photosvit/iStock via Getty Images Ares Capital ( ARCC ) is one of the first BDCs, which open the earnings season with its own financial performance filings. Given that ARCC is also the largest BDC in the publicly traded peer complex, its earnings serve as a decent barometer for understanding the overall temperature in the system. Just for the context. ARCC's market cap is around $13.4 billion, while the second largest peer - Blue Owl Capital Corporation ( OBDC ) - has "only" $5.6 billion. The BDC sector median market is ~$790 million. Furthermore, since ARCC has certain characteristics (see below), it makes it even greater source for understanding the direction of travel in the BDC market (especially for those, who are looking for bearish arguments): 24% of the portfolio is placed in SaaS. 14.8% of total income comes from PIK (above sector average of 8.5%). About 40% of the loan book is tied to non-first-lien investments, which, theoretically, should introduce above average risks. The portfolio is spread across lower middle market, core MM an upper MM segments, which means that via ARCC's earnings we're getting a good read of the entire BDC land. Now, today, going into the Q1 2026 earnings party, ARCC is trading at P/NAV of 0.91x, which is above the sector average of 0.79x. So, despite the optically weaker than average portfolio characteristics and a pre-communicated $0.01 per share drag to the NII generation, ARCC is still priced well-above the market. In other words, ARCC has a decent chip on its shoulder to not only send the necessary signal to the market that the fears around private credit have been exaggerated, but also prove that it is a premium player. Without further ado, let's dive into the freshly baked earnings deck. Earnings review All in all, ARCC's Q1 2026 earnings are rock-solid across the board and go directly against the bear case that private credit is about to blow up. The NII per share, which is the core metric to assess BDC cash generation and ...

A_Columbo/iStock Editorial via Getty Images GE Vernova: Turbines Are Taking The Market By Storm Power generation, turbines, energy. You name it, yeah? What’s common here is that the biggest name of them all, GE Vernova Inc. ( GEV ), has now become arguably the core holding for industrials investors ( XLI ) partaking in the AI infrastructure rush. First principles position energy infrastructure right at the bottom of the “AI is a five layer cake” analogy presented by Nvidia’s Jensen Huang ( NVDA ). Growth and tech investors were seemingly concerned about whether we could have enough AI compute, enough memory/storage, enough foundry capacity at TSMC, and recently, whether we have enough CPUs (benefiting Intel too!). GE Vernova: First Principles Bottlenecks Are Hard To Resolve Jensen Huang commentary on any bottlenecks (Dwarkesh Patel podcast) Yet, Jensen Huang again brought energy right back into the centerfold, informing us that while he believes that the above shortages that I highlighted were likely a “2-3 year problem,” the narrative completely flipped when he enunciated about the energy infrastructure. I don’t think Jensen could be any clearer here, right? What else would you want from the CEO of the world’s most valuable company reminding us that we “can’t build any of these things without energy, and those things take a long time.” Build what things? Data centers, obviously. However, we also know that GEV is indexed beyond data center growth, right? Manufacturing, reshoring, all contribute to the need for more and more power infrastructure. Although, data center electricity demand is well-established to be one of the most pivotal vectors in this unprecedented era for GEV and its peers. Who would have thought that the market is willing to accord >63x in forward earnings multiples to GEV currently? But, GEV is becoming one of the main bottlenecks to the AI revolution now taking place in front of our eyes. As we witness the shift to agentic AI boosting the need fo...

Chaos, Black Rain, Evacuations: Tuapse Oil Facility Struck For Third Time This Month Rosneft's sprawling oil refinery in southern port town of Tuapse has been struck by Ukrainian drones once again, unleashing a huge fire and significant destruction, in what marks the third such attack just this month . "Another serious incident has occurred in Tuapse. A large-scale fire broke out at an oil refinery due to an enemy drone attack," Krasnodar region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev wrote on Telegram, amid large-scale evacuations of the civilian population from the area . Tuapse disaster in wake of Ukrainian attack, via Wiki Commons Regional aviation hubs in nearby Krasnodar, Gelendzhik, and Sochi were closed as a result of the blaze which sent a large black smoke plume into the air stretching for at least 100km, regional reports indicate. "For the safety of residents living near the refinery, evacuations are underway. A temporary accommodation center has been set up at local School No. 6. I urge residents to follow all recommendations," the regional government statement continued. According to Ukrainian media : The Ukrainian monitoring Telegram channel CyberBoroshno reported that at least four tanks were burning at the refinery following the strike. “If in previous attacks the tank farm was hit, this time the refinery itself was directly targeted… There is a possibility that the fire could spread to neighboring tanks,” the report said. Reuters says that as a result of the several waves of attacks on Tuapse, operations at the plant have remained halted since April 16 - which was the first big strike of the month. One is left wondering, what about Russian defensive measures and why have these failed so spectacularly? First, it should be noted that small drones have become efficient and their size advantage is seen in evading conventional radar and anti-air missiles, by and large. TASS only has this to offer by way of official statement : "Intensive efforts are underway" to pr...
