Settlement details were not revealed in the agreement that put an end to a highly anticipated trial before it began Sign up for the Breaking News US newsletter email Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni have settled their legal dispute from the acrimonious production of their 2024 film It Ends With Us, just weeks before a highly anticipated scheduled trial. In a joint statement on Monday, legal representatives of both parties said: “The end product – the movie It Ends With Us – is a source of pride to all of us who worked to bring it to life. Raising awareness, and making a meaningful impact in the lives of domestic violence survivors – and all survivors – is a goal that we stand behind.” Continue reading...

Welcome back to Canada Daily, the newsletter on business, economics and politics from Vancouver to Montreal and beyond. If this was forwarded to you, sign up . A vote on Alberta independence is one step closer to reality. Separatists operating under the banner of Stay Free Alberta said they collected more than 301,000 signatures on a petition that seeks a referendum — easily clearing the bar that Premier Danielle Smith lowered. What does that number represent? It’s about 17% of the number of votes cast in the last provincial election. Under Alberta’s revised election law, they needed just 10%. But it’s far short of separatist organizer Jeffrey Rath’s stated goal of 1 million. Still, he was enthusiastic. “We’re elated. It was a fantastic campaign. We’re absolutely thrilled that we just completely crushed the statutory required number of signatures,” Rath said in an interview. “I’m feeling great.” The signatures still need to be verified, and Indigenous groups have launched a legal challenge of the separatists’ efforts. But assuming the vote goes ahead, then we’re into a campaign, and history tells us that campaigns matter. At the moment, separatism lacks broad appeal. A poll last month by Janet Brown Opinion Research found 27% said they would vote for independence, with enthusiasm higher among men and rural Albertans, while 67% said they would vote against it. The percentage who were unsure or refused to answer was 6%. Positive news on a new oil pipeline to the west coast — a longstanding wish for the province — might further strengthen the case for the remain-in-Canada side. So, too, might flexibility on the carbon tax , which is currently part of an agreement-in-principle between Alberta and the federal government. That agreement foresees a minimum carbon price of C$130 ($96) per metric ton of CO2 equivalent. But the two governments are still negotiating the details, so there’s room for change. Oil executives are seizing the moment to express what they want to see ...

High-Intensity Beams, Not Whispers: Study Suggests Aliens Would Send Strong Signals Authored by Rupendra Brahambhatt via Interesting Engineering , For more than half a century, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence has been built on the assumption that if aliens exist and try to communicate, their signals will be faint, scattered, and easy to miss. An alien doll. James Bat Barrera/Pexels So astronomers have spent decades scanning narrow slices of the radio spectrum, hoping to catch a weak signal buried in cosmic noise. However, a new study suggests something totally different-if an advanced civilization actually wanted to be noticed, it would not broadcast weak, unfocused emissions. It would do the opposite - concentrate its power into tightly aimed, high-intensity beams directed at specific targets. “Our principal assumption is that a purposely communicative technological civilization will do its technological best to establish communication with other extraterrestrial technological intelligences (ETIs),” Benjamin Zuckerman, study author and an astrophysicist from the University of California, Los Angeles, said . If this idea is even roughly right, then the silence in our data is not just a lack of evidence. It actually limits how many nearby civilizations could be sending signals we could detect. From faint radio traces to laser-like beams The traditional logic behind SETI comes from a simple constraint-interstellar communication is hard. If a civilization has limited power, the most efficient strategy is to broadcast in all directions. However, this makes any signal extremely weak by the time it reaches another star. This is why SETI searches have focused on extremely narrow frequency bands. “Radio search programs have employed very narrow (few Hz) bandwidths (BWs)-because, if an ETI has a given (limited) amount of power to transmit, then the way to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio at the receiving antenna is to use very narrow transmission and reception...

As its name implies, the venerable Notepad++ text editor began as a more capable version of the classic Windows Notepad, with features such as line numbering and syntax highlighting. It was created in 2003 by Don Ho, who continues to be its primary author and maintainer, and it has been a Windows-exclusive app throughout its existence (older Notepad++ versions support OSes as old as Windows 95; the current version officially supports everything going back to Windows 7). I'm not a devoted user of the app, but I was aware of its history, which is why I was surprised to see news of a "Notepad++ for Mac" port making the rounds last week , as though it were a port of the original available from the Notepad++ website. Apparently, this news surprised Ho as well, who claims that the Mac version and its author, Andrey Letov , are "using the Notepad++ trademark (the name) without permission." Westpac Banking Corp. ’s first-half profit missed expectations as Chief Executive Officer Anthony Miller flagged worries about the impact of the Middle East war on customers. Net income rose 3% to A$3.4 billion ($2.4 billion) in the six months through March 31 from a year earlier, according to a statement on Tuesday. That compared with the A$3.5 billion average estimate of analysts polled by Bloomberg. Australia’s biggest lenders are getting a boost from higher interest rates. Still, Miller has warned a deteriorating economic outlook stemming from the Middle East conflict could tip Australia into a recession and the Sydney-based bank has increased provisions. “The war in the Middle East is presenting challenges for some customers and the economic impact of the conflict will continue through the year,” Miller said in the statement. “The disruption to energy supply chains has driven a rise in prices and we’re seeing this flow through to businesses and households.” Rival National Australia Bank Ltd. on Monday missed first-half profit estimates as higher software costs and revenue challenges offset robust loan growth. ANZ Group Holdings Ltd. last week posted better than expected results. Westpac’s home loans grew at 1.2 times the broader market, the according to the statement. Deposits in its business and wealth division rose 5%, driven by growth in transactional and savings balances. The firm said it remains focused on growing transactional accounts, with the number of new accounts up 33%. “While our customers are resilient and stress levels have declined, we’ve taken a prudent approach and increased our provisions,” Miller said. Westpac’s economic outlook now reflects its base case provision scenario and a new portfolio overlay was added for energy intensive sectors. Credit impairment provisions increased to A$5.2 billion. Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman and Venus Williams co-chair annual New York event alongside Anna Wintour; Bezos sponsorship has sparked criticism Why the Bezos-backed Met Gala is so controversial Chloe Malle has been working at Vogue for 15 years, but tonight is her first as head of editorial content. Earlier this week she described her style as if “Katharine Hepburn was a librarian”. We’re sure the late actor would approve of this pretty egg-yolk dress with its delicate cap sleeves. And we have our first actual art reference – from Lauren Sánchez Bezos no less. Her dress – by Schiaparelli designer Daniel Roseberry – is a homage to Madame X, the John Singer Sargent painting of socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau from 1884. Causing a scandal at the time for its raunchy nature because the original had one of the straps slipping off, Roseberry and Sánchez Bezos missed a trick there. A real art snob version of the dress would include this detail. Continue reading...

Lumen ( LUMN ) is scheduled to announce Q1 earnings results on Tuesday, May 5th, after market close. The consensus EPS estimate is -$0.12 (+7.7% Y/Y), and the consensus revenue estimate is $2.85B (-10.4% Y/Y). Despite signing roughly $13B in Private Connectivity Fabric, or PCF, contracts, the deals have yet to materially lift reported revenue due to their long-term structure. Under these agreements, Lumen receives upfront payments while recognizing revenue over several years, leading to a buildup in deferred revenue, which has risen sharply to more than $7B. Most of this is classified as long-term, suggesting limited near-term contribution to the income statement. While this dynamic supports liquidity, it underscores a key investor concern: a mismatch between strong contract momentum and continued top-line erosion. "For at least another 2 years, we are unlikely to see a meaningful impact on Lumen's revenue growth resulting from the signed PCF deals," says Seeking Alpha analyst Dilantha De Silva Investor attention is expected to be on enterprise demand trends, cost controls, and capital spending as Lumen continues investing in network buildouts tied to these contracts. Over the last 2 years, LUMN has beaten EPS estimates 63% of the time and has beaten revenue estimates 63% of the time. Over the last 3 months, EPS estimates have seen 2 upward revisions and 2 downward. Revenue estimates have seen 2 upward revisions and 5 downward.
