When Adobe (NASDAQ: ADBE) announced last month that its board had authorized a new $25 billion share repurchase program, the market mostly shrugged. Shares closed near $247 on the day of the announcement and ended the week slightly lower. For a buyback that big -- and from a company with a market value of close to $100 billion -- the muted reaction was notable. But the tepid response says more about sentiment toward Adobe right now than it does about the buyback itself. The creative software company's shares are down about 27% year to date and roughly 33% over the past 12 months, weighed down by persistent fears that generative artificial intelligence (AI) will eventually erode its pricing power in creative and marketing software. Charlotte received the green light on Tuesday to issue $215 million in revenue bonds that will finance a new runway at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. The planned 10,000 foot runway will be the airport’s fourth, and is part of the facility’s roughly $4 billion capital plan to expand capacity and modernize. Charlotte’s growth has bolstered the airport’s origin and destination traffic volumes, with about a third of its passengers beginning their trip in the city. It is also the seventh busiest airport in the world based on aircraft operations, according to preliminary rankings from Airports Council International. The North Carolina Local Government Commission, led by Treasurer Bradford Briner, unanimously approved the borrowing in a meeting Tuesday. The panel also approved $175 million in revenue bond anticipation notes for rehabilitating a roughly 30-year old runway. Charlotte has already taken on some $1.5 billion in debt for a variety of projects, which include water services and stadium financing , according to North Carolina Auditor Dave Boliek. Ahead of the vote, Boliek pressed the city’s chief financial officer, Matt Hastedt, on “the strategic financial plan for keeping track of these dollars.” “That’s a tremendous amount of borrowing and at some point the city of Charlotte’s going to reach its credit card limit,” Boliek said. Hastedt answered that Charlotte’s growth requires a “fair amount of investment.” Fitch Ratings revised the airport’s outlook to positive from stable last week, citing its position as a top hub airport, low cost per enplanement and broader airline industry trends demonstrating the sector’s resilience across economic cycles.
