In this extract from a new book on Sheffield’s musical history, Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and the cream of the city’s indie scene look back on the febrile mid-00s – from brilliant tunes to ‘brainless violence’ In 2005, enough of a storm seemed to be brewing in northern British indie music that NME tried to coin a new genre to encompass it all: New Yorkshire. “Forget LA, New York or London,” the feature read. “New Yorkshire is the best new band scene in Britain.” The magazine lumped together a bunch of disparate bands such as Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys, the Long Blondes, Milburn, Harrisons and Bromheads Jacket, along with a Leeds and Wakefield bunch comprised of Kaiser Chiefs, the Cribs, Black Wire, the Research, ¡Forward, Russia!, the Ivories and the Sunshine Underground. The New Yorkshire tag, though, had overlooked a fairly noticeable split in Sheffield at the time between the artier indie bands, often students, and the more traditional local indie outfits. Justin Paget/DigitalVision via Getty Images Thesis Tesla ( TSLA ) stock is always in the hot seat for investors abroad, touting a lofty valuation and perhaps loftier ambitions. I haven't covered this stock in quite some time, but today I'm going to break down why I still struggle to get behind Tesla's current valuation, even though I do believe the company's energy generation and storage segment, Terafab, and Optimus ventures could be a massive success story down the road. Let's dive in. 1Q26 Earnings Tesla reported mixed 1Q26 earnings, with a miss on revenue and vehicle deliveries, and a beat on net income, earnings, and margin expansion. The revenue miss falls in line with my expectations, as the company's automotive performance has been cooling down and pricing headwinds for their energy generation and storage segment are likely to be setting in. While automotive sales were up 20% YoY, the annual trend has been on a downward trajectory. I'd like to see longer-term improvement in automotive sales before getting excited about those figures. Energy generation and storage were cited to have fallen due to a decrease in Megapack and Powerwall deployments. Make of this what you will, but I believe this is a result of a cost-to-entry barrier that I mentioned previously. This doesn't change my take on the energy generation and storage segment long-term, as I believe the transition to alternative energy will bode well for Tesla looking forward. As expected, automotive regulatory credits were down 36% YoY, which I continue to believe will be problematic for Tesla. Bullish investors may combat this ideology with the fact that earnings beat and margins expanded; however, it is noted in Tesla's 10-Q that these figures came in higher than expected partly due to one-off warranty and tariff benefits. Tesla's services and other figures are likely the highlight of the report, up 42% YoY. As Tesla continues to sell more vehicles, FSD sales, supercharging, maintenance, and insurance ...

Sundry Photography Merck ( MRK ) is scheduled to report first-quarter earnings on April 30, during market hours, with analysts expecting a strong performance from Keytruda and Winrevair. The consensus EPS Estimate is -$1.47 , while revenue is expected to jump 2.3% to $15.85B. Over the last 3 months, EPS estimates have seen 3 upward revisions and 8 downward. Revenue estimates have seen 3 upward revisions and 4 downward. Seeking Alpha analyst ALLKA Research believes Merck’s defining moment will be sales of Keytruda Qlex, whose main role is to offset the launch of biosimilars to Keytruda from 2028. In Q4, Keytruda+Keytruda Qlex generated about $8.37 billion in revenue for it, up 6.8% year-on-year, the analyst noted. “One of the key catalysts I highlight for MRK is the potential FDA approval of Keytruda Qlex+Padcev on August 17 for the treatment of patients with MIBC who are cisplatin-eligible,” ALLKA Research said. However, it also highlighted a key risk from the U.S. launch of generic versions of Janumet in May , increasing competition in the type-2 diabetes and insomnia therapeutics market and Trump’s tariff threats, among others. Over the last 2 years, MRK has beaten EPS estimates 100% of the time and has beaten revenue estimates 88% of the time, leaving investors a little more optimistic ahead of the results. StockGood/iStock via Getty Images Investment Thesis POET Technologies ( POET ) has made a full cycle, from the high of Marvell ( MRVL ) driven hype, the shares have returned to their starting point, albeit with much more skepticism baked into the stock. That cycle is what I see as resetting expectations to make another speculative play feasible. I exited my position after a multibagger run to de-risk, not because I lost faith in the technology. Since my last coverage , the stock is still up ~35% and briefly delivered a ~3x move, peaking at $15.5 in a very short time. What’s different now is the setup. Expectations are low, sentiment is damaged and valuation is anchored partly by its ~$430 million cash position. If the company executes and lands a credible customer, the upside can re-open quickly. It still is a speculative buy with a potential bottom forming but one that now depends entirely on proof, not narrative. Data by YCharts Marvell Incident: A Credibility Break, Not Just a Revenue Loss POET lost the purchase order after publicly revealing its connection to Marvell, triggering a confidentiality breach that led Marvell to cancel the agreement. Management confirmed a connection to Marvell technology publicly in a retail-focused interview. This immediately kicked off a sharp run-up as the market interpreted it as Tier 1 confirmation. Yet within days, Marvell canceled the purchase order because of a breach of confidentiality agreement. The same information that sent the stock up by ~70% caused an almost 50% fall. Data by YCharts What makes the situation particularly ugly is the timing. POET knew of the termination of the contract but did not share it with the public and allowed the stock to keep rallying. Now, while this is obviously not good, that's a textbook setup that triggers investigations and lawsuits against management. POET was fortunate in a way that Marvell's response was relatively tame. Tier 1 semiconductor suppliers take confidentiality seriously. If...

The blue chip Dow ( DJI ) was -0.2%, the benchmark S&P 500 ( SP500 ) was -0.1%, and the tech focused Nasdaq Composite ( COMP:IND ) was -0.1%. From a sector-by-sector stance, six of the 11 S&P segments were in the red, with health care at the bottom of the list. At the other end of the spectrum energy was on top as oil ( CL1:COM ) pushed back above $100 per barrel. U.S. Treasury yields moved higher across the curve. The 10-year Treasury yield ( US10Y ) rose 4 basis points to 4.39%, while the 2-year Treasury yield ( US2Y ) ticked up 5 basis points to 3.89%. The 30-year Treasury yield ( US30Y ) added 3 basis points to 4.97%. The Federal Open Market Committee will decide on monetary policy, with rates expected to remain unchanged. The central bank decision is being made as Fed Chair Jerome Powell helms his last meeting, with Fed Chair nominee Kevin Warsh waiting in the wings. Elsewhere on the economic calendar, durable goods rebounded more than expected in March. Housing starts rose in March, while building permits fell. The U.S. international trade in goods deficit widened in March and the wholesale and retail inventories accelerated M/M in March. Big tech earnings data will continue to be in focus as Alphabet ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ), Meta ( META ), Microsoft ( MSFT ), and Amazon ( AMZN ) will release their results after the bell. “Stocks are again trading at record highs, reflecting strong investor confidence, but the S&P 500's heavy concentration in the Mag 7 technology leaders elevates downside risk should earnings fall short, as valuations leave little margin for error. For now, current levels are supported by solid forward growth expectations, but that justification could quickly erode if margin compression emerges, inflation weighs on growth, or earnings signal a broader slowdown,” Chris Brigati, chief investment officer of SW...

JasonDoiy Roblox ( RBLX ) is set to announce first-quarter earnings on Thursday, and investors will watch out for the company’s booking and advertising growth as well as its commentary on Wall Street expects the gaming company to post EPS of -$0.41, while revenue is expected to rise 44.6% to $1.75B for the quarter. Roblox’s CFO Naveen Chopra, during its Q4 earnings call, forecasted 2026 booking growth of 22% to 26%. He stated that advertising growth would be healthy but would remain a modest revenue contributor in 2026. For the current quarter, Roblox ( RBLX ) expects sales to be within a range of $1.69B to $1.74B, while full-year sales are expected to increase to $8.28B to $8.55B. Seeking Alpha analysts and Wall Street analysts are bullish, rating RBLX a Buy. Earlier this month, Wells Fargo maintained its Overweight rating but cut its price target by 20% to $78, saying that the company’s expansion into the ad business represents a large opportunity. While the longer-term outlook for the company is bullish, Wells Fargo’s Ken Gawrelski warned that growth metrics for Roblox ( RBLX ) are likely to become “meaningfully tougher” each month of the second quarter, translating into expectations for softer guidance for Q2. Gawrelski expects Q2 bookings guidance of $1.765B to $1.80B (representing 23% to 25% year-over-year growth) will be below the consensus estimates of $1.875B (30% growth). On the other hand, the gaming platform is navigating heightened scrutiny around child safety and facing over 140 lawsuits in the U.S. for allegedly exposing children to sexual predators, grooming, and violent content in its games. The company reached settlements with Alabama and West Virginia last week, totaling $23.2M, under which it will implement changes to its chat and gaming functions to ensure child safety. It also reached a $10M settlement with Nevada . Seeking Alpha analyst Weixu Wen rated RBLX as Strong Buy, saying that the platform’s scale and accessibility—operating on mobile d...
