Investors holding $1.8 billion of bonds to finance Brightline West , a high-speed rail line between Southern California and Las Vegas, are asserting more control of the project after giving the railroad three more months to inject capital. Bondholders agreed to extend a deadline for the Fortress Investment Group -backed company to contribute equity to Aug. 1, according to a securities filing dated Friday. The railroad missed an end of March deadline to raise $400 million in capital to continue construction. Brightline West will be allowed access to $50 million from a restricted account to continue building the 218-mile line. In exchange, the train operator is granting holders of the 2025B bond series 69.7 million in new warrants, which along with existing warrants, give the bondholders the right to acquire up to 49.9% of the holding company’s equity. Bondholders also negotiated the right to attend meetings with the US Department of Transportation regarding Brightline West’s $6 billion application for a federal loan, which is critical to financing the project. An independent cash manager, RPA Advisors , was also appointed to approve project spending. The price tag of the build-out has far outstripped early cost estimates, swelling by some 35% to $21.5 billion. Brightline West has committed to raising some $5.5 billion in equity financing for the project and a $6 billion bank facility.

Yet over the next decade, smaller, cheaper, and more scalable quantum processing units (QPUs) could drive the development of more accurate quantum systems. From 2026 to 2034, Fortune Business Insights expects the quantum computing market to expand at a 30.6% CAGR. Therefore, it could still be a great time to invest in some of the early movers in this nascent industry. Its a prescription medicine used with a reduced calorie diet and .and physical activity. Michael Siluk | Universal Images Group | Getty Images When the Wegovy pill launched in January, telehealth provider LifeMD said its business doubled almost overnight. LifeMD went from seeing between 300 and 400 new patients a day to 600 to 1,000 new patients a day, said CEO Justin Schreiber. He knew there would be demand, but that level of interest surprised him. "There's no question that the launch of oral medications has improved access," Schreiber said. Tens of thousands of people have started taking Novo Nordisk's Wegovy pill in the four months since it launched in the U.S., the majority of them new to the GLP-1 category. Investors will get a fresh look at the Wegovy pill's momentum when Novo reports first-quarter results on Wednesday. The launch has already forced investors to rethink the o pportunity in oral GLP-1s – and which company might win it. While obesity and diabetes market leader Eli Lilly launched its own pill, Foundayo, last month, early signs indicate its rollout has been more modest than the Wegovy pill's start. "We were all in this camp of Foundayo, Foundayo, Foundayo because Lilly was talking it up and we were also concerned about making enough peptide because Novo was still coming out of shortage," said BMO Capital Markets analyst Evan David Seigerman. Now, Novo's early success has upended the expectations of some investors and analysts who expected the Danish company would fall behind its U.S. rival in the oral category, as it did in injectables. Novo's Wegovy pill uses the same main ingredient as its weekly shot. The company had at times struggled to produce enough of the peptide to satisfy the soaring demand for the injection, and the oral formulation required even more of it. Meanwhile, Lilly was telling investo...

Software stocks are the latest beneficiaries of rotation within the technology sector. The renewed momentum behind heavyweights like Oracle (ORCL) and Microsoft (MSFT) is notable and suggests that leadership is spreading out after being concentrated in semiconductor stocks. The software sector is a new source of positive technical catalysts in both absolute and relative terms, suggesting the iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) will build on its recent gains. After a severe six-month correction, IGV is long-term oversold per its monthly stochastics within the context of a secular bull trend, which is supported by the monthly cloud model. The stochastics have an upturn pending confirmation at the end of May, suggesting a long-term bottoming process is in place. Intermediate-term momentum has improved significantly for IGV per a new weekly MACD 'buy' signal, which supports upside follow-through in Q2. There is room to next major resistance at the weekly cloud model, near $97. IGV also has a positive intermediate-term catalyst relative to the S & P 500 Index (SPX). The ratio has dual counter-trend signals from the DeMARK Indicators® that suggest the trend of underperformance for IGV versus the SPX is overdone. IGV has already seen a positive reaction to these signals, which support at least a few more weeks of counter-trend outperformance. The daily chart of IGV is taking the shape of a bullish inverse head-and-shoulders reversal pattern. It is encouraging to see short-term momentum start to expand per the MACD histogram after Friday's gap higher off the 50-day moving average (MA) near $83, which is now short-term support. The improved momentum behind IGV and relative 'buy' signals versus the SPX suggest software stocks are asserting themselves as a new source of leadership within the technology sector. —Katie Stockton with Will Tamplin Access research from Fairlead Strategies for free here . OpenAI co-founder and President Greg Brockman said his stake in the startup is now worth nearly $30 billion, making him one of the larger individual shareholders in the ChatGPT maker. Brockman confirmed the amount during his first day of testimony on Monday in a high-profile legal battle between OpenAI and billionaire Elon Musk . Under questioning, Brockman confirmed his share of the company is valued at more than $20 billion and said “yes” when asked if it was worth “closer to $30 billion.” He also said he did not invest any of his own money in the startup. Musk, the world’s richest man, has accused Brockman and Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman of abandoning OpenAI’s nonprofit roots to capitalize on the project for their own benefit. Musk is seeking the removal of Altman and Brockman from their leadership roles, among other remedies. OpenAI has argued that Musk’s lawsuit is primarily an attempt to undermine a top competitor to his own AI company, xAI . The company has also contended that Musk himself was a proponent of restructuring OpenAI as a for-profit entity in its early years. Altman has repeatedly said he does not own equity in OpenAI. Asked by Musk’s attorney if his sizable stake breaches his duty to humanity, Brockman said no and stressed that the firm has “created the most well-resourced nonprofit in history. OpenAI said Monday that its nonprofit arm’s stake in the company is now worth about $200 billion. After OpenAI completed its for-profit restructure in October, the company said the nonprofit foundation had received a 26% equity stake, then valued at roughly $130 billion.

Deutsche Bank's Woke ESG Whistleblower Denied Millions By SEC For Tattling To Press In 2021, Deutsche Bank sustainability chief Desiree Fixler thought she was going to make millions after she blew the whistle with claims that the bank did not adhere to its goal of integrating ESG (environmental, social and governance) into all investment decisions . Fixler - who worked within the bank's DWS Group asset management arm - became a witness for the SEC , which fined the bank's asset-management arm $19 million in 2023. And had she actually gotten the SEC reward of 10% - 30%, it would have amounted to millions... Desiree Fixler, former sustainability chief at DWS, poses for virtuous whistleblower PR in 2021. She's looking off into the distance imagining how she'll spend the reward money. ...however, because Fixler (who was fired) ran to the Wall Street Journal before the SEC, they denied her a payout . The Wall Street Journal previously reported Fixler’s concerns about Deutsche Bank’s ESG business in an August 2021 article. DWS misled investors about how it integrated ESG criteria into its investing process, Fixler told the Journal. DWS told clients that every investment team used ESG factors to make decisions. But she found a case in which Wirecard AG, a German payments-service provider that went bankrupt in a fraud scandal, ended up in an actively managed ESG fund, which was supposed to promote companies with good governance. She filed a complaint with the SEC three days after The Journal’s article appeared. She later spent over 100 hours walking the commission’s staff through Deutsche Bank’s ESG program and how investment firms screen for ESG risks in public companies, she said in an interview. The SEC acknowledged in an order denying Fixler’s award request that it opened its investigation based on her statements to the Journal. But it didn’t consider her cooperation to be “voluntary” because she didn’t approach the SEC first . - WSJ "Where a claimant provides informati...

GameStop yesterday made an unsolicited offer to buy eBay for $55.5 billion. GameStop claims that eBay has underperformed and spends too much on sales and marketing and argues that it would become a stronger company if it cuts costs and is combined with GameStop's physical retail locations. "GameStop’s ~1,600 US locations give eBay a national network for authentication, intake, fulfillment, and live commerce," GameStop Chairman and CEO Ryan Cohen wrote in a letter to eBay Chairman Paul Pressler. eBay's market capitalization is over four times larger than GameStop's. GameStop faces skepticism about the viability of its offer but says it will obtain debt financing and pay with a mix of cash and stock. Read full article Comments
