RiverNorthPhotography Shares of J. Jill ( JILL ) are pinned down in early trading Tuesday as better-than-feared fourth-quarter results and an increase in the dividend were overshadowed by disappointing guidance for both the first quarter and full year as the company continues to face tariff-related headwinds. Although the company experienced another quarter of declining comparable and net sales and slipped into the red, the results were not as bad as anticipated, as a loss of $0.02 per share was better than expectations for a loss of as much as $0.12 per share. Net loss in Q4 included $3.1M in expenses related to the loss on debt refinancing. Total sales were down 3.1% to $138.4M but $3M above estimates. This reflected a 4.8% drop in comparable store sales. Direct-to-consumer sales, which represent 53.5% of net sales, were up 2.6%. Moreover, $4.5M in incremental tariff costs—net of vendor mitigation—compressed the company’s gross profit margin by 320 basis points to 63.1%. For the current quarter, J. Jill ( JILL ) expects net sales to decline by 5% to 7%, translating to a range of $142.87M and $145.9M, which falls short of the consensus estimate of $156.2M. Comparable sales are expected to be down 7% to 9% year-over-year, while gross margin is seen contracting another 400 basis points due to ~$5M of costs associated with tariffs. For the full year, net sales are expected to be flat to down 2%, suggesting a range between $584.6M and $596.5M, also less than the $610.8M estimates. Comparable sales are seen down by 1% to 3%, along with a 50-basis point margin compression to incorporate $15M of tariff costs. At the end of the fourth quarter, the company declared an increased quarterly dividend of $0.09 per share—up a penny from the prior dividend—to be paid on April 28 to shareholders of record as of April 14. This equates to an annualized dividend of $0.36 per share. Shares are expected to open with a new 52-week low. More on J. Jill J. Jill Non-GAAP EPS of -$0.02, reve...
