The yen jumped in Asia on Monday, as traders remained on edge over the potential for Japanese authorities to step back into the market after last week’s intervention to curb declines. The currency rose as much as 0.8% to 155.72 per dollar in thin holiday trading before retracing most of those gains. The move comes after Japan likely spent around ¥5.4 trillion ($34.5 billion) last week to support the yen — a warning shot to traders after it had weakened past 160 per dollar. It’s not clear whether this is another round of intervention given that “low levels of liquidity due to the Golden Week holiday will lead to exaggerated moves,” said David Forrester , senior strategist Credit Agricole CIB. “It will be worth paying attention to the 157 level in dollar-yen as the exchange rate has struggled twice just above that level post the reported intervention.” Japan Can Conduct 30 More Yen Interventions, Goldman Sachs Says Japan has the firepower to intervene 30 times in currency markets at last week’s scale, according to analysts at Goldman Sachs Group Inc., though officials are expected to conserve its reserves and step in at more effective moments.

The treasurer also says May federal budget will play ‘helpful not harmful role in fight against inflation’ Jim Chalmers has warned there will be little room for more cost of living support in his fifth and “most responsible” budget yet, as he ruled out an immediate extension of the 26-cent cut to the fuel excise and downplayed hopes for additional tax relief for workers. The treasurer also said Australian voters would forgive Labor for breaking a pre-election vow not to touch negative gearing rules for landlords, which is set to form part of a package that would also scale back the capital gains tax discount in the name of intergenerational fairness. New government accused of ‘performative justice’ and making deals with suspects in 2013 Tadamon massacres Ahmad al-Homsi is a deep sleeper, but when he was woken last month and told that Amjad Youssef, a Syrian intelligence officer who killed civilians in the 2013 Tadamon massacres, had been arrested, he bolted out of bed. He ran into the street to find other people already celebrating the news. “We stayed out for almost three or four days celebrating. People from neighbouring areas sent camels, sheep, livestock for us to slaughter and distribute them to people. The tears of joy didn’t stop,” said al-Homsi, a 33-year-old activist with the Tadamon Coordination Committee, which documented the atrocities in the Damascus neighbourhood. Continue reading...

That makes each sighting all the more precious The RSPB’s Cors Ddyga reserve is truly bioluxuriant. I am lucky to live nearby and explore it often, but one particular recent visit left us thrilled by its riches, and also posed the tricky question: was there a highlight among so many unforgettable wildlife encounters? One candidate must be our dusk arrival, by way of a deep-set old lane which drops with natural purpose to the broad marsh below. As we descended, moschatel gave way to meadowsweet.
