities have a maturity date that is one year or less from the time that they were first issued on the market. These securities are generally considered to be cash equivalents, as their very short durations mean that their price does not fluctuate very much with interest rate movements (this is especially true for the shortest-term U.S. Treasury bills). U.S. Treasury Notes: A U.S. Treasury note is a fixed-rate debt security that is issued by the U.S. Treasury that has ...

Lance King | NCAA Photos | Getty Images As March Madness nears its peak, sports betting is gaining momentum as well — but new research shows the toll it takes on many households' financial stability. Sports fans will bet about $3.3 billion through legal means on this year's NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments alone, according to an estimate from the American Gaming Association — a 54% jump over the past three years. However, as more states have legalized mobile sports betting, leading to broader participation, consumer credit health has suffered, a new report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found. William_Potter/iStock via Getty Images Once upon a time, and in truth, as recently as four years ago, there was a strong relationship between the spot price of gold and the inflation-indexed market yield of 10-Year Constant Maturity U.S. Treasuries . It was an inverse relationship. When the inflation-adjusted interest rate on the 10-year bonds fell, signaling an increase in inflation, the price of gold would rise. And vice-versa. If the inflation-adjusted yields of these Treasuries rose, indicating falling inflation, the price of gold would fall as well. That made a sort of sense. But that relationship has broken down in the last four years. Starting from March 17, 2022, when the Federal Reserve finally acted to hike interest rates to combat high inflation, the relationship between the inflation-indexed 10-year Treasury and gold spot prices has steadily broken down. We can see that in the following chart , in which the price of gold has fully decoupled from the interest rate of the inflation-protected 10-year Treasury . Most of this decoupling has taken place since December 27, 2023. At that time, the yield of the inflation-indexed 10-year Treasury was 1.64% and the price of an ounce of gold was $2,079. Since that date, the 10-year inflation-protected Treasury has ranged between that low and a high of 2.28% on April 30, 2024. Today, that yield is just below the middle of that range at 1.88%. But the price of gold has soared during this time. In recent months, as the 10-year TIPS yield has ranged between, it soared to reach a high of $5,414.49 an ounce on January 28, 2026. In the weeks since, it has plummeted, losing over 10% of its peak value. All without any big change in the inflation-protected Treasury yield. It's like the carnival game "high striker". Gold prices are rising and falling by huge amounts independently of changes in yields and inflation. In mathematics, the slope of a vertical line is described as "undefined". Which is to say, there is no relationsh...
