Tom Williams | CQ-Roll Call, Inc. | Getty Images Meta is back in a New Mexico courthouse on Monday as part of an ongoing child safety case that could determine whether the company is considered a public nuisance and must spend potentially billions of dollars to fix its products. The social media company lost the first round of the trial centering on claims brought by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez that it failed to safeguard children on its apps from sexual predators and misled the public about alleged harms from use of apps like Instagram and Facebook. A New Mexico jury ruled in March that Meta willfully violated the state's unfair practices act, and that the company must pay $375 million based on the number of offenses. The second phase of the proceedings, known as a juryless bench trial, will establish over a three-week period if Meta's actions created a public nuisance, thus warranting potential product changes. Meta said in a quarterly filing last week that New Mexico's AG's office is seeking "approximately $3.7 billion in abatement costs as well as injunctive relief, which includes requests for extensive changes to the manner in which we provide our services in New Mexico." For Meta and its peers, the trial is one of several this year that experts have characterized as social media's "Big Tobacco" moment. In the 1990s, tobacco companies were forced to pay billions of dollars for misleading the public about the safety and potential harms of their products, and subsequently saw their power and influence dwindle dramatically. "That was not an instant change, but if one compares the power held by big tobacco companies today, and compares it to the 1980s or even 90s, I mean there's no comparison," said Nikolas Guggenberger, an a...

As the Middle East conflict drags on into its third month and Chile’s central bank warns that uncertainty is hitting new highs, investors are split over the impact on the local fixed-income market. Of the 25 analysts and traders polled by Bloomberg last week, 44% see rates on two-year peso bonds edging up 5 to 10 basis points if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed all month. An equal share sees yields rising by more than ten basis points, with one respondent forecasting a jump of over 20 basis points. The longer the conflict lasts, the bigger the impact on global growth and inflation, especially in countries such as Chile that import nearly all their fuels. The government has already allowed prices at the pump to soar about 50%, the biggest increase since at least 1980. Investors must now judge how much longer the conflict will last, when the Straits will reopen and how much rising fuel costs will feed through to other areas of the economy. That is a lot to ask. “If the lock-down continues for the entire month, second-order impacts, which are not yet fully factored in, will begin to emerge,” said Ariel Nachari , a strategist at SURA Investments. “That is the biggest risk today and could alter inflation and interest rate expectations. That could primarily affect peso-denominated yields, by between 10 and 20 basis points.” Two-year peso bond yields rose 7 basis points last week, reaching 4.65%, near their highest level since the war began at the end of February. But the rate on one-year notes fell about 5 basis points in the same period and is now at its lowest since March 18. “It is very uncertain to venture predictions about levels with the current volatility,” said Jose Godoy , head of fixed income at Itau Chile’s asset management division. “Everything depends on how the geopolitical situation evolves.” Inflation Spike The move comes after consumer prices rose in March at the fastest monthly pace since early 2025, with the cost of living expected to accelerate furt...

It's Nicole Benjamin, your host here at Seeking Alpha to bring to you another episode of our series Portfolio Pulse, where, as the name suggests, we are going to be keeping a pulse to all the big financial moves happening in the market. Now, joining us today is Stephen Ayers. So, thank you so much, Stephen, for joining us. Stephen Ayers : Thanks for having me. NB : Absolutely. Now before we get started, Stephen, I want to ask you about your financial journey. What's your investment philosophy? How did you get on the Seeking Alpha platform? Tell us a little bit more about that. SA : Well, I joined about 10 years ago, back when Seeking Alpha had blogs, and I submitted a blog just to share publicly on a biotechnology company. And then I learned that you can submit articles as well, which was great. So, I've been interested in biopharma simultaneously. I became a nurse during this time and I also went to college to learn more about business. So, I've taken both of those routes in my journey. So, my primary focus is on biotechnology. NB : Well, speaking of, for today's episode, we're going to ...

jetcityimage/iStock Editorial via Getty Images How often, when you go shopping, do you specifically focus on name brands? Perhaps you've always bought Nike ( NKE ) or Under Armour ( UA )( UAA ) shoes and never expanded your horizons beyond that. When it comes to investing, especially in the banking or financial sectors, a lot of investors feel guilty of the habit of buying the big names that they recognize and never doing any further digging. However, the big names can often fail to provide an outperformance versus the market or their sector because they are always trading at some level of a premium to the overall value of their peers. They are a big name, and therefore they are heavily sought after simply because they are a big name, not because their overall performance may be stellar. Consider the year-to-date performance of big names like Bank of America ( BAC ) and JPMorgan Chase ( JPM ) versus smaller peers like Regions Financial ( RF ) and First National Bank Alaska ( FBAK ). Data by YCharts Here we can see that there is a clear outperformance from the smaller regional peers. Investigating lesser-known names and continually focusing on quality as well as value can provide a stronger return. Dividend investing isn't a set-and-forget methodology. It's a continual process of monitoring and improving your portfolio over decades, all while collecting dividends as a key part of your overall total return. Dividend Kings members enjoy access to tools that help them uncover great opportunities now, but also the ability to continually monitor and look for new opportunities. Today, I want to review the recent earnings from Regions Financial and provide an update on our coverage of them . Shopping Smaller Than Too Big To Fail Regions Financial Corporation is considered to be a larger regional bank within the United States. The reason that it's a regional bank is that it does not have branches or activity in all states. As of its last earnings, Regions was sitting a hair ...

Roberto Galan/iStock Editorial via Getty Images Finally, The Annual Meeting We Have Been Waiting For Berkshire Hathaway Inc. ( BRK.A )( BRK.B ) had its first annual meeting under new CEO Greg Abel. Warren Buffett got his due respect for his 60-year stewardship of Berkshire's capital and culture. Attendees were treated to a montage of old photos accompanied by Huey Lewis's “Back in Time.” Warren and Charlie had their “numbers” retired, with banners hung in the rafters of the CHI Center in Omaha. Finally, we got a rendition of what Greg called the “Berkshire Anthem,” the famous 1991 video of Warren testifying in Congress on the Salomon Brothers bond trading incident, reinforcing Berkshire's culture of integrity. Thereafter, the show was all Greg's, and he led off with what I have been asking for in my Berkshire articles for years. Before taking a single question, Greg gave an hour-long business update on his own, covering details about each of Berkshire's major segments. This was no sales pitch, but an honest assessment of the businesses, including the current challenges. Greg's thoroughness with this update anticipated many shareholder questions to the point where Becky Quick of CNBC later commented that she had to dig deep into her stack to find other questions for the Q&A section. Greg already had the reputation for deep operational knowledge, which was not the key focus at the top in the Buffett-Munger years. So, this was probably expected heading into the shareholder meeting. However, long-term shareholders may have come into the meeting with a few concerns still on their minds. After years of Berkshire Hathaway being synonymous with Warren Buffett, how deep a leadership bench is there as the company completes its 60-year transition from one individual's investment fund to an operating conglomerate? Is Berkshire incorporating technology into its businesses to catch up with peers where they are lagging? Will Greg really “keep the culture” of patient and discipline...

Leon Neal/Getty Images News "The final rewards text in the CLARITY Act is now public," said Coinbase Global's ( COIN ) chief policy officer, Faryar Shirzad, in an X post. Cryptocurrency-linked stocks were trading higher during pre-market trading on Monday post the news that a deal had been reached on a key provision in the crypto bill. Coinbase Global ( COIN ): +2.27% to $195.60; Circle Internet Group ( CRCL ): +4.81% to $104.50; Strategy ( MSTR ): +2.08% to $180.85; IREN ( IREN ): +2.28% to $46.70; MARA Holdings ( MARA ): +1.83% to $11.67; Riot Platforms ( RIOT ): +1.51% to $18.78. Bitcoin ( BTC-USD ) was 0.31% higher at ~$78.80K, Ethereum ( ETH-USD ) was up 0.61% to $2,336.81, and Dogecoin ( DOGE-USD ) was 2.13% higher at $0.11. The bill stalled after banks opposed a provision that would allow stablecoin issuers and crypto firms to offer yield-bearing products and other incentives that could draw deposits away from traditional banks, potentially making it harder for them to fund lending. In March, key senators and the White House are said to have reached a tentative agreement on the language to be included in the cryptocurrency legislation, which aims to resolve differences between banks and digital asset firms over stablecoin yield. What was included in the agreement was unclear and not guaranteed to win support from banking and crypto industries. On May 1, Punchbowl News reported that Senator Thomas Tillis and Angela Alsobrooks finalized a compromise to restrict stablecoin yield and rewards, with the Senate looking toward a crypto markup this month. Punchbowl News reportedly obtained the text of that agreement. "In the end, the banks were able to get more restrictions on rewards, but we protected what matters—the ability for Americans to earn rewards, based on real usage of crypto platforms and networks," said Shirzad in his social media post . "Now that this issue is behind us, it's time to focus on the broader bill," he said. "While this debate has been under...
