American Electric Power Co. is reviewing its memberships in two of the biggest US power networks after the utility’s top boss accused the grid operators of being too slow to connect data-center customers. “We have to solve the speed to market issue,” Chief Executive Officer Bill Fehrman said in a Tuesday earnings call. “This is an area that clearly has to get fixed.” AEP is in the early stages of evaluating membership in PJM Interconnection LLC , the largest regional grid in the US, as well as Southwest Power Pool Inc. , Fehrman said. The move comes as the Ohio-based utility giant seeks to meet booming demand from power-hungry data centers. PJM and SPP operate regional power grids. PJM serves more than 67 million people in 13 eastern states, extending from Illinois to North Carolina, while SPP serves about 20 million people in central US, from North Dakota to part of Texas. Frustrations over PJM have been growing because wholesale electricity costs are climbing while reforms are moving too slowly to both bring on new supplies and serve increasing demand by artificial intelligence. Problems that have been festering for years for connecting and procuring supplies have now become urgent because data centers are expected to expand electricity consumption at a record clip following two decades with little growth. “AEP is expressing frustration with the time to connect new generation in PJM,” said Paul Patterson , a utility analyst for Glenrock Associates. “It sounds like their patience has been tried by the perception that PJM and others are not moving as fast enough as utilities would like.” Fehrman didn’t disclose a timeline for the review, but said the current state of PJM’s performance and stakeholder approval process doesn’t give him great confidence that the issues will be resolved any time soon. “In fact, if something is not done now, I expect we could still be having these same conversations in 10 years,” he said on the call. AEP’s comments come eight months afte...

matejmo/iStock via Getty Images Investment Thesis Gold prices declined significantly from the all-time high of over $5,550/ounce reached at the end of January. GLD ( GLD ) shares declined accordingly and have struggled to regain upward traction since. GLD share price (orange) versus price of oil (green) (Seeking Alpha) The main reason why the share price of GLD failed to find its footing is that an inverse correlation between the price of gold and the price of oil has developed since the start of the Iran war, mostly related to rising expectations of higher interest rates, which tend to be bearish for gold. My take on gold prices going forward is that, regardless of whether this correlation remains for a while longer or breaks, gold prices are going up. If the Iran crisis ends very soon and energy flows resume promptly and oil prices decline, gold prices will resume their upward momentum while preserving the current inverse price correlation between the two commodities for a while longer. The more dramatic outcome would be for the crisis to continue for a prolonged period, in which case I see a repeat scenario of the gold price rally we saw between 2023 and the start of 2026, in the aftermath of the COVID crisis and its impact on inflation, fiscal health, and other economic metrics. If this is the case, we could potentially see gold prices hit $12,000/ounce and GLD shares surpassing $1,200, which is why I see the GLD ETF as a buy. Maintaining a Buy Rating I last covered the GLD ETF in mid-March, where I focused on describing the inverse correlation between the price of gold and oil. A month and a half later, we can confirm that the inverse correlation is still in place. I had GLD as a buy then at around $400/share. One of the key assumptions I made was that if the Strait of Hormuz remains blocked for over 12 weeks, the current correlation will dissipate, as we will enter a more severe demand destruction scenario past that threshold. I have now changed my mind, and I...

Wolterk Amplify Investment disclosed that it held a passive stake in Bed Bath & Beyond ( BBBY ) of 8.7%. The filing was on behalf of Amplify Investments LLC, Amplify ETF Trust, and Amplify Blockchain Technology ETF. The position of 6,039,111 shares is 4.2% higher than the last share ownership disclosure from Amplify. An ownership level above 5% is notable because it triggers SEC beneficial ownership disclosure, which makes the position visible to the market. That visibility could come into play for a turnaround-style stock like Bed Bath & Beyond ( BBBY ) because it shows a large fund is willing to own a sizeable piece of the company. Shares of Bed Bath & Beyond ( BBBY ) still trade at the lower end of their 52-week range of $3.74 to $12.65. Analysts have pointed to signs of a turnaround at the retailer after the strategy reset under CEO Marcus Lemonis but have warned that it is still “early innings” and positive adjusted EBITDA is still a work in progress. Short interest on BBBY stands at 12.3% of the total float. LONG BEACH, Calif.—2026 is a strange time for electric vehicles in the US. The current administration has no desire to push for their adoption and has rescinded the federal tax credit on which EV sales have depended for years. Tariffs have made vehicles and their constituent components even more expensive , making switching to an EV for the first time an even harder pill to swallow. Manufacturers like Honda, which had three nearly production-ready EVs on deck, just killed them all unceremoniously . It’s bleak out there. Still, Ford has decided to stay in the game with its “Universal Electric Vehicle,” which it announced in late 2025. This highly modular platform is designed to underpin all of the Blue Oval’s electric vehicles going forward. The work has been largely conducted at Ford’s Electric Vehicle Development Center (EVDC) in sunny Long Beach, California, and Ars Technica was recently invited to tour the facility to see what makes it different from any of Ford’s other operations.
