The US sanctions target people operating in broad sections of Cuban economy, including energy, defence and mining Cuba’s government has said new sanctions imposed on the island by Donald Trump amounted to “collective punishment”, as an enormous 1 May procession outside the American embassy in Havana vowed to “defend the homeland”. In an executive order on Friday, the US president said he would impose sanctions on people involved in broad sections of the Cuban economy, as he seeks to put more pressure on Havana after ousting Venezuela’s leader, Nicolás Maduro, earlier this year. With his broad smile, Tatsumi Hokuto helps an elderly woman in a Japanese care home almost effortlessly to her feet and makes sure she is steady. At first glance, Hokuto cuts an unlikely figure for a carer role: a powerfully built 27-year-old in tight leggings and a black singlet, with the physique of a dedicated bodybuilder. At first glance, Hokuto cuts an unlikely figure for a carer role: a powerfully built 27-year-old in tight leggings and a black singlet, with the physique of a dedicated bodybuilder. But for Nagoya-based Visionary, a company that operates nursing and care facilities across Japan, that contrast is precisely the point. Visionary’s “macho carers” like...
“You could do with some international exposure. China, maybe,” a law firm partner said as we stood over the water cooler. His offhand comment was so blasé. I wasn’t sure what unsettled me more – the comment or my reaction to it. Was it xenophobia or the inertia of assumption? He was perfectly pleasant, encouraging even, but beneath the civility was an implication I couldn’t ignore. I had never set...

I wasn’t sure what unsettled me more – the comment or my reaction to it. Was it xenophobia or the inertia of assumption? He was perfectly pleasant, encouraging even, but beneath the civility was an implication I couldn’t ignore. I had never set foot in Asia, yet suddenly, it felt as though my credibility required a pilgrimage. I wrestled with...

mustafaU/iStock via Getty Images Quality Stocks April was a great month for the stock market with the SPDR S&P 500 ETF ( SPY ) clocking in a solid double digit return of 10.51%. Dividend focused stocks also faired well on average, Schwab's US Dividend Equity ETF ( SCHD ) rose by 4.53%. When you consider individual securities the range of outcomes was very wide. Within the Top 25 stocks presented last month, performance ranged from -20% to +28%, one of the widest gaps I've seen in the last few years. The clear winners were SBA Communications ( SBAC ) +28.52% and Elevance Health ( ELV ) +28.58%, with Amphenol ( APH ) +16.56% and Lithia Motors ( LAD ) +16.18% also fairing quite well. On the flip side, we had Badger Meter ( BMI ) -20.64%, Nike ( NKE ) -16.02% and Intuit ( INTU ) -9.85% experiencing deep declines. While its nice to buy a stock right before it surges higher and it can feel deflating to buy a stock that continues to decline, these short-term shifts in price are just noise in a long-term investing strategy. They make you feel happy or sad, smart or dumb, but in reality there is no place for such emotions when it comes to making investing decisions. A glass half full mindset can give investors some perspective. When you have conviction in a company and you purchase shares with a long-term mindset. A rising price in the short-term is counterproductive because now you have to pay more to buy more. And a declining share price is almost welcome news since you can buy more with less capital. This of course assumes that fundamentally nothing changed for the underlying business, and you are buying with the intention to hold for years or decades. Short-term price swings are just noise and investors are better served focusing on long-term outcomes, making decisions based on signals. April is in the past now and what already happened cannot be changed. That is why we should focus on what the stock market is presenting us with right now. With that I would like to prese...

DOJ Probes 36 Illinois School Districts Over Sexual Orientation Content In Pre-K–12 Classes Authored by Naveen Anthrappully via The Epoch Times, The Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Rights Division has launched multiple investigations into 36 Illinois public school districts to assess whether sexual orientation and gender ideology content is being taught in pre-K-12 grade classes. If the districts are determined to be teaching sexual orientation and gender ideology-related content, “the investigations will examine whether the schools have notified parents of their right to opt their children out of such instruction,” the DOJ said in an April 30 statement. “The investigation will also assess whether the Illinois School Districts limit access to single-sex intimate spaces (such as bathrooms and locker rooms) and girls’ sports teams based on biological sex.” The probe will cover whether the districts violated Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which explicitly prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in education programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. The districts are “recipients of hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayer funding,” the DOJ said. The investigations will also look into whether the school districts adhere to the U.S. Supreme Court’s “extensive precedents on parental rights” as affirmed in Mirabelli v. Bonta and Mahmoud v. Taylor cases. In the Mirabelli v. Bonta case , the Supreme Court blocked a California policy on March 2 that prohibited school personnel from informing parents when their children requested changing their preferred gender identity at schools. “The State argues that its policies advance a compelling interest in student safety and privacy,” the court wrote in its decision. “But those policies cut out the primary protectors of children’s best interests: their parents.” In the Mahmoud v. Taylor lawsuit , the U.S. Supreme Court sided with Maryland parents, who, for religious reasons, wanted to ...
