DKosig/iStock via Getty Images Welcome to another installment of our BDC Market Weekly Review, where we discuss market activity in the Business Development Company [BDC] sector from both the bottom-up, highlighting individual news and events, as well as the top-down, providing an overview of the broader market. We also try to add some historical context as well as relevant themes that look to be driving the market or that investors ought to be mindful of. This update covers the period through the fourth week of April. Market Action BDCs were mostly down this week, underperforming the broader market sector. Month-to-date, the sector is up around 5%. BXSL underperformed on the back of its further Medallia markdown, which we discuss below. Systematic Income We are keeping an eye on BDCs with valuations that are dislocated from their historic relationship to the broader sector. One of the ways we track is via the 3Y Valuation Spread percentile metric (column T in the BDC Tool). A low number here means a given BDC is trading at an unusually low valuation differential relative to the sector (spread refers to the difference in the valuation between a given BDC and the sector average, and %le or percentile refers to where the valuation differential stands relative to its historic distribution). BDCs that stand out are BXSL, OTF and HTGC . Systematic Income BDC Tool The median sector valuation has risen off its recent low. Valuations are slightly understated (i.e., they are lower than they are in reality, on average) because we expect NAVs to fall in Q1, largely as a result of weakness in public credit spreads towards the end of the quarter. Systematic Income Market Themes The software sector rallied off the recent low and is nearly back to the level it was a year ago, though it’s still 16% off the year-end figure. Software company earnings have generally come in at healthy levels even if the market continues to pan the sector. IBM said that its software revenue increased 11...
