The Thai cabinet’s cancellation of the 2001 agreement, which seeks to develop a framework to jointly explore hydrocarbons in parts of the Gulf of Thailand where the claims of Thailand and Cambodia overlap, had long been expected and follows two rounds of armed...

The prime minister said the attack in Golders Green is ‘part of a pattern of rising antisemitism’ in the country The next Scottish government will need to make “really difficult” spending decisions soon after taking power, including tackling its large public sector pay bill, senior economists have said. Severin Carrell has the story. Steve Reed , the environment secretary, has been giving interviews this morning. As well as promoting the (small) funding announcement for councils dealing with antisemitism (see 8.41am ), he has also been reviving the Labour attack on the Green party over their handling of antisemitism in their party (see 9.16am ). We need the Green party to do what the Labour Party did and kick out members of their party who are openly antisemitic. In my borough, where my constituency is, two Green Party candidates have been arrested for allegations of stirring up racial hatred. Instead of condemning them, the Green party has put out a letter saying that the Labour party is spreading cynical misinformation. Continue reading...

The continuation and development of human society depend on two main types of work: the production of material goods and the raising of children. Without a new generation to inherit our wealth and drive future innovation, even the most prosperous society will face irreversible decline.

Pakistan’s trade deficit widened more than expected last month as imports surged, adding strain to the fragile economy and thin foreign exchange reserves. Trade deficit rose to $4.07 billion in April, according to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data released Tuesday. That compares with a $2.99 billion deficit forecast by economists in a Bloomberg survey and a revised reading of $2.84 billion in March. A surge in imports widened the deficit, adding pressure on the South Asian economy as volatile global oil prices — amid the Middle East crisis — drive up costs for Pakistan, which relies heavily on imported energy. Inbound shipments rose 7.4% to $6.55 billion in April from a year earlier. A wider deficit will put pressure on the currency and weaken the nation’s forex stockpile. Last month, Pakistan secured $3 billion in financial support from Saudi Arabia, a move that helped shore its buffers and aided loan repayments. Pakistan reserves currently stand at $15.8 billion as of April 24.
